MacFamilytree - impressions so far

After switching from FTMM2 to MacFamilytree a week ago, here is a small summary of my impression:

Pros: Superb interface, good charts & reports, free online research on familysearch.org (no monthly cost), real Mac app feeling, free web site hosting, icloud sync to other macs and iphones (click one checkbox and your tree is on all your devices!)

Cons: Familysearch access from within Mac Familytree is slow sometimes (they promised to fix it in the next weeks with an update, got a swift response from the support team), documentation is OK but not great

Overall, this is the best genealogy app on Mac or Windows I have used so far, the german based company "synium" has done a real great job.

Please post your review on the appropriate board. This board is for discussion of Family Tree Maker for Mac, not MacFamilyTree.

I rather enjoy seeing alternatives to Family Tree Maker from someone who has used FTM. With all the problems many people here may be interested in other options.

There is a category of genealogy software boards, pick and choose those you would like to view and/or participate in. There's a reason each program has its' own board. If you don't see a board for your preferred software, request a new one.

Frank Johnson is this year's Tony Knight. Both are disgruntled FTMM losers. Tony blathered endlessly of his perceived merits of Reunion of this board, but never once posted on the Reunion board. What does that tell you?

If you don't like FTMM, don't use it, it's as simple as that. Leave this board to those interested in function and operation of it.

If you don't like his posts, don't read them. I don't appreciate your attempt at censorship.

As my name was mentioned.
If someone has had problems with FTMM it is probably sufficient if they have move on to say that moving has/hasn't solved their problems.
As it happens I tried MacFamilyTree, and whereas it was much better than FTMM it was, for me, not adaquate. Reunion solves most of problems, but I still suffer from the odd crash and miss some of the FTMM features.
This is an experience for consideration by anyone who is having problems that no one can suggest a solution to or is unable to put up with.
If discussing the operation of FTMM, it is not unreasonable to compare the slow loading of FTMM with the almost instaneous loading of say Reunion.
Again on memory usage, if FTMM is gobbling memory, the fact that Reunion is very economic.
And so on.
The question underlying it all, is this a problem of the coding of FTMM,has speed etc been sacrificed for something else or is it a money problem?
As for posting elsewhere, there is a proper developer monitored board rung by Reunion which I read. Leaving aside the fact that problems seem to be limited, I cannot say that I have seen anything that I could contribute to.
Although my experiences of FTMM are getting old, I do have extensive experience of working with a larger database and if I can help someone with a problem related to that I will do so.

Sorry, I did not want to get you upset. I thought it would be good to compare MacFamilytree to FTMM. I have used FTM and FTMM quite a bit in the past and I thought that a simple pros and cons would be useful to some users who are looking for alternatives.

I think the various boards are full of posts comparing to other software products and certainly for me your posts confirmed my impressions. This is especially true when multiple issues exist with the software under discussion.

I've also tried out Reunion. While you are totally right about it being very resource efficient, I found the user interface lacking. The feature set seems great, but the user interface looks like it came straight from the 90s. If you do not care that much about charts or the user experience, Reunion is worth a look and they seem to have a great reputation in the Mac market.

But since " daciodan" (is he an admin on this board?) thinks we're "FamilyTreeMaker losers" we should discontinue the discussions of alternatives for us "FamilyTreeMaker losers"...

There is an update for this software on the Mac today. Supposed to address the Family Search issues. Have installed it but haven't worked with it yet.
