Hi. We are a group of volunteers from Goole Museum in the East Riding of Yorkshire. We are hoping to set up a forum for volunteers who work in museums, archives or historic buildings anywhere in the world, on which to discuss volunteering experiences and stories, to promote forthcoming exhibitions and events, to share ideas and tips and just to generally chat about anything "history"!!! If you would like to join us, come along to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Goole-Museum-Volunteers/232066... - we look forward to hearing from you!!

Survey: Users of large-scale digitised collections

This is a request for participants to complete a survey into how large-scale digitised collections (LSDIs) are being used:

https://opinio.ucl.ac.uk/s?s=15519

This survey is part of a PhD research project being undertaken at University College London which aims to learn more about the experience of users of LSDIs, and in particular digitised newspaper collections. For the purposes of this project, LSDIs are considered to be large collections of digitised print and other media that can be viewed using a computer; the most famous example is Google Book Search, and other projects include the British Library's digital collections. This project is looking in particular at the British Library's 19th Century Newspaper Collection. If you are a user of this resource, then your opinions will be extremely valuable in helping us to discover how people are using the British Library's collections of digitised newspapers, but we are also eager to hear opinions from users of other large-scale digital collections, whether they contain newspapers or other media.

I know genealogists have been one group that has made extensive use of digitised resources in their work, and therefore I'm very eager to hear your opinions. If you use LSDIs in your genealogical research or for any other purpose, whether work, research or personal interest, then please fill in the survey and share with anybody that you think may be interested in contributing.

The survey can be found at the following link, along with further information. The closing date is Friday 14th September. Participation is, of course, entirely voluntary and anonymous:
https://opinio.ucl.ac.uk/s?s=15519

Many thanks for your time,
Paul
------------------------
Paul Gooding
PhD Student
UCL Centre for Digital Humanities
Department of Information Studies
University College London

Web Survey: Are UK Family Historians Using the Right Resources?

http://edu.surveygizmo.com/s3/973257/Online-Genealogy

For my Master’s thesis, I am researching family history websites. This survey makes up a crucial part of the study and consists of simple questions about what websites you use and your experience with them.

The results of the survey will be combined with a comparison of the major sites features - and search results - in an attempt to define trends and determine what motivates family historians to select the online resources they use.

Although the survey has a focus on UK family history content, it is open to anyone who researches families in the UK regardless of their location in the world.

The survey is estimated to take a maximum of 9 minutes. Your responses are anonymous and will be very helpful to my study and may provide some insight into other research options.

Results will be shared here on completion of the study.
Greg Scowen – Northumbria MA/MSc Information and Library Management by Distance Learning

Unclaimed Veterans - Families For Forgotten Heroes

Looking for volunteers to help research for the Next of Kin of Unclaimed Veterans. http://www.familiesforforgottenheroes.org/

On the left: Click Here For FFFH Forums. Sign up for a free membership. Once you are a member go to the forums. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. In the "Latest Forum Statistics" Section, you will see the words "Genealogy Team" in purple, click on that.
It will take you to a page to request to join the Genealogy Team.

What is an Unclaimed Veteran (UH – Unclaimed Hero)?

The Veterans in our database come from several sources.

1) The UH cases that are referred to us by coroners, medical examiners, and law enforcement offices have usually passed away with no known NOK (Next of Kin). You will find most of the veterans in these cases have died in the past year. Our mission in these cases is to identify who the living NOK is and what their current contact information is. We seek name, relationship, address, phone numbers, e-mail, and sometimes other forms of contact such as social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and My Space. We summarize this information and give it to the agency who presented us with the case so family can be notified of the passing of their Veteran.

2) The UH cases that are referred to us by MIAP (Missing In America Project), PGR (Patriot Guard Riders), other similar veterans organizations or funeral homes may or may not have known NOK. Many of these cases are cremains that have been stored on a shelf for years and never received a proper military burial. Several of these groups are now researching unclaimed cremains at funeral homes to verify if the cremains are veterans and if they are, giving them a proper military burial in one of our National Cemeteries. Sometimes the family knew of the passing of their veteran and did not have the means to bury them. Sometimes, the family does not know that their veteran has died. They are all classified an Unclaimed Veteran because they were never buried. Our mission in these cases is the same as in #1. Families need to be found so they can be notified of the burial of their Veteran, regardless of whether or not they knew of their Veterans death.
----------------
Help us honor the Veterans of the USA. They are gone but not forgotten, and it's time their families were given the opportunity to know what happened to their Vet.

genealogy PhD dissertation -- research invitation

My name is Jennifer Land, and I am both a genealogist and a PhD candidate. I am bringing those two together in a dissertation called “From Gravestones to Google: Information-Seeking Behavior and Satisfaction in the Evolving Field of Family History Research.” I’m surveying my fellow genealogists to find out how access to resources on the Internet impacts the way we conduct family history research.

