1910 Census Cities & Street Name Changes Projects

Hello,

In 2001, I started compiling databases to help people search the United States census. Specifically, I wanted to help in the search of the 1930 census. ITWIT stands for Is-iT-Worth-IT?.... a little self depreciating humor, as the first attempts at database compilations were crude and incomplete. It's not only laws and sausages that shouldn't be observed during their making!!

Soon a number of people helped me, including Steve Morse who provided search engines and a home for the growing databases. See: http://www.stevemorse.org/ and look at the Census folder. Over 40 volunteers eventually joined the 1930 project, and we produced street name databases for all cities of over 25,000 on the Census. We then added additional utilities, including a 1930 to 1920 ED conversion database, and a 1910 street name index. A few weeks ago another utility, a list of existing street name changes and tables of street name changes of our target cities was started. In a few years, I anticipate we will produce a 1930 to 1940 ED converstion table for our target cities.

I'm always looking for people to help with the various projects. I want to expand our offerings for the 1910 databases. I want to expand our street name change databases.

For the street name changes, if you have access to resources such as city directories, or street guides, or library lists, to a city we don't have up (or wish to augment one of our existing cities), and such resources show name changes, I encourage you to contact this board to see how you can do the transcription. I may not get back to you immediately, so be patient.

If you want to help with the 1910 cities, which involve much more work, I would encourage that as well and will discuss what is involved.

I posted a while ago the request for volunteers here. We continue to have projects that need help.

So thanks for considering helping.... here's what I have on my plate right now.

1. 1900 Cities. We are tackling the top100 cities in the US for 1900 and hope to be able to open a geographical search utility on the One Step site. With this project, I will give you boundary descriptions of the EDs of a city, and hopefully a map showing the ED boundaries in 1900...but perhaps the map will not be able to show the street name clearly. Using a circa 1900 map, or searching the online images of the city on Ancestry for 1900, or a combination of both, you fill in the internal streets of each ED.

2. 1940 to 1930 ED proofing. I've transcribed off of the National Archives film series T1224 150,000 1940 to 1930 ED conversions. A volunteer or two with access to a NARA with these film rolls needs to proof the files.

3. Augmented our 1930 to 1920 ED conversion tables. Volunteers with access to a NARA branch, or a library or Family History Center with 1930 films of NARA T1224 (ED descriptions) can help here. I'll provide a template for the transcriptions. Another possibility here is to help with entering from a data sheet the ED conversion numbers into a text file.

4. Help revise city files for 1940 and 1930 from a table of added information. In this case, you would get a table of street names and ED numbers, and add those numbers to an existing street/ED file.

If any of these look interesting, let me know.
