I have been using Family Tree Maker since the late 1990’s so I feel I have some knowledge of how it works. During my research certain using other sites, evidence has referenced “Family Archive CD World Family Tree Vol 27 Tree 935”. I did not have that specific volume so I ordered it on eBay. When I received it and opened the mentioned tree, 0935, and it had no mention of my ancestor. Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Most of those CD's were made back in the 90's and were not much help in todays world. I think you should be able to find most of the same trees at Ancestry, but not in the same format that is on the CD.
What version of FTM are you using now?

Was this person born before 1850, or lived past 1850? Are you an ancestry database subscriber? If so, I suggest you subscribe and research the person.
Those old trees are about as reliable as the current ancestry trees - that is, NOT reliable. Many didn't have sources or any other documentation. Many of the contributors have died or left genealogy for other interests, or just not findable. I wouldn't waste anymore time looking for this old record.
Even if this person lived before 1850, you might still find some records on ancestry databases for him or her. For example, vital records for MA, VT, and CT can go back into the 1600s. There may be other types of records before 1850 in ancestry databases, although they are admittedlly a bit scant.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that this FTM disk would help in overcoming my "brick wall". This Vol 27 Tree 935 is mentioned on several sites including Wikitree. I have searched Ancestry sources but there are so many discrepancies that I find it very unreliable. It is so easy to copy information from one tree to another that the original poster is lost. I guess I'll just keep on hammering on this wall until I open a hole in it. Thanks everyone!

I think you may be mis-interpreting my response to search "ancestry databases" to searching "ancestry trees."
Ancestry databases are genealogical records, not trees; and include records, like census, birth, death, marriage, military, etc kind of records. There are a few ancestry records that are free, but the bulk are contained within the ancestry.com subscription service.
The reason I brought up 1850 is that is the first US census that used names and other information for all individuals in a house.

I understand, I have been searching Ancestry for a while. I only brought up the public trees to indicate the problem I have been having trying to find documented proof. It is as though my ancestor intentionally hid any family history. He, James Allen, is listed on many trees, but none of those trees or any of the databases on Ancestry can show proof of where he was born or married. This information might just be lost in time.

David you might try searching on Google Books - especially if you have an idea of his spouse
Try searching
Allen genealogy Allen History Allen and spouse name James Allen and your guess as to his birth date James Allen and your guess as to his birthplace
Also try The Family Search (LDS) data base/website - its free

Thanks, I'll give that a try. As I have said before, I sometimes believe that my ancestor intentionally hid from site. Maybe he owed someone some money! Wouldn't that be a hoot!!!
