Thank you to everybody who answered my question about FrontPage.
If anyone has the time would they look at my website and let me know if I should change anything.
I especially liked the advice Keep it short and simple but is my site to short and simple? It is just that I have seen so many sites that are so hard to navigate and the graphics are awful, they add everything they can to their site.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jkpillars/genealogy...
Re: FrontPage 2000 - Can I do it?

I used FrontPage 2000 (I still use MS Office 2000) back in 1999 when I first uploaded my webpage to Rootsweb's FreePages. The only thing it doesn't use is FP extensions, but you don't need them anyway unless you're using a database on your site. I switched to Macromedia (now Adobe) Dreamweaver because I found it easier to use and doesn't add garbage to your HTML pages like FP does.

This is my site at Rootsweb if interested. I am currently using free templates that you can probably use in FP. The link to the templates is at the bottom of my page.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wboswell/i...

I am looking for someone who has FrontPage who can answer some questions for me. I don't need any indepth help so it won't take a lot of time. But I don't get to the boards very often. Would they email me at famlyfndr@coslink.net
Thank you.

Dear Jean,
Repent for ye have sinned by copying your data to a CD complete with any virus in all likelihood, and scan your CD with an antivirus before using the data.
And ye shall be saved a lot of formating bother by publishing your site back from the server to your machine assuming that the server is not infected as well.
Sincerely,
Mr. David Oltmann

Your problem in part is caused by WordArt as Alan on the FP list pointed out. Instead of using WordArt take a screenshot of the graphic you create and save it as an image file then insert it as a graphic and create the link to it per my earlier instructions. Or a simple text link would be a better idea.

pat

I will work on it later today and try and help you get it straightened out. You are getting some code within your page that I believe is caused by pasting info from another ms program into FP.
How are you creating the code for the BMD map or graphic that you are inserting?
Are the files/graphics for that part of your page within the current web?
Once you have created your page/pages, how are you publishing them to your server space?

pat
My url is http://www.omninet.net.au/~gypsy
==
Teri,

When I saw your page yesterday or day before, it loaded and the links worked fine on that page with the brick background (by the way, it loads SLOW-- how big is the bricks image??).

Now the graphics have no links and even your email is 'broken'. The bricks image works. In your VIEW SOURCE, you have NO links to the rest of the places and you do not have a link to an email address.

You can re-link in Frontpage or by inserting each manually. The basic format for images is <.....img border="0" src="toy.jpg" ALT="This is a Toy Image" width="150" height="157"> and you can change numbers for border, width, and height (I am not an expert on those-- I let Fp make my links.

If you get C / path links, you can manually remove (delete) all of that down to either the file name or ../subfolder/filename
If it needs more "switches (../) in front, experiment. Add one set ../images/toy.jpg If that is not right, try adding 2 sets ../../images/toy.jpg If the image is in the same folder as your page, it is just toy.jpg with no dots or slashes or subfolder/

I honestly can't say what you did to lose the links unless you deleted the old (working) page and copied back incomplete coding.

Did you try Control+K in Frontpage to create the links?

Judy

G'day Pat

Can I pick your brains again please?

I've deleted the page I had online & made a new one following the instructions you sent me on the web page of yours

I completely remade the index.htm page from scratch, uploaded it, it tooks AGES to load but finally it showed completely in IE7 but in Firefox the text that I made in WordArt wouldn't load - do you know how I can fix that?

My next BIG problem comes when I try to add a web page. Whatever I'm doing, it will not make a second or subsequent one that will show online

I made a page, called it register.htm, put all the graphics & text on it, saving it first as you'd said & saving it regularly making sure that each new graphic showed on the save but it will not show online no matter how long I leave it to load plus then the index.htm wont show properly either

Plus the WordArt graphic then wont show after I've hyperlinked it to another page - it just points to my hdd

PLEASE can you tell me how to add more pages after index.htm to my web pages - I want 5 pages altogether all linked by hyperlinks from one to another

I'm sorry to keep hassling you but this is all part of the FreeBMD Project syndicate that I run & I want the info online for ppl to join up

I did have all these pages online made with Publisher years ago but they needed updating badly. When I tried to remake them, I couldn't get them to go right in Publisher so I thought I'd try FrontPage 2002 that was newer than my old Publisher

