I work exclusively with Norwegian Genealogy.

I actually don't want to get too deep into the stuff on either ACOM or RootsWeb, because until I see that ACOM generates something that resembles a good GEDCOM as it relates to your NOTE and Picture issue I don't see a point.

What you need to do is identify the NOTEs and pictures that are currently in ACOM for one person.

Find that person in the GEDCOM (open the GEDCOM in NotePad, then search for the person) Finding a person in GEDCOM can be tricky but: "given name /surname/" may work no quotes but put the "/" around the surname.

Once there you can find the NOTE record and OBJE records. That would get you on the way to telling if the data comes out of ACOM is good. If not there then it is ACOMs problem.

If the data is there it could be coded wrong. That would be the next step.

Hello again kj_norway,

I’m sorry to hear you won’t be able to help me beyond what you already have.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to follow your suggestion to “identify the Notes and Pictures” for I can’t, as you instruct, “Find that person in the GEDCOM (open the GEDCOM in NotePad.”

As I said in my last message, “I just tried opening what I thought was the Gedcom I just created on 7/7/15 and just used and instead of opening into a file showing Gedcom text like you showed in your last message, it opened into what is apparently a copy of Family Tree Maker 2011 (not the 2012 I used to successfully used to use on RootsWeb nor the 2014 I now have, but don’t use for Ancestry).”

So in spite of the fact that the Ancestry instructions say I am downloading a Gedcom, what I am actually downloading is a copy of a Family Tree Maker 2011 version of the Ancestry tree.

I guess my only source of help remains Ancestry and they seem unwilling, perhaps their techs don’t even know how to, help me.

Unless you, or someone else with the patience to read this long message string, can help me. I guess I’m stuck with what Ancestry and RootsWeb will allow me to do. I guess these restrictions help them sell more Ancestry memberships.

Thanks though for what you’ve told me for at least I seem to have a little better insight into what seems to be happening and why.

Bruce,

You should "right click" rather than double click.

You could also open the file by first running Notepad then looking for the GEDCOM in the folder you saved it in. You will probably need to change the file type from .txt to "All Files" to see the GEDCOM file.

In Windows FTM sets the double click of a GEDCOM to automatically open FTM. This can normally be bypassed with a "right click".

Good Morning kj_norway

Thank you for your continuing efforts to help me.

Unfortunately, I am apparently such a computer illiterate that I can’t seem to follow your instructions.

When, as you instructed, I tried again to open the document I saved when I updated my backup RootsWeb tree on 7/7 following your instructions to right click rather than double click, it opened to FTM 11 again. Then I saw an option to :Save As” listing only FTM or Internet Explorer and tried Internet Explorer. When I right clicked this new Internet Explorer Icon it led back to a Download screen that again offered only FTM or Internet Explorer as choices and right clicking on them just brought me back to the Download screen.

I just can’t seem to get this file open in anything at all now and even if I did, and found the sort of text you describe, I don’t have a clue as to what I would do then.

I think you’re leading the blind here.

Should I download a new Gedcom/FTN 2011 or whatever it is by again following the Ancestry “Download Gedcom” instructions?

If I do that, won’t right clicking on that least me right back in to the blind alley I seem to be in now from right clicking the last one?

If I should somehow succeed in opening it and get text as you describe, what do I do then?

Thanks again for your patience and continuing efforts to help me.

Bruce

Bruce,

Did you try my alternate suggestion? Run NotePad first, change to "all file" then open the GEDCOM. See above.

Download a new GEDCOM. Run Notepad, Open File, change to "All Files", click open. Search for a person with notes or pictures that does not get transferred. Copy that person's GEDCOM code out as shown above and paste it here I will look at it.

Sorry this is the best I can do to help you figure it out.

Hi again kj_norway,

Thanks again for your patience and continuing efforts to help me.

As you instructed, I opened Notepad but couldn’t figure out how to change it to “all file” as you instructed. None of the drop down menus mentioned it. I also couldn’t find out how on either Help or on Google how to do it.

Exactly how and what do you do to change Notepad to change to "all file"?

But with Notepad opened, but not in “all file” I download a new Gedcom and just dragged it into note pad where I at least got some text but not the text referring to specific individuals as you showed me in an earlier message.

Copied below are the instructions you then gave me with my results and questions in parenthesis and capital letters.

