Lee Ann;
My sincere thanks. I look forward to receiving the information about your ancestor. I am working on an archival project at Arkansas State University and am hoping that many decendants of Sultana passengers will send me the stories of their family members.

Thanks for offerning Mark

My great great James Madison Phenicie was a survivor, would you mind checking if he is on the list? We have his transfer docs from Andersonville, in those he is listed as J.M. Phenicie, corporal, Ill regiment, however he was actually with the Indiana volunteers. We have documents that he was a survivor, curious if he is on the list you have. Phenicie is one of the rarest and unusual names so sometimes the spelling is butchered Finnessy etc.
thanks
Lee Ann

Thanks so much for this. Four brothers fought in the Civil war James, George W Phenice (should also be records for him, they are listed on this site...same company taken to Andersonville with James but was taken Oct 1864 to Milledgeville (where strangely he was allowed to vote in presidential election..then to Florida and finally paroled for exchange in Florence Ala.) John and William also brother in civil war...amazingly they all survived. Lewis Phenicie was a first cousin. Thanks again

Surnames: Devlin, Develin, Denver
Hello Mark, I am researching a soldier who is buried in Oahu Cemetery in Honolulu. His name, as recorded on his tombstone, is James Devlin. Other sources list him as James Develin or James Denver. Devlin appears to have served in the 1st Delaware Infantry and in the (Union) 10th Tennessee Cavalry. The same source that puts him in the 10th Cavalry states that he was a Sultana survivor. Does he appear in the appendices to the Salecker book on the Sultana disaster?

Thanks,

Surnames: Battles, Brothers, Conn, Galloway, Gilliland, Hopper, Lee, Morton
Mark - A couple of years ago I ran across references to one or more of my family names in reference to the Sultana - some survived and some were lost & I think at least one of the family names included brothers (lost and survived). I can't remember the family names though.

Looking for anyone from Alabama, specifically Etowah, Blount, Marshall, DeKalb, St. Clair Counties. Surnames include: Battles, Brothers, Conn, Galloway, Gilliland, Hopper, Lee, and Morton. I am especially inclined to believe it was the Battles line. I would suspect either these were civilians or workers, as they were likely from a family of Confederates vs. Union soldiers.

If it's not too much trouble, could you check those names or locations?

Thanks!
