how about this scenario:
get the chart ready to print using Reunion on your mac. Then go file -> print.
BUT in the window that comes up, choose the option "Save as PDF". Put that pdf on the thumbdrive and carry it to your printer (office max or whoever) and see what options they can offer you.

Reunion 9

Hello,

I use Reunion, version 9. I want to print out the 9 generations I have on my husband's side for a reunion coming up at the end of June. It's 296 pages (!!!), and I'd love to use a professional site to do it, but they want more than I can afford at this time.
What I was thinking of is to put the chart on a flash drive and take it to Office Max or a similar place and have them print it out for me on several of the largest sheets of paper they have in stock. Unfortunately, that requires that they have Reunion installed on their computers. Does anyone know of a way that this could be done on the cheap? Or, barring that, does anyone know of a website that offers a descendant chart that I can fill out by hand?
Thanks!
Re: Reunion 9 or Family Tree Maker - Which one?

I have a large file, around 180,000 people, in my father's tree. He worked in his old pc, and now I would like to continue with maintenance of his work. I have a macbook pro and I started using Family Tree Maker for Mac, at the beginning it did not work at all, now after the last update it works, very slow, but works. But the problem I have is that every time I try to compact the file the software crashes and the next time I open it it says that I should compact the file. I need to export the file in gedcom format to be able to upload it to geneanet.org where my father published his work, and it has to be under 10 me gas to be able to to it. My FTMM file is 455 MB rigth now, when I export it as gedcom it becomes 10 MB. I do not like to make changes directly in geneanet because it can't be undone.

My question is, I am considering switching to Reunion, but I want to be sure it would work well with my file before paying 100 for it, I already lost 60 with the FTMM.

I made a post with a question about the problem with FTMM, and almost every answer was that it definitely won't work, that I should change softwares.

Anyone has any experience with Reunion and large files? Any advice?

Thanks
This is an old thread and I hope someone is still watching.

To export from Reunion 8.06 on a Mac to Ancestry, I created a GEDCOM and transferred it to Ancestry. No problems on the surface. My tree is intact. BUT my Note fields did not transfer nor did my Reunion sources. Note fields are very important to me. In the "old" days (1993) I was using PAF (Personal Ancestry File) from the Mormen Church. They had no sources implemented and recommended the sources (referencing our paper sources) be put in the Note Field. When I transferred from PAF to Reunion my Note fields and everything else made the transfer. Losing them on the way from Reunion to ancestry is bad news for me. The people at Ancestry were no help. Reunion has the note fields in their GEDCOM.

Has anyone found a work around to lost Note Fields?

Ron

Did you figure it out and fix it yet? I'm not sure I'm following your problem exactly but it sounds like somewhere in your tree, you have a your 3rd great grandfather assigned as a child of the wrong parents. Is that the problem? Here's how to fix it:

1. First make a backup file in case something goes wrong. (Look at the menu bar across the top, under File, select Save a Backup Copy.)

2. In the Family View in your tree, select the Correct parents. Call these people Name 1 and Name2. Your 3rd great grandfather won't be shown as a child because that's what needs to be fixed.

3. Locate your 3rd great grandfather's name in the list on the right. Call him Name 3. Drag him (Name3) from the list on the right into the Children box under the correct parents (Name1 and Name2). You'll get a pop-up confirmation message saying "Add Name3 as a child of Name1 and Name2?" Select Add. Since he is already assigned to some other parents, you will get a pop up asking do you want to Duplicate or Move. Select Move. This will move him (AND EVERYONE BELOW HIM) to the correct family.

If you actually made TWO errors and assigned children to him that belong to someone else, just repeat the above for them.

Remember that Reunion comes with a Sample Family so you could PRACTICE this on the sample file first before you mess with your real family. (For example, move Caroline Bouvier Kennedy to be a child of her grandfather Joseph Patrick Kennedy.)

Bottom line, you can move people around wherever you want, you shouldn't have to re-enter any of your data.

Good luck!

Skip
At least one of my inserts has gotten reversed. Instead of saying that the relationshiop is my 3rd great grandfather, it says he is my in law. In fact he is a blood relation. Can this be fixed? Anyone else have this happen? Thanks, Cyndi My concern is that now all earlier connections will be affected. My chart goes back to my 9th great grandparents, and now is isn'r correct. Will I need to re do each and every single one?

My grandson is doing a family history project. His mother asks if I can put my reunion files into a Gedcom and send them to him.I have online instructions but it doesn't work. First - mark the person to start with. I assume that means highlight one of the family members (I chose my grandson) and then click Mark. I get a screen that has options (mostly greyed) and I keep clicking MARK. The instructions say I should get something that says CLOSE, but I get nothing like that. Just that Mark page. I'm feeling frustrated. I must have done something wrong but I'm only on step ONE!