I’ve created a web survey that will take about 10-15 minutes. This survey contains questions about your experience conducting genealogical research, the types of research tools you use, and your experience working with other genealogists. If you are willing to share some information with me, please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/jland.

Jennifer

___________________________________________
Jennifer Mathews Land, MLIS
PhD candidate, The University of Alabama
College of Communication and Information Sciences
jland.dissertation@gmail.com

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/jland
Taking names off of old maps – I’m looking for help

I’m asking for assistance.
I have a large map collection and have been scanning and posting the maps on my website.
There is no charge to use the maps. You don’t need to register, they are just out there for all to use. The site has been up for about 6 years now.

But now I’m trying to make the maps even more useful. Some of them are very detailed with people’s names, placenames, cemeteries, etc. I’m embarking on a project take every name and site off the maps and enter them into a database which can be searched. Again – all for research purposes with unbound access. The search function will show the exact location of the person’s name, or place, etc on the old map.

I’ve tried using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software but it only gets about 5% of the names. A human needs to read and type each name into the database.

I’ve written a program which makes it easier to read and enter the names, but it is too much work for one person to enter them.
Plus I’m still spending time scanning and uploading more old maps.

If anyone can help, I’d appreciate it. I’ve included a sample link to the program which would be used to enter the data below.

I’d guess it takes about an hour to do one map, and I have at least 500 maps with great detailed information.

Here’s how the program would work. Try it if you like – the data is for testing only:

http://menotomymaps.com/enter_names_on_map.asp

Vin – MenotomyMaps.com

Request for Assistance with Family History Thesis

Hi,

I'm currently studying for an MA in Cultural History at the university of Teesside, and am in the process of writing my thesis.

The focus of my thesis is on the methods and purposes of popular Family History in the North East.

To this end I am looking for local people who have studied their family history. I intend to conduct a number of face-to-face interviews with family history enthusiasts and I also hope to issue questionnaires on the same subject.

I am hoping that I might be able to find people on Ancestry.co.uk who would be interested in taking part - either by sitting for an interview or by completing a questionnaire.

Both interview and questionnaire would be quite in-depth, featuring many different questions, and would take a while to complete.
Questions would cover the basics of the subject's family history, the stories that have been passed down in their family, the results of their research, etc.

If anybody reading this is interested, please get in touch directly on benfrew@gmail.com

Please be aware that I would require participants to be quite candid, and contents of the completed interviews/questionnaires may be included in the final theses, so if there is any sensitive information that you would rather not be discussed then it would be best not to volunteer.

Thanks very much for reading, feel free to also contact me if you haev any further questions.

-Ben
UK Online Genealogy Resources Questionnaire

I'm a mum of two, working and studying part-time for an MSc in Library and Information Studies at City University, London. I have been amazed at the quantity of genealogical resources that have become available on the Internet and decided it would be an interesting topic to research for my dissertation.

I am looking for willing volunteers to take a 5-minute online questionnaire about UK online genealogical resources and their use. This questionnaire is mainly multiple choice and anonymous. There is an option at the end to provide an email address to receive survey results or participate further.

If you're interested in helping the link is here:
http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/299979/UK-Online-Genealogy-Res...

Hoping to continue my personal family history research once my dissertation is finished and I have time again!

Thank you to Nathaniel for authorising this post

Best wishes,
Sam
I just became a FS indexer in March and love it! I've gotten to index census records, marriage registers, WWII draft cards and have contributed almost 2500 names to the database so far. Not only is it giving me an opportunity to contribute something to the genealogy community, it's strengthening my skills at reading the old handwriting. Give it try... the more people indexing, faster the records indexes will be available for all to use.

(oh, and you can select documents from areas you have ancestors in... which for me is just about every state.)

Family Search Labs Indexing

Have you ever heard any of these statements:
· I don’t have time to do family history.
· My grandmother did all of my family history.
· I work at the family history center, but I run out of things to do when there are no patrons.
· I’ll wait and do my family history when there are more original records available on the Internet.
· I don’t know how to get started with my family history. What’s a census?

