Family Trees Question

I can't find an answer to this question and I hope I'm on the right board:
Can my husband and I start our own Family Trees under one account?

My husband received ancestry.com as a Christmas present. He has not started a family tree. What I want to know is if I should start a tree for myself would he be able to log into this account and start his family tree.
Thanks in advance.

Showing illegitimate children

I cannot find anywhere in the manual instructions on how to show an illegitimate child. Alice Williams married Robert Livesey and had a number of legitimate children by him. Well, fine. But three years before she married Robert she had a daughter, Ellen, father unknown. When I try to put Ellen into the tree, FTB wants to make her the daughter of Alice and Robert. That is not correct. When I try to unlink Robert, Alice is unlinked as well. What's the solution to this? Ellen was not adopted by Robert because she appears in censuses as "step-daughter" and under the name Williams, not Livesey. She was Ellen's child and only Ellen's child.

Re: Merging Family Tree entries with other Family Trees

You should export one tree as a GEDCOM file. Choose the one with the least amount of photos attached, since they have to be entered manually.
Open the other tree and then select Import GEDCOM.
Answer Yes, you want to end the current, open project.
Select Import into latest project, the two trees are (crudely) merged. Duplicates have to be removed manually, photos re-entered.

http://www.myheritageimages.com/H/storage/blogs/companyblog/...

This open source project: http://gdbi.sourceforge.net/ is said to work on a smarter match/merge function.

Identical Names Inquiry.

I found that I created two separate branches, when I created an ancestor branch for a male and his wife, and another independent branch for a female and her husband. It turned out that the two couples were actually the same one!
One way to catch this, is to always go to "name search" and see if the name is already listed. However, when adding hundreds of names...to check name duplicates would take hours for FTB to run the names with that function.
I also use Family Tree software from MyHeritage.com...as I add names, the software automatically asks whether or not the duplicate name is the same person. This prevents parallel branches from being completely separated from each other.
Is there a way to automatically check for duplicate entries in Ancestory.com-FTB?

"Merging branches"?

My family tree has gotten quite large. I have discovered that I have entered a large ancestor branch for a female ancestor, including her husband. I also entered a different large ancestor branch for a male ancestor, including his wife.
At that point I realized that the man and woman were in fact the same couple. One branch only includes the husband's ancestors and the other independent branch only includes the wife's.
Is there a way join up the two branches, with the couple as the descendant fork? I don't want to have to delete several hundred entries just to add them to the other branch.

Depending on its complexity, you may not be able to print the entire tree. You can print your ancestors, your descendants, or an "hourglass" chart. Even in hourglass mode, you won't get everyone, however. For example, you'll get your parents and kids, but you won't get your siblings or your siblings-in-law. FYI, the focus of the chart is whichever person you have selected at the time to click on the Chart button.

Step one is the add the biological father to the database as a spouse to your wife. Then attach the son to the pair of them. You should then be able to edit the son's parents to select a different additional father (you) for him and set you as the adoptive parent.
I just downloaded this software as I have been looking for a decent package that would handle same-sex marriages as I have a few in the family. However, I am trying to re-enter data as my old files from Legacy were corrupted (another reason to move as this is the third time this has happened.) I am curious how are people entering their source citations into the program. I am familiar with citing sources and have "Evidence" as a reference material. However I am trying to make sure that all the appropriate information shows on the documents, and so far, it seems rather truncated and not a proper source citation.

Thanks

And I have.

My main issue is that my sources are all messed up for the most part and I am wondering if there is anyway to export the family tree (from the website or from FTM 2010) WITHOUT attaching source info to it so that I can re-source everything (mostly with hints and attaching record sources from the website as well as adding my own from time to time) without creating a ton of duplicate sources?

Yeah after I ran into my first batch of duplicates and all I realized potentially bad the sharing of family trees can get.

I guess my big thing is that I don't know how to export without sources attached...tried it once or twice in FTM 2010 but there was still stuff attached. I figure since I am not to far in (only 70 people with about 40-50 of them cousins and stuff) I may just start over, stick to my pedigree for now and when I am waiting for something fill in the rest.

It depends on, among other things, the number of people already in your tree.

What you can do is export a gedcom without sources and then upload that to start a new tree.

On the new tree I suggest you forget about all links/hints that are to other trees and deal only with documents. Never add a hint to your tree until you are sure it applies to teh person you are documenting and never add more than one person at a time ( don't add entire families from census, etc.)

Yes- it will take a bit longer but that way you are sure not to get duplicates. Never-ever- enter a person more than once. Once entered you can always select them from the list of people in your tree to add as a wife, child, etc. to another person.

Is there a glitch with the program tonight or am I not doing something right? I'm tired of entering my name and dad's info over and over. Help! :)
Gretchen

Afternoon John,

1) Find the person you want to add a citation to.
2) Click the Edit Button
3) Go to the Facts tab
4) Double click on the event, such as birth
5) Press the button "Fact Citation"
6) Press New Source

Hopefully that helps you out?

Hello,
test driving this software (currently use FTM2005) but I can't figure out how to add or view the citation for a specific even such as a birth date. I see the citations tab but that seems to be generic to the person. On FTM2005 for instance, beside the birth date, or death date or marriage date the person name you can add a citation for just that even. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but my brain hurts trying to find out what it is:)
Hope someone can help and thanks!

Re: GEDCOM Residence vs Census

GEDCOMs are supposed to be universal, but sometimes one company has a tag that others don't. I used to find "Cause of Death" facts in GEDCOM files from FTM translated as a note or dropped when I imported them into FOW.

If both programs will let you, add one false individual with as many facts that are similar - census, residence, living, etc. - then export just him and open the files with Notepad and see how they treated the fact. Find one that both of them agree on.

(Roots Magic has a fact type named "Living", which lets you track where someone lived over the years. If he is listed as a survivor and "of Beloit" in obits for his relatives dated 1925 and 1935, there's a good chance he'll be in Beloit for the 1930 census.)

If you import "abc.ged", you should have a file named "abc.lst" in the same folder afterwards. It will have a list of the tags it could not cope with.

If you want to get really tricky, you can open "abc.ged" with Notepad and do a universal substitute of one tag for another. Make sure to use the "Match case" option, and back up your data beforehand. It would be prudent to save "abc.ged" as "abc_2".ged, also.

GEDCOM Residence v's Census

At present i use Family Tree Builder from MyHeritage to make my GEDCOM.

When I upload to ancestry, i notice that whilst "Occupation" gets uploaded fine, including the description part, any "Residence" information get uploaded as type Census without the description, resulting in loads of new hints each time I upload. If i check the exported GEDCOM file, the type that the residence information exports out as is "NOTE".

Have I been entering the residence information incorrectly or is a GEDCOM problem?
