Hi Mike...
I'll give it another shot....
Would this be what you are looking for:

John Doe Sr

b:
m: 07 May 1901 in Bartow, Ga, USA.
d: Bet. 1907-1910
Census: Bef. 1910

If so there is a Census Fact you could use.
Add the Census Fact & Field in your customized view in the Far right pane of the People - Family view. As this would make it easy to enter the date, say "Bef 1910"
Then when you generate your reports/Charts
Select "Census" as a fact field to be included.

I tried it and ran the Pedigree chart got the example above.

You might create a custom Fact
"US FED Census" or any other custom Fact. "Living Aprox"
"Alive"

However I not sure how or if, these custom facts exports in a GEDCOM format if you needed to import to a different software other than FTM.

P.S. If this works, would using CAL for "calculated date" also be a date entry you could use?
