MEDIA ITEMS WON'T COPY TO FTM FOR MAC

Hi All,
Am suddenly having a problem with "copying media folder to this tree and link to it here" as the drop down box with this option is no longer appearing. I suspect what may have happened is that I have inadvertently clicked on the "Link to this file where it is without copying it" (therefore my desktop) and then have accidentally clicked on the "Always use this selection without prompting me" box. How can I uncheck this box - seems impossible when the drop down box no longer appears. I can't imagine why I would do this though - perhaps something weird happened after the many crashes I've experienced! Am using FTM 2010 for Mac. Media items are being saved to FTM media but FTM can't open them as they are saved to my desktop, so I have to do a manual search. I just want my new added media safely stored within FTM with my old media just like before. Have phoned Ancestry but they don't have an answer. A consultant told me a report has been written and I'll here back in a few days. Very frustrating. Has anyone experienced this problem before or has any ideas how to fix?

"Am using FTM 2010". What OS are you operating on?

You really should upgrade, the software you're using is no longer supported and was pretty buggy. The newest version is light years ahead in function and stability.

The version of FTMM you're using is not supported vis-a-vis Yosemite. This means the software is not being tweaked (patches, etc) to keep up with computer OS. It's baffling (well, not really, ACOM is hopelessly Mac unfriendly) ACOM customer service didn't tell you that.

You're likely to encounter more issues as time goes by. I suggest you call ACOM and express you want to upgrade to the newest version and would like the best deal possible, (my last upgrade was $20). The new version is the more stable than all previous versions and optimized for Yosemite.

FTM 2010 for Mac doesn't exist. I assume you mean FTM 2 for Mac? With the program open, in the upper left corner, does it say "Family Tree Maker 3" or "Family Tree Maker 2" ?

Either way, the fix is the same.

With the program open, click on Family Tree Maker 2 or Family Tree Maker 3 in the menu bar.
Click "Preferences"
Click "Warnings" from the top 3 menu options.
There is an area that says "Copy Media Files to Media Folder" you want to change this setting. If you want the drop down to show up again, change it to "Prompt me"

"FTM 2010 for Mac doesn't exist. I assume you mean FTM 2 for Mac?"

Sheesh, FTM for Mac was (re) introduced (after a 10+ year hiatus) in 2010, I've personally referred to it as FTMM2010 in posts after the 2nd version was released.

I'm pretty sure the OP is referring to the "original" version, released in 2010.

5 year old software is vintage in this day and age. Many PC to Mac converts don't understand software needs to keep pace with the OS. This person is running the latest OS, but as I stated above, FTMM2010 is NO LONGER SUPPORTED.

I was just trying to clarify which FTM Mac OP was using for those of us who haven't followed the software for 10+ years.

Even though it isn't supported doesn't mean we can't try and help OP figure out their issue, either. If an older version of FTM is still working for OP, even if it isn't supported, who cares? I still think their issue can be resolved via my earlier post.

Thank you so, so much.....yes, my issue has been resolved, thanks to you!. Followed your instructions and everything working just like it used to! Just to let everyone know, top left hand screen simply says "Family Tree Maker" and it is the original 2010 version. After reading your replies, will definitely upgrade...like I said, just sick of all the crashes! Ancestry sent their report back to me, wasn't sure how to help and asked to send a screen shot of the problem. A bit hard when the drop down box wasn't there... what would I have taken a screen shot of?? Also sent me the "Fix broken media links in Family Tree Maker for Mac", but of course that wasn't going to fix my problem. It was one of their phone consultants who advised me to post a message here and am so glad I did....I now know this will be my first port of call in the future. Thank you to you all for taking the time to reply and help me with my dilemma .
