They are all good with some a little better than others. One of the biggest issues is that once you pick, and the more you use it's features the more you are locked into the one you picked. You can move from one to the other, but it become increasingly hard and you could loose some data.
So like Andy said look for free/trial software and experiment. Look at the reports it generates, are the complete with all of the information you maintain, are they the kind you want to share. Does it make good charts on your biggest families.
If you are a simple features user with no use for photo albums, DNA, and other stuff don't get sucked into the "I have to have that because" syndrome, like some car buyers. If you need a commuter car buy a commuter car, if you need a SUV with 4wd buy an SUV with 4wd.
If PAF is still available (they don't do maintainance/upgrade), it's free and basic.
