FTM 2010, 2012 or 2014(?)?

Classification: Query
My computer crashed with my FTM 2o12 info (Which I have seemed to misplace the software around my house somewhere. I did find my FTM 2o10 but haven't reinstalled just yet) Here's my problem - Since I could not find my 2012 software, I tried to upload my "recovered" (150 $'s later) FTM 2012 files to Ancestry.com as a new tree.
Bypassing any FTM software at the moment.
Ancestry.com wouldn't/couldn't upload it saying something about not gedcom files blah, blah , blah... I'm wondering if the computer guy really did get my files off of my crashed hard drive or not. So... should I download FTM 2o10 (Will 2012 work on 2010?)and try that?
Repurchase FTM 2012 and try that? Or pass on the older versions and purchase the latest version with 6 mos. of Ancestry(which would be nice but not the deciding factor ; )
Thanks in advance!
Kelly
