I personally would use the laptop as my main computer for my genealogical research. It can go to the library, to the cemetery, and to the large recliner that sits in my living room. It is difficult to operate the desktop from the recliner. The recliner is a very comfortable chair, and I have a lot of time to do genealogical research and work on my database, as it seem to day there are more commercials that content on the TV.

PS: I have multiple backs up to the files on my laptop. I sync the laptop hard drive with the one on the Desktop. I backup the desktop to a terabyte external drive. and back the laptop to another 125 megabyte external drive that I keep in my laptop case.