Please know that I am feeling the fool and so heartsick as I write but I have accidentally deleted 10 years of work from my Mac thinking I had a backup and I do not. I have downloaded a file recovery software that groups its findings by file type (3 or 4 letter extension) and you kind of need to know what you're searching for. Can anyone tell me what file type a Reunion family file would fall under?

I would be so grateful for any help :')
Reunion app on iPad

Anyone using this? What's your experience? Any glitches? I've downloaded and installed. It's pricey for an app -- $14.99 -- I don't think I've paid this much for any app -- but as you can see I *did* -- and syncing with my files on my laptop was amazingly easy-- via wi-fi. So easy it felt wrong. And the interface on the iPad is lovely. I think I even prefer it to the original Mac interface. I haven't tested resyncing yet-- making changes on both MacBook then different changes in the iPad and then seeing how it syncs. Guess that's what sent me here. Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks.

Here's another genealogy programme that looks promising. I've already download the iPad app. You can email a Gedcom to yourself and open it in Heredis. Here are the details:
Heredis for Mac is changing genealogy. Using all the latest development technologies, it is based on an environment entirely re-thought from A to Z. Compatible with Mac, PC and iOS platforms, it will communicate with the Heredis Blue Suite. The Heredis Blue Suite is re-inventing genealogy and offers a whole new vision of this science, because all the Heredis programs communicate with each other. It offers a unique range of programs adapted to each genealogy, be it for Mac, for PC or for iOS.

Reunion is a software program for Mac that also has an app for iPad. It doesn't allow you to search for records within the app, but doesn't require wifi to show your tree. It stays on your iPad and then you can sync with your Mac desktop/laptop later. Not sure if the make for Windows though.
I have the Reunion IPad app, and have tried synching with my Reunion tree on my Mac. It automatically updates from one to the other, but my experience is that it creates errors. In particular, the Notes for an individual sometimes appear under someone else's name, and not under the person where ther were created. I suspect this might happen because I have a relatively big tree with over 25,000 people. I no longer use the sync function, which makes the whole IPad app somewhat useless for me.

HI, yes you can merge gedcoms. I have done it several times, working form laptop to Iphone app. Sometimes it results in duplicates if the names are not EXACT. When you open you Reunion program Look on hte tool bar for the MANUAL icon and click on tht. search for Merge Gedcoms, or just merge and it will tell you how to do it. I run a "Match and Merge" (also expalined in the manual) frequently to make sure I have not entered duplicate people or have a few "orphans" running around in my Files.
HTH (Hope this helps) Happy searching!!

Is it possible to merge one Reunion GEDCOM into another one?
If it is possible to merge two GEDCOMs, how is this done without importing the notes causing the note page to be repeated. FTM used to have the pull-down ini. and nulling it so the notes would not be duplicated. I understand that is no longer possible.

Is it possible to merge two people who are the identical?
Sorry for geeking out here, but in the current computing environment, everyone should make use of a good whole-disk encryption or encrypted virtual file system.

Yes...keep records on paper in case of disaster, but when it comes to your genealogy software... keep your database on an encrypted volume, as you should with any other sensitive information--your finance file, your tax records, your sensitive correspondence, etc...

It's a personal choice. Reunion is more expensive. It's very stable and has great features. MacFamilyTree is cheaper and I felt less impressive for my requirements. That said, my husband loved their 3D report.
Download the demos, play around with them. See what you like/dislike about them. If possible, use the same GEDCOM to compare how they work with your file. I also tried iFamily for Leopard.
Best of luck.

I had FTM for my PC. After switching to Mac, I tended to let everything accumulate online here before realizing I could lose everything if Ancestry.com ever folded (that's not saying they're in trouble). After research, I went for Reunion. It works well for me. With the GEDCOM I created here, I was able to move everything, including notes to Reunion. Photos and PDF's were the only thing that didn't move. That was easily fixed manually, as I didn't have much.

I Posted this yesterday, not sure what happened to it! Anyway.....I called Leister ( Reunion developers) and asked why this file will not open. I was told it was probably corrupted because links to the Reunion program were missing. He asked me to send it to him and he would try to fix it.

Got an email yesterday that he had opened the file and added the code that was missing and sent it back to me. It was originally a Reunion 8 file and he updated it to a reunion 9 file AND sent me the GEDCOM also. I suceeded in opening the file and have sent both back to Katy. YEA!!!!
Happy researching Katy!!

Transfer Reunion to Ancestry.com thru Family Tree Maker Mac 2

Hopefully, some will find this useful though not everyone will have the same requirements…so please read carefully before you go mucking about with your own stuff.

Problem Description & Caveats:
My cousin has done extensive on-the-ground research and put all of it into Reunion using Notes and Source Citations. She used no multimedia so I didn’t have to worry about losing any of that in the process. I wanted to combine her tree with my tree on Ancestry.com without losing her Reunion Notes and Citations — and devise a method to keep them up to date as we both continued with our work in the separate tools. To avoid confusion and not burden my cousin with this process, I decided to make her Reunion updates one-way from Reunion to Ancestry.com.

