Re: SPICER FAMILY IN DICKSON TENNESSEE-SPICER HOLLOW

Your posting was put on The Master Genealogist board. This board is for users of The Master Genealogist computer program. I trust that the board administrator will move your query and my response to the Dickson County, Tennessee board.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to identify/contact any Spicer relatives of your grandfather who still live in Spicer Hollow (which I assume is in Dickson County, Tennessee).

I looked at your family tree online and dis some quick research on Ancestry and FamilySearch. You did not mention your grandfather's name, but I figured out that he was Nathan H. Spicer, born Jan. 1885.

From what I could determine quickly, it appears that your grandfather was the only child of Queen and her first husband or relationship, whose name was Spicer. Since Nathan lived in Ohio and his children were born there, I would not expect to find any of those Spicers living back in Tennessee. I assume you already know this.

Therefore, if you want to find Spicer relatives in Dickson County, you'll have to go back one generation further to Nathan's father. You do not have him identified on your family tree.

You had his mother listed as Queen Emily Spicer in your query and Queen Spicer Lewis in your family tree. Apparently her maiden name was Evans, so that should be the name you use in your family tree. If you want to research Queen's ancestry, then you should be working with the Evans name.

Queen Evans married Columbus Lewis in 1889 in Dickson County. They can be found on the 1900 and 1910 census there. In 1900, there is a boy listed as Zib? or Zeb, who was apparently Queen's son, but not by Columbus. This may be Nathan.

Nathan's marriage license in Franklin County, Ohio in 1913 gives his mother's maiden name as Queen Evans and his father's name as Hilliard Spicer.

I looked into Hilliard Spicer briefly. If I have the right man, he was born 1858/1860 and lived in Dickson County. I located him there in the 1870 census. Hilliard married Mary Henry in 1884. It appears that she was the mother of his children shown in the 1900 census, at which time Hillard was listed as widowed.

If this is the correct Hilliard Spicer, then I doubt that he and Queen were married -- or at least I could not find a marriage record for them. Since the birthdate found for Nathan was January 1885, that would make his birth only a few months after Hillard married Mary Henry. Obviously more research is needed on this matter.

If you find that I am correct in my identification of this Hillard Spicer as Nathan's father, then you should be able to identify his siblings and trace their decendants through (census records, obits, wills, burials, etc.), or trace some of the other children of Nathan. This may lead you to Spicers who still live in Dickson County.

I do suggest that you make an attempt to locate every person in all available records (especially census records) and attach those records to your Ancestry family tree. That will help a great deal in keeping track of what you know and what you need.

As for where your father spent his childhood, it was probably with the Columbus Lewis family, so you may need to investigate that further also.

As you do your research, keep your eye on the Find-A-Grave website. There are burials listed for many Spicer names in Dickson County. Some of these may be your relatives and may be buried very close to where they lived.

Good luck with your search.

Sharon

My Grandfather was from there and his mothers name was Queen Emily Spicer. If, anyone has any information please feel free to respond. Also, His wife was Anna Barnett Spicer.

Have been searching for many years, but was unable to get any help.
I quess I'll have to try it.

In MS-Word (by example) for TMG to work like I would expenct it must insert an XE tag to create an index, so if I want all names for an individual to be indexed each name would have to be noted with an XE tag. I would want the primary instance of the individual to have the name bold in the name index and any other instances of the name to be to be normal in the index.

Similar things happen with TOC, chapter headings and subheadings, where either tags or text types are used to generate various items in the TOC or end notes and foot notes.

Thanks

By "the software" do you mean TMG?? TMG will generate whatever options you ask it to produce in regard to indices, table of contents, headers and footers, titles, etc. The book will be created in the word processing software of your choice. As to if your wp software accepts the options you choose in TMG is another matter which TMG cannot control (I would have no idea why they won't accept your choices). Cites will print out in either footnotes or endnotes. BTW, TMG will give you a 30 day trial use of the entire program before you have to pay for it.

You produce a book in TMG with whatever word processing software you have and decide to use. Any limitations that exist in creating a book will be limitations imposed by that software, and the hard drive of your computer. What TMG will do is produce the genealogy reports and charts you decide to include, often in the native format of your word processor.

Book related reporting questions

I am currently using Legacy software and really like the report formats, but I've run into a limitation that just won't do. I'm considering a switch to TMG but have a couple questions about producing a book.

1. Having a title page, copyright, dedication, preface, etc. is really nice. Can I include such things in a book from TMG?

2. Legacy has a limitation which essentially results in being able to include a maximum of 200 chapters, i.e. reports such as a family group report, a decendancy chart for an individual, etc. Does TMG have a restriction like that?

3. Legacy can produce an index of individuals at the end of the book citing the pages within the book where an individual appears. Can TMG produce a name index for its book?

If all you're going to tell me is to post these questions on Wholly Genes website, please don't reply.

How to generate a list of surnames SOLVED

I am making a webpaage and need a list of surnames. I need one group for my paternal side, one for my maternal, and the same for my wife.

I have the master genealogist and FMT and ancestry.com obviously, surely there must be a way to input an indivual and have the surnames of his or her ancestors generated in some program, but I cant find it. Ive researched online and through the ancestry.com manual but cant find anything like it.

