You really should leave the tree togather cause spiltting it would only resalt in loosing your information to the other tree. It doesn't matter how big your tree gets there is enough room for all your ancesters to shair their stories with.

Thanks for all these messages! I wanted to split my tree on the maternal and paternal sides, just because it's called the Stearman tree where in fact it's as much all the other names on it but can see why it's a bad idea....

Maybe I'll just change it to Pat's tree!!

I split my tree because it was becoming unmanageable:-
1.Paternal grandfather and all his ancestors
2.Paternal grandmother
3.Maternal grandfather
4.Maternal grandmother
5 Wife's father and Wife's mother
(number 5 should have been split the same way, but it turned out that her mum and dad were related!)
It is quite easy to do using the All-In-One Tree, so first make sure you can view the All-In-One Tree. If your tree is too complicated, A-I-O Tree just hangs.
There is instructions here:

I have a simplified version of this for FTM16, If you want it please send me a PM.

This is how I maintain my records as well, they are stored in chronological order - Surname (Maiden if necessary), Given Name, Date Of Birth, etc....

I have been doing Family History on my family for 10+ years and the number of records are extensive and you absolutely would not believe the number of overlappers there are; it seems like you are making a lot of copies and doing alot of work however in the end you are saving yourself tons of work when you want to work on that person alone and their decendants...
