Good Morning kj_norway,

Hooray. I think I have what you wanted to see.

I copied what was on the Gedcom from the name before Ebenezer’s to the name after his below and, together with an explanation of exactly what was missing in the RootsWeb backup tree of the Ancestry tree after using this Gedcom to update, I tried to send it to you as the answer to your last message.

I tried many times but was stopped each time by the following message:

"Invalid or Unauthorized Input Has Been Detected

There is a problem servicing your request—it contains invalid or unauthorized data. The details of the problem have been automatically logged to our servers.

If you feel that you have reached this page in error, use your browser's Back button to identify the page and data that caused the problem. Then re-enter the information.."

So, is it possible to send me your email address so I can send you this information via email?

My email address is pusch@comcast.net and perhaps you can email me there.

I hope to hear from you.

Bruce

This error indicates to me that the GEDCOM code probably has some HTML imbedded in it. This forum will not allow you to include HTML as text. HTML code maybe how ACOM coding the location of pictures in its GEDCOM files.

Do you know how to use the "Snipping Tool" in Windows? It can be found under "Accessories" on the Windows Menu.

If you do you can make a picture snapshot of the code and attach it here. This way others can learn from what is being done, rather than asking again later.

So.... Here is an example of what a Person in GEDCOM looks like as downloaded from ACOM.

Please note that 2 things:

1) The OBJE tag and FILE,FORM, TITL subtags. This is an old style of recording a picture, does RootsWeb support this style? You need to ask them this.

2) The NOTE tag and the CONT subtag. This is an old style of recording a NOTE, does RootsWeb support this style? You need to ask them this.

Also, I am not sure if RootsWeb would support an HTML link in the FILE subtag. You must also ask them this.

Hi,

Very good to hear from you again.

I hope it all comes through and, as I explain in the seven pictures they each include a few lines above and below my target which was Ebeneser and I did the same with the individual picture so they overlap.

I first tried to attach a Word Document with Screen Shots on it, I got the Touble Message "Only files with recognized GEDCOM or photo file extensions may be entered. Valid photo file extensions are: .BMP, .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG, .PCX, .PNG, .TIF, .TIFF and .WMF. The valid GEDCOM file extension is .GED"

Which I don't understand because it's a Word document but I then I attached the Snipping tool shots and they seemed to make it.

If this doesn't do it, maybe you can tell me what else I have to do to get them to you.

I hope you can see enough to tell me what I would have to change in this code to make notes and even pictures travel and if I would have to do that for each note and each picture every time I updated a backup tree.

Thanks again for your patience and continuing efforts to help me.

Bruce,

Did you read my last entry? See my snippet picture? These are the questions you need to find answers to from RootsWeb.

Hi again,

I answered your last message and attached 6 snippet pictures but pictures numbered 4 and 6 didn't go through so I've attached those two again.

I've also tried to forward this same information with a screen shot and with a Word document but was stopped by trouble messages.

If I am either stopped again this time or the two screen shots still don't get through, please email me at pusch@comcast.net and I'll send it to you, in one instead of 6 pieces, via email.

Thanks again for you patience and continued efforts to help me.

Bruce

Bruce,

So when you asked RootsWeb about the acceptance of the old format for OBJE and NOTE tags, what did they say?

What did RootsWeb say when you asked them about using an HTML link to ACOM for a picture file location?

Update:
Specifically, the picture/OBJE code is encircled by green, and the NOTE code is encircled by red

Hello again kj_norway .

Thank you for your continued patience and efforts to help me but I’m afraid I am really confused now.

My last message to you this morning forwarded the two snippets again that had not traveled with the 6 snippets I sent you in the message before that . My six snippets showed the code for an Ebenezer Snell plus a few of the code line that preceded and came after his code.

Now in you answer, you attach a snippet of your own for a different person. My six code snippets were for Ebenezer Snell and your snippet for someone named Heri from Costa Rica and ask me how RootsWeb answered questions I have yet to ask them.

I have copied what you say in this last email and have entered my questions and comments in parenthesis a so you can .

You say:

So when you asked RootsWeb about the acceptance of the old format for OBJE and NOTE tags, what did they say? (I haven’t asked them that for I’m not sure what you mean here and I think the RootsWeb techs will need more information when I ask them. Are you referring to lines on your Costa Rica snippet? If so, wouldn’t it be better to use one, or if necessary all six, of my snippets that are from the actual transfer we would be asking them about? What do you mean when you refer to their acceptance of old format for OBIE and NOTE tags? Do you mean why did that information transfer but the actual body of the Note did not? I asked RootsWeb that before and they didn’t know and finally suggested I post this problem on their Message Board where I fortunately was answered by you.)

You continue:

What did RootsWeb say when you asked them about using an HTML link to ACOM for a picture file location? (Here again, RootsWeb had no answers except for the one RootsWeb engineer I told you about in my message Posted: 8 Jul 2015 . The RootsWeb engineer whom I can no longer reach and who did make a anew RootsWeb backup tree of my old RootsWeb tree and gave me instructions on how to do it myself which unfortunately do not work for me and even if the did, now after working six months on the Ancestry tree, I need to backup from Ancestry to RootsWeb not RootsWeb to RootsWeb.)