Hooroo
Teri

Yoor page is still pointing to your image file on your hard drive rather than just the folder.
Are you creating the site in fp or pasting content from another ms program?
Are your images actually located in a folder that is part of the website you are working on?
I don't have fp 2002 on my laptop so will check it out later today on the desktop but not sure how you are getting part of the code that is being inserted.
The top and bottom images are pointing the the image file correctly. The middle one is not. It has a totally different code which appears to be an image map. How are you inserting that image?

pat

G'day All

Firstly, thanks to everyone trying to help me with FrontPage 2002 when I couldn't get my pages to show up online

Judy gave me a clue when she advised me to get FrontPage Cleaner - I couldn't find it but, I decided to do it manually - I deleted all FrontPage temp files, started from scratch, did one page as Pat had said to do (I read all the tutorials, Pat) & it worked!

I've since done exactly the same thing with the other pages (5) & put them online

My connection is soooooo slow (28.8 if I'm LUCKY!) so I'm having troubles seeing it still but I feel more confident that I'm now on the right track

I'll try to get someone with a faster connection to try them out for me & see if they work - if they don't, I'll delete all the temp files again & start again

I used FrontPage 2002 years ago & didn't have these problems so I don't understand why its happening now

So thank you all once again - if I can't get them to work, maybe I'll come back & see if any of you can help me further if that's ok

Hooroo
Teri

The top of the page has a screen-shot of exactly what you will see when you open the program. It looks very basic, but it really helps if Fp is having troubles.

I see your "index.page" with IE6, by the way. You're getting there! Yay!

Judy

Your page displays in Firefox but the images do not show. That is because your code is pointing to pages on your hard drive.

I'm not sure how many pages are part of this site but my suggestion would be to create a new web in FrontPage. Redo your index page with the images you want to be part of it. Try to publish just that much of the site and see if it works. If so then copy you other pages. SAVE THE PAGE BEFORE YOU START INSERTING IMAGES and double check the code and make sure the source points to a folder that is part of your new web and not to My Documents folder. Make sure you do not use spaces in your folder names for your website or your files for that matter. And using all lowercase letters will also make it easier.

You can also refer to the resource page for the FrontPage at Rootsweb list which is located here
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/frontpa...

and there are more FrontPage Resources/Tutorials here
http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/tutorials.htm
and here
http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/resources.htm

pat

g'day Ron

I forgot to add sorry that by default another folder is made called index_files - in there is one file called image001.gif that will not open & filelist.xml

Then there's another folder in index_files called _vti_cnf In that folder is 3 file, image001.gif (again wont open), filelist.xml & .fp_folder_info The last file will not upload through ftp

I dont know if that helps or muddies the waters! ;)

Hooroo
Teri

Teri,

What's the URL of your website?

There is a little program called Frontpage Cleaner on the Internet that Pat G (on this list) suggested I get. It's free. It cleans out the "hidden" temp files inside frontpage (no, I guess the general cleanup by MS Windows for temp files does not clean up inside Frontpage-- makes sense I guess).

I have used Frontpage Cleaner when Frontpage would not do a "save as" command on new pages. After I used the little program, Frontpage works fine. The temp pages are moved to the Recycle Bin so you can see what has been deleted (I'm so comfortable with the "Cleaner" program that I don't even check the recycle bin anymore.)

So you could try the Cleaner Program. Then recalculate hyperlinks in Frontpage. Then try to re-upload. If there's still problems, ask for more help.

Judy

G'day
I've made my web pages in FrontPage 2002 & used FTP Explorer to upload them to my web space with my isp

I have checked & my web space at my isp is all correct & I can connect fine with my ftp application

None of my pages are seen online so obviously they're not saving properly on my hdd as html before I upload them

I got my isp to check the files I'd uploaded & all they'd say was the index.htm looked a bit "funny" but wouldn't offer any other help

I have also tried making the pages in Publisher - they show up online but only through an index page & you have to click on each page individually

With FrontPage 2002, it doesn't save any the graphics with it so I have to upload them indivually off my hdd

I just dont feel like its saving properly

I have disabled Front Page Server Extensions as I've been told that can cause problems

Can anyone help me please?
On the new website on your hard drive, delete any of the folders that are not used by the new web including themes and borders. Then recalculate hyperlinks which should put everything back in order and let fp know where things are. Make sure there are no pages you need in the private folder and then delete it if you want. FP automatically creates it when you create a new website. I recalculate hyperlinks each time before I publish my sites.