The response to all of these statements could be—“Sign up for FamilySearch indexing!”

FamilySearch indexing allows an army of volunteer indexers from around the world to help preserve and make the records of our ancestors available online for research. Using our online system, these volunteers are easily able to extract data from valuable records and provide free searchable indexes—all from the convenience of their homes.

Anyone can help at any time. Volunteers do not need to be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They simply need to register, sign in, and follow a simple process:

1. Select “batches” of records to download to their computers.

2. Enter the requested information (names, dates, events, etc.) in the corresponding spaces.

3. Submit the completed batches to the online system.

Here are some of the benefits of being a volunteer indexer:

· You don’t have to be an expert genealogist. New indexers and genealogists can become familiar with the types of information available on a census record or other vital documents by doing indexing.

· There are no fixed time commitments. Volunteers can index any time and for any amount of time that they want. Some indexers volunteer an hour a day; others volunteer five minutes a week. All are welcome and appreciated.

· Help FamilySearch publish more records online. The more volunteers that help index, the faster records will be made available online to researchers.

· If you’ve hit a roadblock or you feel that all your family history is complete, become part of the indexing community. Help make records available for others to do their family history.

Currently over 70 different collections of records from 28 different countries and 10 languages are being indexed. The FamilySearch indexing Web site and computer program are available in the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

To sign up for FamilySearch indexing or to learn more about the program, go to http://indexing.familysearch.org.

Go there also to see what projects have been completed. I'm sure you will be amazed and helped by these projects. And if you sign up to volunteer, you will enjoy the efforts you are making to see that these records become publically available.

Karen

Adoption and American Indian Identity project

Seeking participants for an adoption-related project. The only requirement is to be born of a federally-recognized tribe, although the focus is on the Cherokee Nation.

This project is a modern day study of personal histories of the effects of adoption and subsequent assimilation on American Indian identity and the legal use of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 in ascertaining origins and attaining tribal eligibility. The intent of the study is the exposure of the personal experiences of adopted persons who have suffered a loss of their American Indian identity due to adoption and their experiences in challenging the federal legal system for tribal eligibility using the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. In the past, the assimilation of the American Indian was a priority in the civilization policies of the United States of America; however, this mindset continues to infiltrate modern society, affecting closed record adoption policies by withholding tribal citizenship from eligible individuals based on their circumstance of birth.

There is a release form involved, and a written interview questionnaire, although an oral interview is possible, if preferred. Privacy of name, if desired, is guaranteed.

The purpose is a compilation of histories for publication and, quite likely, a future dissertation.

If anyone is interested, please contact me at historymutt@gmail.com using Subject Line: Study, with a brief summary of your interest in participation, and I will provide you with either the questionnaire or set up a time for a phone interview, or face-to-face if logistics make that a possibility.

Please share this with any individuals you feel may be interested in participating.

Tammy Figueroa
historymutt@gmail.com

University Dissertation Project - Family History in Museums

My name is Amy and I’m an MA student at the University of Leicester in England. I am working on a project for my dissertation to do with the museum’s role in assisting in family history research in the UK.

I am very interested, as part of my research, to collect thoughts from the public who do family history research. I would especially like to hear from anyone who has used a UK museum in the past or is currently looking at museums to further their research into their wider family history context. I am hoping the research and direct contact with museums during my dissertation might facilitate easier access for the public in the future.

Your responses would be anonymous. If you are able to assist my research or would like further information on the project could you please email me at akh11@le.ac.uk.
Margie,
Basically all that needs to be done is that each attestation paper is checked for the recruits birthplace. All you have to do is enter the "regimental number" for a given unit's regimental number block.

For example: the regimental number block for the New Brunswick depot battalion is 3255001 to 3280000.

Enter 3255001 in the appropriate field, and then note the birthplace, then repeate with 3255002, 3255003, etc.

If you want to include more than just the country, that would be great; but for starters, I'm only interested in country.

Also, make note of the regimental number at the top of the actual attestation paper as opposed to the one on the Soldiers of the First World War--there are sometimes mistakes.

It is a little boring so even if you only want to do a few hundred, it would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know what unit you're interested in doing.

