Choosing the Closest Line of Descent

I see someone asked a similar question - but as they were advised to upgrade and the issue not really answered, may I ask my similar question - I am using Family Tree Maker 2009.

Family Tree Maker 2009 is insisting that Diana Spencer, the Princess of Wales, is my "23rd Cousin, 5x removed, in law".

Well, yes she is - but as her 4x great grandfather, John Spencer is also my 7x great grandfather, that is obviously a ridiculous way of putting our connection :(

How on earth do I tell Family Tree Maker to use the closest (and most logical) connection? As my family lines are pretty inbred in places, all my relationship information now is just a mess.

Any help with this would be very gratefully received

BTW - I forgot to mention that if I use the Relationship Calculator and reverse she and I, it then happily says that I am her Fifth cousin, 3x removed - but this is the only place it works it out right and I want it on the main Person page and to print out Relationship charts.

Elgyfu,

I would suggest that you use this link:

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/ask_feed...

And provide some detailed feedback to Family Tree Maker 2009.

You will probably not receive feedback from them, but the developers do read the feedback.

Good luck,

Russ
