Family Tree Maker Mac 3 App

Hi

Previously I have used Family Tree Maker for my pc and have the Ancestry app for my iPad but I was wondering about the differences between the FTM Mac 3 App for £29.99 to download for my MacBook or the program version FTM for Mac V3 for £59.99.......is the full software worth the additional cost? Is the App for the MacBook any better than the existing iPad version?

Can anyone throw some light on the pros and cons of both?

Thanks
Geoff

>>FTM Mac 3 App for £29.99 to download for my MacBook or the program version FTM for Mac V3 for £59.99<<

Same application, price difference appears to be one includes Ancestry subscription (6 months?) and one doesn't.

You can port your FTM (PC) data into the The FTM Mac 3 application, best if from FTM2014.

Ancestry runs deals on their FTM applications often. Call customer support and ask them for a deal on FTM Mac 3, since you're switching platforms.

When you say App, I'm assuming you mean the version of FTM 3 that comes from the app store compared to the version you download from the website. Is this correct?

The apps for your ipad or iphone are just for ancestry. They aren't related to FTM except if you change your online tree via the app, you will need to do a sync in FTM (if you have your trees synced).

From reading the message boards, the version you download from the website (NOT the app store) is better because you get the updates faster. If there's an update to FTM 3, the app store version has been taking a few weeks longer to get the updates.

The other nice thing about the 6 month membership, is, if you already subscribe, you can call customer service and just have the 6 months added to your account.

Also, you qualify for the upgrade pricing since you have had another version of FTM, so according to what I can find, you get the non-app store version for about 30% cheaper.

Thanks.....I haven't downloaded anything yet as was just checking what gave me the most for my money I guess and which was easier to use and with what features. I have previously used FTM 2009 for my laptop. This was good but one of the biggest drawbacks I found was when I downloaded my online tree from Ancestry.co.uk to the software, whilst the events came across and the source citation, the actual source itself didn't so I couldn't click on the tree member and see the attachments! I now have a MacBook and came across the FTM Mac 3 App in the Apple Store whilst browsing. Unfortunately it had very few reviews so clicked through the link to the Ancestry website and there I saw the FTM for Mac V3 at the higher price.

The other contributor to this thread said the difference appeared to be the 6 month subscription to the website which isn't that big a deal for me, just wanted to know the strengths of each or if indeed they are the same. I must admit the iPad app is good but would like to be able to generate reports and tree diagrams if you understand.

Thanks for the help

The "mobile" (iPad, iPhone, Android) app(s) are the a watered-down version of the FREE Ancestry.com on-line member tree program. These "apps" are interactive in real-time with the mother-ship, the ACOM member tree program.

FTM and the ACOM member tree program are different animals.

FTM (PC or Mac) is a stand alone desk-top genealogy application, and are ACOM products. The current versions of both platforms are able to go "on-line", they have a built-in browser which enables you to search ACOM record collections (providing you've subscribed to do so), among other things. A database/tree in FTM can sync and share *some* data with the same named counterpart in the ACOM on-line member on-line tree application.

I'm pretty certain FTM 2009 did not have treesync capability.

FTM (PC or Mac) is a full blown genealogy application and has many more bells and whistles (like running reports) than the ACOM on-line member tree program. One you pay for, one is free.

Again, call ACOM and see what they'll offer, explain that you're a long-time user of FTM and are changing platforms, (PC to Mac).

I highly recommend you create a small test tree (load with citations and media) to mess around with. This help you to learn the functions of how all these apps function and work together, without the fear of messing up your data. There is a steep learning curve at the onset.
