I recently had a crash and had to replace my hard disk. Naturally, I didn't get my ancestry tree unlinked and now I'm unable to link it after reinstalling FTM 2012. Is there a solution to this problem?

For FTM 2012 the backup file that you restored (I hope you did this) doesn't include the sync control files. This was a horrendous error that was fixed in 2014 where the sync control files were backed up as well.
The FTM 2012 sync control files are hidden in the AppData folder and unless you can get at them then the only thing you can do is to download your Ancestry tree into FTM as a new tree and install 2014 to make sure this doesn't happen again.

You need to unlink your tree from the web site. Click on the Tree Pages drop down at the top left, select Tree Settings. In the settings page click on Unlink Tree near the bottom of the right column. You can then download and link your tree again.