You say, “Download a new GEDCOM. (I DID THAT) Run Notepad, (I DID THAT BUT NOT IN "ALL FILES". HOW DO I GET IT IN ALL FILES)Open File, (WHICH FILE? THE GEDCOM ICON WON’T OPEN. NO MATTER HOW I CLICK IT,RIGHT CLICK, LEFT CLICK, SINGLE CLICK, DOUBLE CLICK, IT JUST OPENS UP THE LIST OF DOWNLOADS AGAIN WITH THIS LAST DOWnLOADED GEDCOM HIGHLIGHTED…SO I DRAGGED THE NEW DOWNLOAD ICON INTO NOTE PAD AND I GOT MANY PAGES OF TEXT BUT NOT LOOKING LIKE THE TEXT YOU SHOWED ME EARLIER. THE LAST 4 LINES OF TEXT I HAVE ON MY NOTEPAD NOW ARE:

1 TITL Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
1 AUTH Ancestry.com
1 PUBL Ancestry.com Operations Inc
1 _APID 1,4876::0
0 TRLR

(THEN YOU CONTINUE): “ change to "All Files", (HOW?) "click open". (WHICH TO OPEN? THE GEDCOM OR THE NOTEPAD? IT SEEMS THEY ARE BOTH ALREADY OPEN) "Search for a person with notes or pictures that does not get transferred. "
(IN THE TEXT I HAVE ON NOTEPAD NOW, I CAN’T FIND ANY INDIVIDUAL NAMES EXCEPT BURIED IN OTHER COPY AND NOT IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER SO I CAN’T FIND THE ONES i NEED)

HERE ARE SOME OF THE EXAMPLES OF THE NAMES I CAN SEE:

1 TITL De La Pole.FTW
1 NOTE ABBR De La Pole.FTW Source Media Type: Other NS682273
0 @S-336354504@ SOUR
1 TITL TAFT TO RAWSON #5 2902060.FTW

(THEN YOU SAY), “Copy that person's GEDCOM code out as shown above and paste it here I will look at it." (I SURE WOULD IF I COULD. IF YOU CAN TELL ME HOW TO GET THE NOTEPAD IN “ALL FILES” MODE AND DO I DRAG THE GEDCOM INTO NOTE PAD THEN, WILL THAT GIVE ME THE NAMES IN THE FORMAT YOU SHOWED ME EARLIER AND IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER SO I CAN FIND A SPECIFIC NAME?).

I’m sorry to be so much trouble but I just don’t know what to you must be simple things. Can you give it to me step by step? Starting with my new Gedcom closed and Notepad open on the Desktop?

Thanks again for your help and patience.

Bruce

Glad to hear you got to see the GEDCOM code? :-)

What you are now looking for is an individual. So while n Notepad using the find action enter a person's last name. So, if you are looking for John Smith. Enter "Smith".

You should find a person, if you have lots of people with the surname smith you may gave to repeat until you find the exact person.

Once you find hat person. You should see what I outlined.

Hello again kj_norway

That’s great if I now have the Gedcom printing and only have to find the right page.

Not knowing where else to type, I typed in the name and birthdate of the person on the page, it’s Ebenezer Snow born 1771, at the top of the page and hit return and that didn’t get me anywhere.

Just a space.

Here's what the first few lines at the time of the Notepad look like now.

EBENEZER SNELL BORN 1771

0 HEAD
1 CHAR UTF-8
1 SOUR Ancestry.com Family Trees
2 VERS (2010.3)
2 NAME Ancestry.com Family Trees
2 CORP Ancestry.com
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
0 @P1@ INDI
1 BIRT
2 DATE 11 Jul 1928
2 PLAC ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA

If this is the page on one person, it must be my page for that's my birthday, today.

There are a lot of Snells on it, probably 25 or so before we would get to Ebenezer alphabetically. It would take a long time to got through them one by one.

Can you tell me step by step how to get to Ebenezer's page?

Bruce

All you need to do is enter the last name as I instructed you above. Then repeat that find until you come to the right person. This action and the repeat of the find will only take a few minutes. You would at most have to repeat the find 25 times but unless the person was added last you should find then sooner.

AGAIN..... ONLY ENTER THE LAST NAME. NOTHING MORE, in the find menu option.

The GEDCOM code is not set up for you to locate by anything else.

Eventually you will find a line that looks something like:

1 NAME Ebenezer/Snell/

Shortly after that you MAY find the NOTE and OBJE lines for the person. If they are not there then this may be why the GEDCOM does not transfer them from ACOM to RootsMagic.

But, none the less, please copy the person information from the line just above the NAME line down to the next time you see a 0 (zero) in column 1.