The tools I used:
•	Reunion 9c
•	Don Worth’s Script to "Convert Reunion GED file so that sources are reasonably displayed in Ancestry.com.” Follow the instructions to create the script here: http://www.reuniontalk.com/showpost.php?p=29657&postcoun...
•	Family Tree Maker for Mac 2 (FTM-Mac2)
•	Early 2011 MacBook Pro with 8G memory

Synching Steps: (There are multiple ways to do this…this is just one way that worked for me.)

1. Created a blank tree with a unique tree name and imported the GEDCOM
•	Exported Reunion to GEDCOM using Don Worth’s script
•	In FTM-Mac2, created New Tree (File->New). Gave the new tree a starting name (just my home name with sex and birth date). Then filled in the New tree name field with the name of desired “contributor tree.”
•	Imported the Reunion GEDCOM (File->Import).
2. Downloaded the Ancestry.com tree
•	In FTM-Mac2 (File->New). Clicked the “Download from Ancestry” radio button, but UNTICKED the “Link to Ancestry” tick box.
•	When the download was complete, FTM-Mac2 gave me the option of merging with another tree but I chose not to do that. Instead, I created a unique “host tree” name to avoid the possibility of confusing it with the original Ancesty.com name.
3. Merged “Contributor” with “Host” tree
•	Closed the “contributor tree” and in the “host tree” selected merge (File->Merge) and selected the “contributor tree”to merge.
•	Then… life got a little complicated with lots of dialog boxes and lots of options. The “host file” in the dialog boxes was my “contributor tree” and the other tree was the “contributor” or some other term that I can’t remember without going through the process again. In my case, I chose to make the “contributor” the preferred but to also keep the content from the Ancestry.com downloaded tree or “host tree.” I did this because my cousin’s Reunion-based “contributor tree” had such detailed sources, notes, and attributions.

That’s it!! Hope it helps someone…but as always YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).
I'm giving up on FamilyTreeMaker for Mac and buying Reunion.
Too many crashes & corruptions in the new file/database. A number of people were made their own parents in the tree, but with a single entry in the index. The only way I could fix it was to deleted them, read them & reattach them to the sources.
After the experience I've had with the software, I don't think I could trust the new version that's apparently on it's way.
I've used the trial of Reunion with my new little database and it all looks good. I had some questions that I sent to their support & got answers promptly (sometimes the next day, due to timezones, but in my book that's great) as opposed to the FTMM support that comes back with the generic page/link in their knowledge base, whether that is related to the query or not.
If you go with FTMM, the best of luck - the support on the forum is better than their own technical support.
Best of luck.

Thank you for reminding me there is a lock for an individual records. What concerns me is that no lock exists that I know of to keep my records private as a whole. I don't like anyone coming into my computers since I had two go to the trash heap after being fried by invaders. Since Social Security and medical records can be accessed and your relatives given as evidence of identity in many instances for us older folks who trustingly gave store clerks our social security numbers to be able to use checks for payments in past times, our lives are much more vulnerable to identity theft and abuse. So with Apple being the greatest protectors of my personal computer stored information, I am surprised they don't have a lock for the whole program. I do have the Preferences for Safari blocking as match intrusion as possible now. I caution anyone from putting their own name and information in any tree that goes online. If there is nothing sacred or off limits in society there isn no reason for any religions. It turns prayer into useless prattle. So that is my concern for the next generation since my personal information made it's way around the world without my permission. Being aware is being wise. Only put people before 1900 on your computer. Keep the rest in paper files which can always be read with our without electricity. It is our children's future that can be put on the line vulnerable to the world.

Reunion is a far more solid app and is well supported. It won't let you down. The user interface is well laid out and easy to pick up. It is not phased by same sex marriages, adoption, or any of the other non linear family bonds. I thoroughly recommend it.
I have recently bought Family Tree Maker 2011 for Mac because of the integration with the site but so far I am not impressed. I assumed that it would be fully synced to my web-hosted trees. Instead I find that you download the whole tree. While it is true that you can then run the web-based searches directly from the computer-based tree you would then have to do the whole thing again to update the web-based tree. What good is that to anybody? Although you can upload the tree back onto the site it has to be a new tree so you start from square one and you would have to re-invite all your collaborators. This makes the whole integration thing ineffective.
So, as things stand at the moment you can integrate with the site equally well with either app. My advice is to pay the extra money and go with Reunion. It's just better.
There is only one smart reason for buying FTM as well: if you buy it as part of a six month package you can think of it as getting the app thrown in for free. This is what I did, so I don't feel bad about having bought the app. I will continue to use Reunion with the Ancestry website as my principle research tool because it is the best resource out there and if they add syncing to future versions of FTM I will move over because that would make it invaluable.
Hope that makes sense. Good luck in your decision.
