Legacy or Family Tree Maker?
I've been using RootsMagic for decades and am now looking for a new program due to my frustration with it's lack of interface with my ancestry.com trees (gedcom imports don't work well). I know that FTM can automatically sync with my ancestry trees, but not sure how the interface is with Legacy. Several online reviews have Legacy as the top-rated program.
Any suggestions, feedback, legacy issues, etc. are most appreciated! Thanks so much, Beth

Re: Legacy or Family Tree Maker?
Legacy does not interface with the online ancestry tree. However it has other advantages. I double entry into Legacy and the online ancestry tree and sync my online ancestry tree to family tree maker. More information goes into Legacy and more notes than goes into the online tree. Family Tree maker has a few reports that are better than Legacy.
Also I understand that FTM 2014 will import Legacy directly. But I don't know that for sure.

Re: Legacy or Family Tree Maker?
Thanks so much, Barbara. It sounds from what you've written and other posts I've seen that using both Legacy and FTM is the best way. However, buying both isn't in the budge right now ;)
I used to use my computer database as the main place for recording info, but got in the bad and lazy habit of using the Ancestry online tree. Now there's so much online that isn't in my computer ... Maybe I should start with FTM to get everything from Ancestry on my computer and then can later get Legacy and import into it. PLUS restart saving records, pix, etc. to my computer when I find something on Ancestry ;)
Again, thanks so much! Happy Holidays! Beth

Yes definitely at least download from Ancestry to ftm even if you choose not to sync.

Re: Legacy or Family Tree Maker?
You import a file from ancestry into FTM in FTM's Plan Workspace > New Tree tab > Import an ancestry tree. If the FTM is logged into ancestry, you will see a list of your ancestry trees to choose from to import directly into FTM. If FTM is not logged into ancestry, you do that in the upper right corner of the Plan Workspace.
