FTM 2009 import from Legacy

I just got my copy of 2009. I had been using V16, but when 2008 was released I switched to Legacy. I decided to give 2009 a good try, so I imported as a new file my Legacy file, the import seemed to go well, but I noticed that all the names in the Personal Information and the Marriage infomation was all doubled up, with the top one being marked preferred. All the Individual facts were fine.
On the MEDIA, all the pictures were doubled trippled or more, and since FTM keeps the actual pictures in the file not just a location I am sure it took up more room.

I decided to go a round about route and see what would happen. I exported a GEDcom to V16 and imported into V16, worked fine, then I imported into 2009 from V16 and everything appears to be fine, execpt all the media is gone, probably due to it not being carried in the gedcom.

I am going to try out 2009 and see what I think.

Jeffrey,

Yes, a GEDCOM will remove Images.

Where are you looking when you say "Personal Information". Is that the Index? (LH Panel).

THe names showed up on the "Individual & shared Facts" page under the Person button, it showed Sex as male and then the name twice, once preferred and once not, then down in the "shared facts with Emma Peters" it showed the line Marriage twice.

When I do the import from Legacy to V16 then to 2009 it works fine.

Jeff,

Sounds like you had multiple name FACTs in Legacy. Family Tree Maker has that feature as well.

Did you check the facts equivalent in Legacy?

Do you see multiple Name FACTS in Version 16 when you went from Legacy to Version 16?

Nope no dups in Legacy. Also it is about 2/3's of the name and marriage facts that duplicate.

The import into V16 works fine, no dups.

It only happens when I import directly from Legacy to 2009.

I am still trying to decide which program, Legacy, V16 or 2009 I like the best.

Jeff,

How large is that file?

When you say "dups" in 2009, are you saying that the Name is listed several times in the Index? (F2)(in the LH Panel)

In Legacy, do you have the ability to have multiple Names for an individual?

There are 2517 individuals in the file. The index is fine.

In Legacy the only way you can have more than one name is to put it in as an Alternate Name in the facts.

It is a weird error as it is not consistent across every person, about 1/3 worked fine, but when a name is duplicated so is the marriage fact.

I wonder if there is a link to FTM support, I would be happy to send them the actual family files, both for Legacy and 2009 and let them try it.

I went to open 2009 again, I had closed it by clicking on the x in the upper right and it backed up the file.
Now I get a warning, FTM 2009 was not properly closed the last time it was used, YOu may need to compact your last opened file to resolve any issues. To Compact the file choose Compact file from the tools menu.

Of course FTM won't open at all now and when I click ok to the message above Vista gives an error and closes the program. I then ran it as administrator, two extra steps and it opens ok.

I think what I will do is to put new facts into Legacy, move them to V16 and from there to 2009 while I learn 2009.

Jeff,

Again, What is the FILE Size?

Are you saying that you have NO Alternate Name in FACTs in Legacy?

Yes, there is a link on the Help, Online Help Center.

Jeff,

Please reboot your PC and give it a try again.

There is something else going on here.

Do you have Norton on your PC?

I have McAfee.
I will reboot and see what happens.

In V16 you can only import from a gedcom or a FTM file. I used the same gedcom on both V16 and 2009 and v16 worked fine, 2009 doubled some names.
My file size is 8.47 megabytes.

As I say if I pull the gedcom into V16 first and then use 2009 to pull it from V16 the file is fine.

I am a computer programmer and this interests me, I am going to play with it some more. I will try several different files etc.

Jeff,

I am still looking for the answer about Alternate Names in Legacy. Do any of the duplicates in 2009 have Alternate Names in Legacy?

AND, are you seeing the Duplicate NAMES in the Index (F2) Screen on the Left side of the People / Family screen in 2009.

No, none of the names on the left are dups and none have alternate names in Legacy.
Marriages are sometimes shown twice even when there are no facts in Legacy other than the marriage date.

I have noticed something interesting, the import from V16 shows one name and the sex in the top box (Personal Information) in the Idividual and shared facts, but the import from 2009 shows a married name for every married woman in the file (I know in legacy as part of the marriage box, they show the spouses married names as sometimes a man can take a womans name (if she is royalty or something) and then often, not always two names under that so for example a person in my tree shows as

Name Estella Alberta Schleicher
Name Estella Alberta Wehr
Name Estella Alberta Wehr
Sex Female

In Legacy her name is only there once with no alternate spellings.

Also I did check people with alternate spellings in Legacy, some didn't come over as facts to 2009

FURTHER CHECKING REVEALED

Francis Krumm in Legacy his name is there, and there is an alternate spelling.
The alternate speling shows in 2009

Here is what I see

Name Francis (Franz) Krumm
Name Francis (Franz) Krumm
Sex Male

Idividual Facts

Alternate Spell Franz Crum
Birth Abt 1761 Heidelberg Twp
Military Service 1782 Rev War
Death 10 May 1838 West Penn Twp

Jeff,

Please email me your Legacy file. But use this email address

hrworth@gmail.com

I do not monitor that email address as I only use it for this type of work. I will watch for your file.

Thank you,

Russ

Will do.

If I had stuck with V16 when 08 came out this wouldn't be an issue, but I started using Legacy. The thing is if this is a Legacy issue and or a Vista issue and not a "my pc" issue then other could have the same problem.

The import via gedcom from Legacy works fine, no duplication.

It is when I use the 2009 option to import directly from Legacy.

The legacy files are on their way to you.

Jeff,

I was able to duplicate this problem. I focused on Padelskas, Anthony Andrew.

Legacy 7 to Version 16 via GEDCOM file, he was listed one time, with two citations

Legacy 7 to Version 2009 via the SAME GEDCOM file, he was listed once, with two Source-Citations

Legacy 7 directly to Version 2009. The Name is listed twice on the People, Person screen and NO Citations on either name.

The key lies, I think it the 929 Errors on the Import directly from Legacy to 2009. There are many, many errors in the GEDCOM file. Version 16 generated a long .LST file.

My suggestion is to Please post your detailed concerns on the Board Information Page, on the FTM's feedback form:

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/ask_feed...

You should be able to attach your Legacy file like what you sent to me.

I'm in the same situation where I converted to Legacy out of frustration with the direction TGN was taking Family Tree Maker. TGN really didn't pay attention to the Legacy import. For example, if you have research notes in Legacy, they import as personal notes in FTM 2009 with a direct Legacy import. The picture stuff gets messed up too. I get a different number of individuals with it too.

With importing a Legacy created Gedcom file, it seems better but I would need to do some reconciliation and checking because the "different surname" count is not the same. It could be a different counting process but quite frankly, I trust Legacy more than FTM. While I like some of the things about Family Tree Maker better than Legacy, there are still a lot of pluses for Legacy. FTM2009 doesn't have the old FTM16 custom report feature where you can copy directly to a spreadsheet (1 column per item). Legacy does. FTM2009 does not have a book feature. Legacy does and you can copy it to Word and retain the bookmarks.

While I'll play around with Family Tree Maker 2009 to see what gets changed, I will convert back only if and when I'm sure I can import either a Gedcom or direct from Legacy without problems...AND...they get their act together and give us back some of the capabilities such as those mentioned above.

I loved V16 and still do, I also love Legacy.

I bought and tried the Gold version of Master Genealogist as well as Rootsweb.

I think the two best programs are V16 and Legacy, Coke and Pepsi sort of. There are things I like about both. I am going to try to use both althought it is alot more work.

I will post my concerns to the link above.