Ken

CEF database project proposal...
Just curious to see if there would be any interest in a project to compile information on birthplaces of members of the CEF... along the lines of this:
http://ca.geocities.com/scheffkg.rm/man_regt.html

I think it would be a useful tool since many people are researching veterans from specific towns, cities, regions, etc.

Currently, I have about 20,000 records. There were approximately 600,000 men in the CEF, so it will take some effort... Anyone interested?

Thanks,
Ken

I do not know where "bullturn" is, but my mother, Thelma GRUBER attended the one-room school near corner of 322 and Pine City Road. She called it the Chestnut Grove School and others called it Black School. It was land from Paul Berlin BLACK and his brother John R. BLACK, that's why it was called the Black School.
Let me know.
Marsha Allen
Mesa, AZ

Re: Marriage annulment, divorce, bigamy

Dear Brian, I realize this isn't exactly the reply you were requesting but I'm hoping, as an expert, you can give me some advice. My grandfather "Charlie" Bartoli, born in Malta and grandmother Amy Bond, born in Liverpool, England were married in 1922 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My mother Louise, was born in Wpg. 1923 and was placed in an orphanage at approx. 3-4 years old. She was told her father committed Bigamy by marrying her mother and was deported from Canada, back to Malta or more likely, to living in the USA. My mother never heard from her mother or father again. I am trying to find anything out about Charlie or Amy. Do you know if there are records on deportations, annulments, bigamy in the 1920's? Anything you can suggest would be so helpful. Thank you.

Many thanks for the very kind comments ... It is nice to know that my efforts are appreciated.

May I ask where you live, and what your research interests are? The only other "Aldo" I have seen on line seems to be interested in Amerindian research on Baffin Island (at least that is my presumption of his interest) - so I am not sure if you are the same person or not.

Looking forward to your reply.

Cheers!
J.

Greetings from Toronto - I am hoping some of you will help me with a new lecture I am preparing. Do you have any members of your family who were divorced, seperated, involved in a bigamy, or an annulment in any Canadian Province BEFORE 1930? Did any of these situations in your family involve an American divorce, and subsequent remarriage in either the US or Canada? If so, and you have any of the documentation such as newspaper accounts, legal papers, family letters describing the situation, etc., I would be very appreciative of a COPY. My address is Box 74503, 270 The Kingsway, Etobicoke, Ontario M9A 5E2, or please respond to me privately off-line at gilchrists@idirect.com Thanks!
Scotland's Old Parish Registers

Hello,
Some of you will already be acquainted with the FreeCEN project bringing to you a free to search database of Scottish censuses. I am the Angus co-ordinator for that.

Perhaps you will also have heard of FreeREG which is a sister project bringing to you a database of entries in the Old Parish Registers. This will be a more comprehensive database than the IGI and is fascinating to transcribe.

You can find out more about all of these projects, including a link to the FreeCEN database, at http://www.lymmlines.co.uk/Angus/Angus_FreeCEN_Home.htm

I have been given permission to send for the OPRs for single parishes where we have no county co-ordinator as yet. This will begin next week.
If you have access to a microfilm/fiche reader, you are very welcome to join us as a transcriber - we've all had help from free sources and it is good to give something back!

We will provide the film, software and support. I look forward to hearing from you.

Anne Fish
Scotland Organiser for FreeREG
www.freereg.org.uk

Freereg Project: old parish registers

I am pleased to announce that film of Angus(Forfar) is now available for transcription, with Moray, Fife, Banff, East Lothian, Orkney and Aberdeen following soon.

The aim of this project is to transcribe the Old Parish Registers for a free-to-view site similar to that of its sister projects, FreeCEN and FreeBMD. It is a great way to give back something to those people who have helped you along the way, and is an opportunity to view the pages as they were actually written.

To take part you will need to own or have access to a Microfiche/film reader and the ability to construct a simple spreadsheet on your computer. Software is provided along with lots of support.

We need transcribers (lots) and also more County co-ordinators who will look after the distribution of film and files. If you are interested you can contact me, Anne Fish, Scotland Project Manager, or you can go to www.freereg.org.uk for more information.

Are you still collecting the one-room school house information? I have a photograph of the Lewis School located about one mile east of Frills Corners. My grandfather was teacher at age 18 and appears with children and parents, mostly mothers, in a photo made in 1898-99. I have his original test results certificate which names the superintendent who gave him a one-year provisional teaching certificate. Later, he attended college and moved out of Clarion County to the Ross Run School, living in Nebraska, PA.
