If you looking for info on a soldier that was on the Sultana contact me. I have the Appendix A & B from the book "Disaster on the Mississippi" by Gene Salecker. It is most complete accounting of survivors. Info includes soldier name, regiment and company, lived or died, injuires, where hospitalized, etc. Mark Davis Hartford City,Indiana md9105@skyenet.netps- would like to talk to any descendants of "Survivors of the Sultana" Association about reunions,Sultana Medals, stories, burial sites of Sultana soldiers.

Re: Sultana Deaths/Survivors
Were there children on board? I am looking for the Conley family. Two small children survived a shipwreck and were adopted by a family named Arnold.

Re: Sultana Deaths/Survivors
Didnt see any Conley. There was a Spikes family on board.Husband,wife,3 daughters,3 sons,1 niece. All died except 1 of the sons.1 son was unaccounted.

Re: Sultana Survivor Jonathan ROACH
He is listed as Jonathan Reach,1st Al Cavalry,co M,private. His fate has a (?),so I assume he was an unknown. Caswell C. Tipton was in the 3rd TN Cav,co B,private. He is listed as Lived, went to Gayoso Hospital for exhaustion. There was also a James Tipton and Peter H. Tipton in the same company that both survived. James went to US Sanitary Commission Soldiers Home and Peter went to Overton Hospital for a slight contusion. Both were privates Hope this helps. Mark Davis Hartford City,Indiana md9105@skyenet.net

Re: Sultana Survivor Jonathan ROACH
Mark, I read your message because it was "gatewayed" to the Sultana mailing list, my question is, how did you find this information? my 2xggrandfather was William Franklin Battles,3rd Tenn.Cav. his NARA records didn't mention anything after the correction from lost on the Sultana to survived, I would love to find more information like this. Thanks,Donna

Re: Sultana Survivor Jonathan ROACH
Donna Gene Salecker book " Disaster on the Mississippi" by Naval Institute Press 1996 is the book with most complete listing of Sultana survivors and victims. That is the source of the info. William F. Battles of the 3rd TN Cav,co K is listed as lived. There is also a Isaac Battles in the same regiment & company that is listed as Died.(I assume they were related). Both were privates.Out of the 34 Company K members on board only 13 lived. I remain your obedient servant, Mark Davis Hartford City,IN md9105@skyenet.net

Re: Sultana Survivor Jonathan ROACH
Thanks Mark, I have Jerry Potters book which my son gave me for Christmas last year, I want Gene Eric Salecker's book but haven't found it yet. Issacc Battles was Franks first cousin, they were both from St.Clair county Alabama,Franks brother James Monroe Battles missed being a casualty because a doctor would not let him go on board the Sultana because he was sick with pneumonia, this doctor was a hero. Thank you,Donna