I need them so that I can copy and paste them in alphabetical order in a group to a webpage, then go through them and link them to family pages.

I have probably a hundred so it will be a work in progress but i need to get started
any ideas?

Rob I applied your tmg advice to ftm.

Easy enough to do in TMG if you just want the direct ancestors. From Reports chose List of People and add a new filter for Is an Ancestor of. This will only give you DIRECT ancestors. I suspect that you might want a list of ALL relatives of each of the four principles. In that case you would need to set up a new FLAG, called for example Relative to and assign numbers 1-4 for each of the principles. IF you then setup the Add a Person screen to include this FLAG so that you can maintain consistency into the future. Now run the List of People Report with a filter of Relative to= 1 then 2 ........
Entering a hundred or so new flags will take a little time, it CAN be done automatically though this takes more juggling with variables to make it worthwhile. In fact ‘playing’ with a population of a hundred or so is a good way to make sure that your TMG setup, preferences and filters are giving you the best out of the program.
Regards Rob

The SSDI can be misleading. Examples I have run across in Texas are people taken to a major urban hospital from a rural area only to die there. These included men and women taken to a VA hospital. Also men and women taken to the Texas and Pacific Nursing Home in Marshall, Texas, until they died. A married couple I traced were then both taken back from Marshall to Indiana and buried in their hometown. They had been living in Dallas some two hundred miles from Marshall. Another was a man from Sherman, Texas, who went to a railroad hospital in Temple, Texas, which is in central Texas far away from where he lived. Texas does have a Texas death index on ancestry.com which does give the actual county. The information is also available on familysearch.org and comes from death certficates.

I know for a fact you are correct about SSDI death information not being the actual place of death. Example: Many of my ancestors have died in one county or hospital but actually lived in a different county. The sticky part is they have chosen to be buried in the family cemetery, located 100 miles away. Therefore, there are often 3 different locations one may find the same ancestor listed as place of death. Ugh!!

First physically move the files to the desired location. Second, in TMG, go to File - Maintenance - Validate File Integrity. Then Specify the Folders to Search (where the files are now residing). Want to rename all of my exhibit files and store them all in one folder.

Should they be renamed first and then moved; or moved first and then renamed?

What do you consider the most efficient/easiest method of renaming many exhibit files? Of relocating many exhibit files?

Katie
Rob,
Thanks for all your effort. I have worked around the problem by typing the first two pages of the chart for my book. I will go back to all your suggestions with a fresh approach when I am not working to a deadline so I might get it right for my next book.
Much appreciated.
Brenda

The options are under the FILE menu in wordpad as Page Steup.

IF your intention is to present a book, then you may be better off printing from Word, which has more options; OR producing a PDF file direct from TMG. I don't do this sort of thing, I only ever produce 'working' reports where appearance is a very low priority.

Rob

I replied to your last email but apparently it did not send as I cannot see it in our list of emails - so here goes again:
I am reluctant to bother you again but it would be good if I can sort this before I print my book. There is no Page Setup that I can see on TMG and there is nothing under Page Layout. The Printer Setup has choices but not Wordpad. Am I looking in the wrong places?
Thanks again, Brenda

Sorry for the delay, missed your reply.
If you have got no further.....
1 The text WILL wrap to column 1, sorry but that't how it is.
2 Landscape or portrait printing of a RTF file is sorted out by the program that does the printing, (I would use Wordpad) so make sure that's set correctly in Page Setup.
Rob

I think that you need to change your f-lock setting and that is usually done through the bios. Since your computer is new I suspect it did not come with a manual, so please check the support for the computer to see if it addresses f-lock settings. Sorry that I cannot offer more detailed help.

There is missing text on the screen view as well.
Following your advice:
I tested generating the report direct to the printer but the problem is still the same.
Next I generated to a file (RTF) and the text wrap works :) ... BUT the text that is wrapped is lined up to the left-hand margin, rather than under the person's name, so it looks a bit odd to say the least. Also, printing from RTF file prints in Portrait and ignores Landscape format.
I feel like I'm getting there but can you suggest something more.
Many thanks, Brenda

Is there anyone out there running FTM 2012 that would mind converting my TMG 8 file for me? My data files are fairly small. I'd like to move my TMG data over to FTM 2 for the Mac...any help would be greatly appreciated!

FYI, I purchased FTM2012 and cannot get it to reliably function in XP. Based on the hundreds of messages in their board section, I would say I am not alone. I got my data out of it and into TMG's latest version. So far, it seems to have completed the process fairly well. I am not as happy with the interface as FTM2012 but it certainly works MUCH MUCH better.
It all depends on exactly how stuff was entered into TMG and just what bells and whistles you used.

As you know, TMG's witness feature (one of its most powerful features) doesn't transfer by GEDCOM and I'm not really sure how direct imports of witnesses works into other programs.

I'd suggest trying a small dataset first using various options to see which gives you the best transfer before transferring your whole file. It will save you time in the long run. And as I've said, the people on the TMG mailing list can probably help with suggestions.

Andy Hatchett
One Community - One Standard!
www.fhiso.org
