Using FTM2009 18.0.0.35 on XP. Is it possible to change the name of a fact? I have many facts titled "Census." FTM 2008 & 2009 don't use "Census" but use "Residence" instead. I would like to change all my facts titled "Census" to "Residence."

yes this can be done

Click on a fact you want to change

Go to Edit>Manage facts

Click on Data Options

Fact Data Options
The Fact Data Options dialog box lets you search for and select for batch processing, meaning that you can process many facts at the same time. The processing includes changing fact types, swapping text from one field to another, or marking several (or hundreds) of facts as Private. Because the Fact Data Options can produce undesirable results if you are not careful, you should back up your tree before you process facts (the options is always presented to you before you the dialog box is opened).

The following table describes the options available:

Options
Description

Show facts for
Lets you select the people to display in the Fact instances list. You have two options:

All Individuals: searches every record in your tree for records that reference the current fact.

Selected individuals: opens the Filter Individuals dialog box so you can filter your tree to include a subset based on the parameters you define. That subset is then searched for those records that reference the current fact.

Check All
Selects all of the individuals in the Fact instances list.

Uncheck All
Selects none of the individuals in the Fact instances list.

Fact Instances
Displays each instance of the fact for the selected individuals. The fact details are listed in the columns. You can sort the data by clicking a column header.

You can select which facts to manage by marking or unmarking the check boxes next to the names.

Change select facts to this fact type
Changes the data in the selected facts from the current fact type to the fact type that you designate in the drop-down list.

Move data in the select facts
You can use one of the options to move data from one field to another:

From place to description: Moves the text in the Place field to the Description field in each fact you have selected. If there is already text in the Description field, the Place text is added after the existing Description text and the two are separated by a slash ( / ).

From description to place: Moves the text in the Description field to the Place field in each fact you have selected. If there is already text in the Place field, the Description text is added after the existing Place text and the two are separated by a slash ( / ).

Swap place and description: The text in the Place field is moved to the Description field and the text in the Description field is moved to the Place field in each fact you have selected.

Mark the selected facts as
Marks the selected facts as either Private or not Private.

Incidentally, the current version for FTM 2009 is 18.00.307

I'm glad you added that as I was on 305 and as I don't run as Administrator it didn't tell me about the update (why it can't tell me there is one there even if I can't install it is another question...). I see one of the fixes is for problems merging images from ancestry.com and I'm hoping that might fix the problem I have where merging images from ancestry.co.uk has become hit and miss.

Thanks,

Graham

Graham,

Are you saying that you can always do a Web Merge from Ancestry.com but are having a problem with Ancestry.co.uk?

If so, please provide some details.

Russ

But it will tell you if you set your Options to automatically search for updates when connected.

Thanks for your detailed reply. It will take some time to convert all the "Census" fact labels to "Residence" fact labels. I don't want to convert in mass, prefer to verify changes in small lots.

jbunn,

That is what I have done. Also gives me a chance to make sure that I documented everyone and have a copy of the Census Record.

Good Luck,

Russ

Not at all. I always use ancestry.co.uk, though I don't think there is much of a difference between that and ancestry.com as far as FTM is concerned.

There is another thread where users talked at length about apparently successful web merges that supposedly included media resulting in sources with no attached images. I occasionally used to come across sources with missing images but they were few and far between, suggesting that perhaps one in a few hundred had failed to download without my noticing but on the whole I couldn't relate to the experiences the user(s) were having.

However after a period of little activity I've been more active with FTM/Ancestry this week and I would say that at least 25% of my web merges have ended up without attached images, even though they all reported success.

So I was merely expressing a hope that a fix related to images in web merges might turn out to cure my problem.

I run FTM on XP without administrator privileges. I have it set to automatically check for updates. It didn't tell me there was a new update. When I do Help | Check For Update... it tells me I have to be an administrator to get updates.

When I ran FTM as administrator I immediately got offered the update.

I don't have a problem with needing to be an administrator to install the updates. I do have a problem with needing to be an administrator to be told about the updates.

G.,

Since User Account settings have been around, Family Tree Maker requires that we use the Run As Administrator feature active.

I would suggest that you use this link:

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/ask_feed...

And provide some detailed feedback to Family Tree Maker 2009.

You will probably not receive feedback from them, but the developers do read the feedback.

Good luck,

Russ