Pat

Fp2000 - question about folders that begin with underscore

Hi,

I recently created a new web using an external style sheet (thanks to Pat G). When I made my first folder/page in this web, I had copied in some old pages from another web (which used a different design). My intention was to copy the content from the old pages to the new web pages in their own new folder.

Over the last couple weeks, I've made changes and new pages for the "new" web based on the old content of those pages. (I did not just copy the content, I typed it on the new page, so nothing would get messed up on my new template.) Then I deleted the "old" pages.

The old pages had my very first attempts at webmaking. So, for example, one of those old pages used a left border. I have none of that in my new web.

Last night I was going through the broken links Reports and saw broken links in folders that begin with underscore -- but NONE of those "pages" still exist in this web (they were connected to the "old" pages I have since deleted.)
"Broken links" are in:
_borders_left
page: left.htm----OLD, not used in THIS web
page: top.htm-----OLD, not used in THIS web
_private (I think I made this _folder to store a few pages one time. It just has some OLD pages NOT in use in any web and that I don't want anymore.)
_includes (has 2 OLD "includes" that have been changed so these 2 are NOT in use in this web)

So, is it okay to delete the pages I made that got stuck in or have copies in these _folders? What rules should I follow when thinking about deleting something from one of the underscore folders?

There is also ONE item called "themes.inf" in _themes. But I've never (knowingly) applied any theme to this web. It may have copied in with one of the old page copies that I have since deleted. Should I leave this there or can I delete "themes.inf" without causing any problem?

Thanks!
Judy

Re: Lots of options for building a free website for your family tree

There are free sites and there are free sites. Some are much better than others and it depends on what you want your family history site to include. If what you want is to upload your GEDCOM file with little or no effort required to format the pages, then I recommend RootsWeb's World Connect Project.

If you want to have a site that will supplement your family tree with stories, documents and such, then you can request space at FreePages on RootsWeb. Yes you have to design the site, but there is plenty of free software you can use to do that. Check out some of the resources at Genealogy Web Creations http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/

If you are using FrontPage to design your site, then join us on the FrontPage Mailing list at Rootsweb
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/frontpa...

pat geary
Front Page List & Board Administrator

There are several options to build your own family history website. I learned the hard way not to go the route of loading software on my computer and creating it that way. There are a bunch of sites that let you do it all online in a very easy way. You don't need to download anything onto your computer or even pay in most cases if you are willing to have ads on your site. Wikipedia has a list if you look up "Free Webhosts".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_Webhosts

You didn't say which FP version you are using.
1. I would go to Format- page transition.
2. You will get a pop up window.
3. choose under event page enter
4. set the duration (15 sec or how ever much you like)
5. then from the drop down list choose either wipe left or wipe right.
50. click okay.

That is for FP 2003

If you do not have the passive ftp checked check it and see if that makes any difference. On my way out so back on later. If it is one of the other servers, let me know. ~pat

From the RootsWeb help desk http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/
2007-07-06
FTP to the WWW server (users.rootsweb.com) is again experiencing problems. We apologize for the inconvenience.

This problem has been going on for awhile. In the meantime you can use RootsWeb's file manager http://www.rootsweb.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi

Karen,

I think it would work much better for you if you just published your web to a new folder on your computer, in effect making a copy of it, and using that to upload from. You will still have your original web folder and all of it's contents, and you will get an exact duplicate of your original web that you can publish from.

Linda
in Costa Rica
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monroenys/

broken hyperlinks

Sorry everyone, but I have another problem I hope you can solve for me.

I have two sites that are census guides to the Orphanages, Poor Farms and other institutions. At the end of 2005 I was informed that cox would no longer support Microsoft Server Extensions and as a result I am no longer able to make live updates.

I am in the process of moving the sites, and I thought one quick and easy way to do this was to copy and paste the information, to a new site and republish to a different server. When I copy and paste the individual pages, they are no longer linked to the home page. I tried recalculating hyperlinks and that didn't work either.

I am hoping you can solve this problem for me without me having to manualy re-type the info.

Thanks,

Karen

You might also check and see if you can add subdomains at no extra cost with GoDaddy. I know you can with 1and1. I have family-genealogy-online.com and a subdomain blog.family-genealogy-online.com. Also the-gearys.com and cross-stitch.the-gearys.com Completely separate from each other.

pat
