I have a t member of my family (F-M). How can I record his name and gender as of transition without a birthdate? I know his birth record has been changed now. Can I use "aka" with former name? Should I create an event "transitioned"? I use Legacy program. I appreciate your help.

I have double first cousins in my tree. I am not sure what your question is but will attempt to answer. The only was to avoid having them in your tree 2 times is to check each name before you enter them but it may still happen.

If you have these people in your tree twice you can merge them. I start with the parents and then merge the children. The people will only be in your tree once but will show up on both lines in the tree.

Hope this helps.

Merge both trees? They are both already the same tree. There are lines in the tree that would be duplicates at a certain point, but the relationship might be off from the father's side and the mother's side.

I don't think I could merge a tree with itself??? I need something where I could highlight and copy part of one line and add it into the line after the connect on the other side just to save me the trouble of adding each name manually.

My mother and father both came from closely related ethnicity. At some places in both trees there are points where a certain ancestor or married couple are the same people. If I have one tree almost completed out, is there a way to copy and transfer a whole string of shared individuals to the other side of the tree. (Father and mother are both listed in the same tree).

Can I do this and keep the new relationships correct in the added tree information?

Thank you. I will try that.

Since I first posted, I discovered what caused my second problem. I apparently deleted the person that linked us all together.

I have had some success by clicking on the given relationship, and in quite a few cases it has re-calculated and given the correct relationship. Some of this problem seems to have come from duplicate people in the branch, which I seem to have quite a problem with. Looking at the branch has really helped eliminate some of these problems. Some of the information I have downloaded has also caused problems, with, as an example, on person having two sets of parents. I have had to delete about 4 generations from one branch because of this problem. I still have over 5400 people in my tree, so lots of room for error. I will keep plugging away, before I take out another membership to straighten our the last of the problems.

Thanks for your input. I will definetly be trying it.

Wayne

Can't help you with your second problem, but if I have a problem with a relationship, I first run the button under the name on the overview page. It will give you a complete connection from that person to the home person. Use this as clue sheet to find where the problem may lie. A lot of these problems seem to come from second and third spouses not being loaded correctly for me.

I'm trying to find my ancestors in the 1841 UK census; in 1851 they were at 66 Bedford St, Preston (Lancs UK), but name searches don't give me any believable matches. So I'd like to check the address but I don't see a way to actually search by street name. Is there one and I've missed it? Preston has something like 30 districts in this census so masses of images if I have to look through them all.

Thanks.

Well I've managed to solve my problem.

The male parent had 2 spouses - both with children. While adding census data to one of the children from the 2nd wife it managed to add a link from one of the children of the 1st wife to the 2nd wife. So this child appeared to have sprung from both wives! I deleted the child and that fixed the tree.

Fortunately the problem child has no descendants in the tree at the moment so I could do the deletion with minimal impact.

I have the same problem. One of my ancestors is now showing all the same children twice and some of them are showing the same children twice.

I had this problem once before and fixed it by deleting people until the problem went away. The trouble now is that the person I think is the problem is right in the middle of my tree and I hate to think what would happen if I delete him.

I think the problem happening when I was adding census data for one of his sisters and his name came up in the additional people list - but it didn't give me an option to say it wasn't a new person or to select an existing person.

You can create an online tree but...

You will find a stand alone genealogy program desirable for a couple of reasons, manipulating data and printing reports are the two biggest I can think of. Also, you don't have to be online to work on your genealogy.

Any software program will do- you aren't limited to Family Tree Maker. Some use FTM because it syncs with the online trees while others wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

If you decide to use a stand alone package try as many as you can before you buy- make sure the program you get it the one you like most- not the one most recommended.

Ancestry.com is a website and provides online Member Trees.

Family Tree Maker is a stand alone genealogy program that runs on a computer that is owned by Ancestry and syncs with Member Trees on Ancestry.com

Ancestry Family Tree is an older software program Ancestry used to provide but no longer sells or distributes. It was replaced by Family Tree maker.

As to looking at/copying from other family trees... DON'T!
Do your own research from scratch- that is the only way you can be sure it is as correct as you can make it.

Looking at family trees is *NOT* doing genealogical research.

Hi,

I am new to Ancestry.com and have lots to learn.
In order to create a family tree does one need to buy "Family Tree Maker" to create the tree and then upload it to Ancestry.com or can the tree be created in Ancestry.com directly?
Secondly I see a few public family trees that have members of my family. I don't personaly know the author. Can I use that tree as a starting point and somehow build upon it and save it with my own family name?

Thanks,
Mark

Somehow, my tree is showing the same entry twice quite often. I have went through and merged as much as possible, but my great grandmother still has the portrait of the same man stemming from her twice, and so forth for about 4 generations. It's the same entry showing up multiple times.

Any clues on where the issue is?

Yes, you can select the Advanced button, then select your husband's parents and then Select All Ancestral Related from the pull-down. You can the delete them all. If you want them to be in a separate tree, make a copy of the file and give it a new name first.
