keeping Legacy in sync with Ancestry

I have decided I much prefer Legacy (for one thing it keeps me honest with sources) but sometimes I like to accept a hint on Ancestry and also keep that synced with FTM for backup. So here's what I do. Go to the hint on a person where it shows the hint but don't select the image.. Yet. First I go to the left column and choose "printer friendly" which then can be selected and pasted into the source text which very nicely has a "remove HTML" option! And the source at the bottom can be copied and pasted into the source detail and any comments can be added. Then I go to the image and download it to my computer and thence to Legacy. Then and only then do I accept the hint on Ancestry. And then sync Ancestry online tree to FTM. I don't put everything I do in Legacy into Ancestry, but this gets everything I do in Ancestry into Legacy.

For an FTM user always looking for a better option, could you explain: "for one thing it (Legacy) keeps me honest with sources"??

I guess it is just harder to not put a source for a person than it is in Family Tree Maker, and the templates are less confusing. I did learn to just enter the information in FTM without using the templates; Legacy has two methods ["new" and "old"] but each one has several blanks to fill in for the needed information. So it is enough either easier, or suits my way of doing things better, that whereas in FTM I'd say, why bother, in Legacy, I try to complete the sources.

I have found that I can accept the hints in my ancestry tree then export the file and merge. This can be tedious in doing just that. Merging people can take a long time and needs to be watched closely. Also adding in the photos, docs, etc takes a long, long time. It seems as of now, there is no great solution. Unless your tree is also backed up to Family Search, which I will not do until they add a privacy feature allowing my tree to be kept private.

Your method, though more initial steps, seems to the most efficient one I have seen.

I would simply like to see Legacy sync with Ancestry website the very same way FTM does. Sure would be nice, especially when you are away from your computer, and could only access Ancestry and see your Legacy file. OR, even better, if Legacy would create their own web based version which was syncable with the desktop program.

Yes, I agree! I have thought about it, as you have, davidp_johnson. I love being able to use Ancestry but I don't want to be tied to FTM, I don't like it for various reasons. And it has proprietrary features too. I like the flexibility that Legacy offers plus many other reasons.

I would like to see that too, but Ancestry is money hungry and will never allow another software to sync with their website. Not easily, anyway.

I made a suggestion to Legacy for them to look at a piece of software called Living Cookbook. It has a copy paste way of entering data that works amazingly well. Yes, I know it's cookbook software, but it's very clever and I absolutely love it! To see it what I'm talking about, here's a very stoic video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-eTcnCSj6Y It helps relieve all that field adding data. You simply highlight parts of the text and tell it what it's for.

What's really amazing about it is its intuitiveness. If you saw the video, you saw the Prep and Cook times being added. Well, it knows to enter them the way they need to be entered. So if it says 1 hr 40 min and I prefer total minutes time, then it'll show it as 100 minutes, even though I highlighted 1 hr 40 min. This is a great example of how dates can be reformatted even if it's highlighted in a different date format.

I didn't receive much enthusiasm from the Legacy team with my suggestion. I was so disappointed because I feel that though it's not the perfect answer, it's a serious help.

Though this one only has so many buttons, Legacy could make sub buttons like you can click on Sources and it opens a set of buttons for sourcing. Then if it's a Census, it could open up a set of buttons for Census records. Those buttons could be usable even if we're entering a ton of different types of information all at one time. Granted, it would have to be person by person, but so what? Can you imagine how much time we'd save entering from Ancestry?

*sigh* Maybe if others send them the link to my post, they'll think more seriously about it. I think it's a grand idea.