If you can give me a sample like the Costa Rica one based on my snippets of the actual Ancestry tree to RootsWeb tree code and then word your questions for RootsWeb in such a way that I understand them and hopefully they will too, I sure will move fast to ask them.

Thanks again for all your patience and attempts to help.

Bruce

Your snippets are not complete. This is why I supplied my own from a test subject that I create because you could not send a picture of what I want to see.

If you look at my snippet it is roughly the same as yours. Different data but similar code structure. The structure are the OBJE and NOTE structures I highlighted.

The point of this is to get you to see and understand what you are trying to do so you can recreate over and over the transfer of your data. This is because ACOM and RootsWeb are not talking to each other you must be able to translate.

You should create a snippet from your GEDCOM that represents the same data that I have highlighted and contact RootsWeb saying:

"This is the GEDCOM code that ACOM created for me. It does not load into RootsWeb correctly. Can you tell me why? The code structures are valid GEDCOM do you support the GEDCOM highlighted here? Do you support picture references that are URLs to other sites?"

Give them the GEDCOM code you highlighted, then show them how the code is not added correctly to their system. If they don't support the CODE structure, then you will either have to change the structure, a very hard job, or understand that it will not work. If they don't support picture references that are URLs then you will probably need to find a different way to load the pictures to RootsWeb.

Hello again kj_norway ,

Thanks again for your patience and attempts to help me.

I will copy your answer below and again insert my comment and questions in parenthesis.

You say:

Your snippets are not complete. (The closest I have to your snippet is all of my snippet #3 and the top three lines of snippet 4) This is why I supplied my own from a test subject that I create because you could not send a picture of what I want to see. (You have everything I got on Ebenezer Snell when I followed your snippet/Notepad directions).

You continue:

If you look at my snippet it is roughly the same as yours. Different data but similar code structure. The structure are the OBJE and NOTE structures I highlighted. (What is the meaning of using Green to outline the top four lines and red to outline the bottom two? You also skip two lines in between the green and red boxes. If the different colors and skipping the lines have meaning, what is that meaning? What lines on my snippet #3 and the top three lines of snippet 4 would you outline in green or red or skip? I want to refer to a specific person and instance the RootsWeb tech can see and check on the two trees for himself).

You continue:

The point of this is to get you to see and understand what you are trying to do so you can recreate over and over the transfer of your data. (My snippets 3 and 4 show what I have now, can you tell me how those two snippets would have to be changed to make the note travel just like the title did? The picture addresses travel too and you can click on the links to see the pictures, How do we get the pictures to be already open on the RootsWeb backup tree? What exact code or change in code would it take?) This is because ACOM and RootsWeb are not talking to each other you must be able to translate. (I’m willing to do that but how? This brings up another point, lets say you were able to tell me exactly how to change the present code I get as shown on snippets 3 and 4 and get the Ancestry tree Gedcom to then show the notes and pictures on the RootsWeb tree backup, would I have to go through this whole process every time I updated? Change the code on every new Gedcom for every note and picture on my 182,000 entry tree? The old RootsWeb tree’s notes, but not it’s pictures, somehow cane up on the new RootsWeb tree when it was created, from the old RootsWeb tree last December and those old notes have stayed up on the RootsWeb backup tree but in subsequent updates with Gedcoms now from the Ancestry, not the RootsWeb tree, the notes don’t travel but the note titles do. If I were to want the notes added to the Ancestry tree since December to appear, I guess I could change the code if you, or RootsWeb? could show me how but would this have to happen every time I updated? How would I even find the location of all the notes we’ve added since December? I guess the question is, even if I get the answer can that answer be practically used?) .

You continue.

You should create a snippet from your GEDCOM that represents the same data that I have highlighted (this is again where I need your help. I can see differences but I don’t understand the meaning of the red and green boxes or the skipped lines. Can you just change the few lines on snippets 3 and 4 that would do the job, assuming the job is even worth doing if it turns out I would have to do it again with every update) and contact RootsWeb saying:

This is the GEDCOM code that ACOM created for me. It does not load into RootsWeb correctly. Can you tell me why? The code structures are valid GEDCOM do you support the GEDCOM highlighted here? Do you support picture references that are URLs to other sites?" (I will certainly go back to RootsWeb once I understand first, if the code correction job will last through updates and I understand what you mean by the pucture/URL reference).

You continue:

Give them the GEDCOM code you (Right now I don’t know how to properly change the code) highlighted, then show them how the code is not added correctly to their system. If they don't support the CODE structure, then you will either have to change the structure, a very hard job, or understand that it will not work. If they don't support picture references that are URLs then you will probably need to find a different way to load the pictures to RootsWeb. (I guess the basic question is if I learn how, do I do it once or with every update? I have hundreds of pictures and probably thousands of notes. Changing the code on all this once would be a very big jog. Doing it every time I update, would leave me no time for searching.)

If you know the answer to whether changing the code is a permanent or temporary fix, that may determine the need to go further. Or, if you know of a site, other than RootsWeb, that would display an Ancestry Gedcom showing all that is on the Ancestry tree or, as you suggested early, if I displayed a backup tree on my own could I update that showing notes and pictures after I had corrected the codes once?

Once again I thank you for your patience and help. We sure seem a lot closer to the final answers now.
