I am playing with Rootsmagic as a possible alternative to TMG. I imported my database from TMG, and Rootsmagic is showing my great-great-grandparents as married to each other. They weren't. They were both married, but not to each other! How do I "unmarry" them, yet keep them both as parents of my great-great-grandfather?

If there is no marriage fact then RM does not assume they are married. If you want to change the labels from husband and wife then the alternatives offered are partners or father & mother. You get to these by selecting one of the partners and editing them, within the edit screen select the other and in the right side box there are two drop down options for the labels. Don't forget to click the Save button at the bottom of that sub-screen when you have made your choice.

If you have other more technical questions about TMG & RM you should try the Rootsmagic forum..

I have a large number of couples for whom I have no marriage event, either because they had children but never married, or because I have no clue as to when or where the event occurred.

For that first category I created a new custom fact named "NOT MARRIED", assigned as a couple-specific fact. I added this so I could see it in the narrative reports. I give the fact a date if I feel the need to sort it, but do not use the date in the fact's sentence. If you like that idea, RMG has an excellent Help file, and they have very helpful forums on their own website.

Your great grandparents were not married, but they were a couple for the purposes of genealogy, as was stated before, they wouldn't be considered married by the program. I created my custom fact so I could tell the difference between those I knew to not be married and those about whom I wasn't sure.

A common tag used by several program in the FAM record is, _NMR meaning "not married" and can be used in place of the MARR tag.

It would look something like this in a GEDCOM:

0 FAM
1 HUSB
1 WIFE
1 _NMR Y
2 TYPE ?

EDIT: TYPE could be a one word term you think describes the relationship, "partners", "rape", "fling". I use these terms with caution, and many times use nothing because I can't describe it or don't know.
