Installation of FTM 2014 download version

Just in case others may run into this problem, I'm sharing my experience in successfully installing the downloaded version of FTM2014 yesterday (5/25/15). I have Windows 7.

Note: you can only purchase download versions of the full and upgrade versions from the Ancestry store.

The file downloaded just fine and didn't take all that long using Chrome browser, even though IE is recommended.

However, when I tried to install from the downloaded FTM file, I got this error message more than halfway through the installation process:
Access to the path C:\Users\computername\AppData\Local\Temp\setup.exe is denied

The installation just froze up. I closed the installation folder/cancelled the installation and started working on resolving this issue.

What I ended up doing is replicating the path from the error message, locating the Temp file folder on my computer and de-selecting the Read Only default setting, then starting the installation over and it finished installing in less than 1 minute.

You should double-check that your Temp folder re-sets itself to Read Only - mine did on its own.

My antivirus was turned off during the download and installation processes and, to be on the safe side, before installing from the downloaded file (it downloads to your "Downloads folder"), I right clicked on that file and selected "Run as Administrator" and then re-initiated the installation process by left-clicking on the FTM2014 downloaded file (again, it's in your Downloads folder).

There was no "next step" as far as having to install any updates, either. The installed version is 22.0.0.1383

FTM 2014 works just fine, my only FTM 2010 tree copied, intact, into FTM 2014.

I plan to save a copy of the downloaded file to a DVD to always have on hand. I hope that's do-able.

My advice is:

1) Always buy the CD and not the download. The CD can be purchased from FTM, Amazon, or your favorite local store (like Walmart or Best Buy). This cd version may not be the latest and greatest, but you will be told if the program from the CD needs an update.

My observation is that the troubles on initial installation is from folks who download the program instead of loading it from a CD; and, more people have problems when they get a new computer, or the old hard drive crashes, or whatever. The re-installation with a CD is simple, just put the CD in the CD drive of your new computer and away you go.

2) I suggest backups be done on an external drive and/or the cloud. DVDs are fine for storing somewhere other than where the computer is.

My backup plan is
1) A backup every other day to every week to an external drive that is in the house.
2) A backup once a month to an external drive the size of an iPod is kept at a safe deposit box at my bank (with will, car title, deeds, etc)
3) A backup on Carbonite - about $60 a year. The initial load takes a while, but is not noticeable after that.

I agree with silverfox and buy the CD.
If you are NOT able to get the CD, then after downloading the install file and saved to the hard drive, burn it to a CD.

NOTE: the download may be a Compressed file and needs to be unZipped. UnZip the file to a empty folder and the burn all of the files in that folder to a CD. My download expanded to 8 different files.

Thank you for this information. The downloaded installation file is not zipped. I burned the file to a DVD (file size is 669 MB) and also copied it to a thumbdrive just to be safe. I installed it from the DVD to a laptop that had FTM2010 with my family tree file and everything's working as it should.

I opted for the upgrade option because of the lower price after checking Amazon, Walmart and Bestbuy online. I did not want to fork out that much money for a standalone program when all I needed was an upgrade, which i found on Ancesty. I gambled that I could create my own CD as backup for the installation files, and, it worked. Your response told me that this was do-able.

Your options from Ancestry are to get the program on a CD or via download. In my view, the CD is the preferable alternative to downloading the program, for the reasons I gave above. Even if you have to wait a couple of days for it to show up. You are receiving a discounted price because you are a previous customer. You still get the full program under any option.

As I stated in my original emal, the only option, now, whether purchasing the full or upgrade version, is download only. I agree with you that a CD is the better option.

So it is. I guess they have run out of inventory on-line. That's a pretty good indication that they are planning on FTM2016 this summer or fall.

There is no upgrade "version". The program is the same no matter how it is purchased. The "upgrade" you keep talking about is simply a discount to previous owners of the software.

The best alternative is still to buy the CD, either on-line (at Amazon, etc) or at Best Buy - even if it is a few dollars more - for the reasons stated above.

the version number you listed 22. 0.0.1383 also seems to only be related to the download version. The main version out their according to web site right now is 22.0.0.1345, I am hearing others who downloaded ftm 2014 having 22.0.0.1383 and they seem to be having other issues too, as for a summer rollout of 2016 I wouldn't count on it theirs been no leaks or word on a beta so not expecting right now to even see a 2016 best guess is possibly a 2017 version.

Are you able to create a source in that version or does the program crash on you?

I've had no problems and the tree syncs with the online tree I created on Ancestry so that family members could view it. I'm glad I upgraded from FTM 2010 to FTM 2014.
