Grid format, expanding on information given at end of person

I am using the grid format, detail format use sentence. After a persons tags/events are shown, the children are listed at the end. My settings currently just list the children out as 1, 2, 3, 4...There is no explanation of text that says, Person 1 and Person 2 had the following children. Person 1 and Person 3 had the following children.

Is this possible? I have seen other sites with this so assume it is a standard setting/change, however I can not find it in help, etc.

Thanks

Shaun,

On August 2nd, I gave you instructions for how to eliminate the "Family" section at the bottom of each person's person page entry. Based on those instructions, you shouldn't see the list of children.

Assuming that you are back to using the original version of the Grid Format, then what you should is as follows.

For a person with a single co-parent (spouse or someone else with whom the subject had children), the Grid format shows the word "Family" in column 1, and the name of the co-parent in column 2. Beneath that, column 1 has the word "Child" or "Children", and column 2 has the name and lifespan of the first child. For subsequent children, column 1 is blank and column 2 has the name and lifespan of the next child.

For a person with multiple co-parents, the Grid format shows the word "Family" in column 1 as well as a number, i.e., "Family 1", Family 2". The list of children is the same.

If the co-parent is excluded (because of being alive or because of the flag filter), and "Show Excluded Principals" is not checked, then the co-parent's name will not be shown in column 2.

Hi John

The instructions you gave me for removing the children are fine and working correctly. I am using both settings at present. However I still appear to be having difficulties with the showing of the family name, etc that you described in your reply.

My current settings give me the following where the children section is:

Col 1 || Col 2 || Col 3

1 || blank || Name of 1st mother of children
1 || 1 || Child 1 name
2 || 2 || Child 2 name
3 || 3 || Child 3 name
2 || || Name of 2nd mother of children
|| 1 || Child 1 name
|| 2 || Child 2 name
|| 3 || Child 3 name
3 || || Name of 3rd mother of children
|| 1 || Child 1 name
|| 2 || Child 2 name
|| 3 || Child 3 name

This seems different from what you described, so I presume that I have a setting incorrect somewhere which I can not find. I have the settings Grid and Use Sentence. The numbers appear as 1, 2, 3, etc and not Family 1, Family 2, etc. Do you know where the setting is as I thought I was using the standard grid default.
I have also attached a screenshot

Shaun,

My last reply was inaccurate. I left out the middle column, the one with the children numbers. Your output looks almost right for the Grid format. From your screenshot, the only thing missing is the word "Family" before the number in the first column. That string of characters comes from the Grid.xml file, the copy of it, if you made a custom Format. I can think of three potential causes for why the string is missing:

1 - You set the Language.Site Language to some language that is not supported by Second Site. You can do that, but you have to edit the Grid.xml (or MyGrid.xml) file if so.

2 - You made a custom Format based on the Grid Format, but you didn't copy the Grid.xml file.

3 - You made a custom Format based on the Grid Format, but some edit you made broke the logic that inserts the word "Family".

Hope this helps.

John

Hi John,

I am using the standard grid layout with no alterations to the standard files. I have however copied/created in my UDF 2 files called Mygrid which are .xml .xsl

1) I have created a custom language by copying EnglishUK to English2. This is the language set to under Language.Site Language.

It appears to be fine when I select the language to be English, however not when I have English 2 selected.

Thanks

Shaun,

When you use a new language so you can have SS-specific TMG sentences, you should change the Language.Sentence Language property. Leave the Language.Site Language set to English.

If you iwant to change one or more words or phrases used to build the site, you can change them via the "Strings" section of the Second Site user interface.
