Going on a road trip this October and would love to find a program where I can feed in my info (GEDCOM?) and it will generate a map with my ancestors locations. I have Family Tree Maker 3, but Places will give you a map for just one person and his family. I have many lines basically all following the same path from about the mid 1600s.

FTM 3 is very old so I don’t know if this will work. Newer versions of FTM have a custom report that allows you to create a report for selected individuals. It has a filter in option that allows you to specify the criteria you want to use to select the people to include. You can filter in based on birth, marriage, death and burial place. You can also create a report that lists all the people buried in a particular cemetery.

I neglected to say I have a Mac, FTM 3 is the latest version. I do not see an option to create such a report in FTM3, but maybe I am overlooking it? Where is it accessed?

In FTM 2014 you go to Publish, Person Reports, Custom Report, Selected Individuals. This brings up a screen that allows you to specify the criteria used to include individuals. You have to experiment with it to fully understand all the options. This can be a very powerfully tool.

Great tip it works in FTM3 as well and will come in handy. What I am looking for with this road trip though is an actual map. That way when I am driving in a certain area I can see where my (husbands) ancestors were, and what town I should hit up next. I suppose I can manually create a map in Google, however that is very labor intensive.

I think there was something about mapping in Dick Eastman's Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter, but I couldn't tell you when he posted about it. See his blog at

I did a Google search for "map multiple locations". It brought up a number of sites that claim to do that. I did a quick try of one and it seems to work but I did not go very far. You will have to try them to find one that works for you.
