does syncing to family tree maker save documents too?

does syncing to family tree maker save documents too?

I am fairly new to ancestry and have got lots of census documents attached to my tree - if i get family tree maker and sync the tree, does it save the census records and any other documents attached or do I have to save them all separately?

Also, when my subscription to ancestry runs out do I lose the ability to open the census records on the family tree maker version?

I've tried to find out using the help section but I could only see that I won't be able to open paid for items on the ancestry site tree when my subscription runs out and no information on the tree maker.

Hope someone can help :)

When you install FTM, a PDF "Companion Guide" is installed with it. If you accept the default, and you are using the Windows version, it should be in C:\Program Files\Family Tree Maker 2014\Manuals on your computer.

You have the option, when you set up the options for FTM to download citation media. Choose download to have all the census and other record images on your computer. And, yes, if you are no longer a subscriber to ancestry.com, you can still see all those records, in that case.

I guess the answer is "Yes, more or less.", more Yes for your context.

If you download a tree from ACOM to FTM, and set the option (as above), it downloads the media too. If you add media documents in FTM or ACOM, those tend to sync OK too. However, if you *delete* a media document in FTM or ACOM, the deletion isn't always reflected in the other.

This means that if you work mainly in ACOM as I do, the media folder tends to contain more documents than are in the tree. The only simple way to fix this that I've found is to delete the tree (and its media folder), and download it again from ACOM.

But if you haven't fiddled with the files in your media folder, then the census and other records will be in there, usually with names like "1851 England Census(3).jpg". You can rename them of course, but I've found that this isn't very useful, because you'll lose the names when you have to download from ACOM again.

The good news is that the census documents *are* on your PC if you're synching with ACOM.
