"quit syncing for this reason.
I would LOVE if they put in a universal sort button for birth order. Can't understand why you'd need to have your ancestor be at the top of the list when you can see who your relative is by colored triangle/arrow on the left side of the "child's" name."
An easy solution to this problem [once a user has all their their Children sorted the way they want them] is the following:
Reprogram the system so that that the system does NOT change the sort order from the order the user left it, ie. let the user be in complete control of the order and don't allow the system to change the order.
An alternative to this is to use something akin to the ordering of "spouses" [let the user put the children in the order they want them and then not allow the system to change them and if the user later changes the order for whatever reason they choose then don't allow the system to change that order]

Re: Children listed in birth order
I know about this problem but a bigger problem is that I can't get the sort children or move person function to work. Here is how it says to do it in the help files: ---------------------------------------------------- To arrange the order of children Select one of the parents of the family.
Note: If the parent has multiple marriages, you may need to select a different spouse.
In the Family Group view, select the person you want to move, then click either the down arrow or up arrow , depending on where you want to move the person.
If you want to arrange the children by birth order, click the Arrange by Birth Order button . --------------------------------------------------------
My problem is that nothing highlights or works. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Children listed in birth order
Do you have the Blended Family Icon toggled on? It is the last one on the right. Sort to birth order is not available in Blended Family view.

Re: Children listed in birth order
I am asking this purely to satisfy my curiosity as to why blended families was introduced. Am I unusual in that in my database if someone from the US contingent (by far the largest part) remarried, then the children from the previous marriage might just as likely be 1. Placed with grandparents or other relatives. 2. Placed in orphanage 3. Because of their age never form part of the new household. 4. Split between the two parents. 5. Simply end up with a household with no apparent connection. rather than form a household as envisaged by blended families?

Re: Children listed in birth order
I do not use the "Blended Family" feature and see no need in having it, but others do.
As to your list, I do not think that any of them apply, but the fact that many have been married more than once, the step parent has become the parent more than the biological parent and some people just want that parent to be reflected as being "The" parent.

Re: Children listed in birth order
I would guess it depends one the area they lived and the amount of extended family around. In my family, most became truly blended. He had kids, she had kids and then they had kids. Many home at the same time. Of course the older ones did move on fairly soon.

Re: Children listed in birth order
Ginglish, you solved the mystery for me! I turned the blended family icon off, clicked sort by birth order, and then turned the blended family icon back on. Although my dad's half brother is older than him he shows at the bottom now, but it makes more sense to me now.
I thought the blended family option was on a family by family basis. I didn't realize it would change the setting for the whole tree and would prevent sorting. I am especially surprised it would also affect families that are not blended to begin with.
Re blended families: I like seeing all the children that grew up together beneath the parents that raised them, but I am glad we can shut it off easily for printing out the family. And that we can also turn it on or off anytime if we want to change how we are viewing a single family.
But I still wish it was a setting you could put on for specific families to whom it applies more accurately.
Thanks again. I am going to play around with it today.

Re: Children listed in birth order
A GENERAL COMMENT
To see the usefulness/capability of blended families do the following [For ease in understanding use the following simple example: Assume John Jones had two wives, Susan the first wife and Mary the second wife, and he had children by both wives and further assume you know the birthdates of everybody and the marriage dates]
1- Turn off the blended icon 2- Put John Jones and his first wife Susan on the screen and click the sort order 3- Put John Jones and his second wife Mary on the screen and click the sort order 4- Put John Jones and his first wife Susan back on the screen 5- Click the blended Icon
You should now be able to see all the children of the first wife followed by the children of the second wife and you should see little icons that indicate the children are of different spouses
In general if you do this process if you find that, for example, a child of the first wife is born after a child of the second wife it gives you a clue that something is/may be wrong
Also if you see that a child of the second wife is born before the second wife was married it gives you other possible error clues [maybe the child was really a child of the first wife]
My feeling is that the blended families is quite useful in many ways
Just one small example, it has helped me to see that I have listed a child named XXXX of the first wife, but I also listed that child XXXX as a child of the second wife [and it sends me back to do further research to find the correct answer]

Re: Children listed in birth order
Kathy, after learning more about it here on the message board I have been playing around with it. And what you said is a very good point. I was thinking of it more for the display aspect of it, but I didn't think about using it to help discover errors that a data report probably wouldn't find.
At first I thought it applied only to the couple you had currently on the tree page, but in fact if you don't shut it off it applies to all trees. I had to laugh when I left it on and saw my mother-in-law listed with her first husband, along with the two children they had together, the four he had with his 2nd wife, and the one she had with her 2nd husband.
Those little male and female figures help to identify which child belongs to which parent, but still could be confusing if left on.
I can't believe how much I learn everyday on this message board.
