Creating statistical and graphical analysis reports from a family tree?

Classification: Query
I have a comprehensive family tree with over 5000 names in it and am really interested in analysing common themes and data across the whole tree.
eg number of people with same forename, number of people who were 'lawyers' or who died of same illness or at sea etc etc
I am basically looking for best way to generate bar or pie charts with this type of info.
I have a GEDCOM file and currently use Family Tree Maker v11 but this software does not generate the types of reports I am looking for.
I've downloaded GRAMPS which offers these types of features but I can't get the reports to run on my PC (they always time out).
Does anyone else have any suggestions about which free or paid for software to use?
Is it a good idea to maybe convert the gedcom file into excel and then generate my own reports in that way?
Really welcome any suggestions
