Not a dead product. I bought it in 2013. An update to Windows 7 made it inoperable but the company responded quickly with a fix.

It works and it finds an enormous number of information sources that you should check (some of which don't exist). Of course, receive a list that is 400 pages long (i have 12000 people in my tree) is overkill. Who has time to go through 400 pages?

Traderjoe - I have the same issue.

On the T0Do list page - just below the ToDo tab you will something that says "show all suggestions" with a down arrow on right. Click on it and you will see options of how you can refine the search. You can limit by your ancestors, date ranges, whether you want online only, etc. This will help you focus on the areas of interest.

It uses logic, let's say based on where the individual is born, where they may exist in life at a certain age, if they were living during a particular war or location to one, what/where they may be at a certain age.

The whole concept is to "fill the holes in the sand of your tree." It gets you LOOKING in the right direction -- or a direction you never thought about looking. I have to check a library in Ohio that has a book there, about an ancestor in Florida. How would I have known that by researching there it would lead me to the info?

As another poster wrote, I love the search by research location feature: I print it out and then when I get there, I know who I'm searching for at the library, for example.

The clean-up tool is perfect for your data missing county or city info. You can print a selection, fix them up and reload them back into Ancestry.com (manually or via FTM) and re-search your locations.

One example is some countries have been renamed after the war (Poland was called Russia, for example). Updating the country your ancestor was from will yield different search results.

Hope this helps you out. Been using the product for many years.

Did anyone ever actually resolve the issue at hand, gensmarts not working? I'm having the same problem.

As I recall, GenSmarts can't open a .ftm file if it is already open in Family Tree Maker 2014. Just close & exit FTM first. I think, that once it is open in GenSmarts that FTM will be able to open it.
