It sounds like you are using ancestry.com via your iPad web browser, I was describing how to upload photos via the Ancestry app. I don't believe you can upload photos using a web browser on iPad.

The Ancestry app is free and uses the same family tree you created on Ancestry.com. You might want to give it a try. This message board is used mostly for help with the Ancestry app.

Dave

Yes what you described is what I do. But the part where you are supposed to be able to select the files you want to upload is not a "clickable" area. It is just grey and not highlighted to be able to choose. The orange "upload selected files" button is choosable, but you can't upload until you choose a picture.

you can access the family tree by using the same sign in information on the actual Ancestry.com website and printing it from there.

I just verified the following works on my iPad:
- Select a person
- If necessary swipe from the right edge to open the info section for that person
- Select Gallery at the bottom right
- The Photo section of the gallery should be at the top. If there are no photos already attached the "Add Photo" button should be at the top. If photos are attached the button is below the existing photos.
- You should then get a popup that asks if you want to take a photo or choose an existing photo.

If that doesn't work can you describe in more detail what you are seeing?

Problems with Photo uploads from iPad / iPhone

I am admitting first thing that I have limited computer skills, so please be gentle with rebukes if I've made mistakes? Thanks! I seem to remember that when I first started using my iPad and iPhone that I could upload photos. But recently I can not. There is just blank or greyed out areas where I should be able to choose options. I tried using the help files online but the first thing they instructed me to do involved clicking on a green button and there were no buttons on my screen. Can anyone help me find out how to add photos using my apple products? I don't always have access to a desktop computer. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

Your program will not work with my iPhone or iPad. Can't add pictures. Tried to use the help function. First thing it says I must do is click the green button. But there is no green button on my apple ipone product to click. Why don't you make this program functional with apple products? You know there are thousands of us out here getting really frustrated with you.

Well, I got to this thread--it's March 23, 2013--because for the last week I have been having all the problems people have mentioned--constantly having to relog onto Safari, and Firefox such a mess I can't even use it. (When I click on "show how this person is related to me", I may or may not get the relationship, but when I click again to show the chain of relationships, I get a blank box with "undefined". When I am linking to another tree, whenever I add information like place of birth, the auto-entry thing pops up, and sometimes it will just hang open until I click the matching information, and sometimes it has this huge message that begins "System:Net. Web exception_The underlying connection was closed. And unexpected error occurred on receive...". The message goes on and on and on. And then I can't add anything.)

I have called twice, and neither customer service person, pleasant as they were , acted as if they had ever heard of Macs having peculiar problems. They told me to clean out cache and cookies, which I did, on both browsers, and it helped on neither. I installed an upgrade to Java Script, which one swore would help. It did nothing. The second person told me if cleaning out cache and cookies didn't work it meant there was something wrong with MY computer, but they are the ones making constant changes to the site, I have not installed any new software, and have no other computer issues whatsoever on any other site in either browser.

I have Ancestry Deluxe and have been on the site for 12 years and I find the cluelessness of the customer help people about the problems on Macs a real dereliction of duty on Ancestry's part. I tried reading part of the message I get in Firefox as mentioned above--I had copied about half of it--but only got out about one sentence, as the person was clearly not even listening. "Yeah, yeah", though not in so many words. He just said to stop using Firefox--but a couple of years ago when I was having problems with Safari they told me to switch to Firefox, because it was a browser they supported and Safari was not! Now they say they support Safari--some support!

I feel as if the need to sign back in on Safari happens whenever I go to an external site through Ancestry--Find-a-Grave and the new image thing that has that National Archives logo.

UPDATE: It is now March 26, the constant sign-in problem on Safari is, if anything, only worse. I just don't have it in me to call Ancestry again for more useless advice, and the suggestion it's MY computer when it is clear it's an ANCESTRY problem with MACS really burns me up.
Well, It's March 7th and the problem of having to sign in every 10 minutes or so, is still alive and kicking. But maybe someone can help me. When moving along the family tree, all of a sudden it disappears. But it is also difficult to navagate. when I try to move it from the left or right, it only moves about 1 inch. I am very frustrated.
It wasn't this way in the beginning.

As the apps you refer to are free, my (cynical) assumption is that this is the true cost :-)

Its nice to think they give away these free apps for our benefit - but does anyone REALLY believe that....

So, while I whole-heartedly agree with you, I won't be holding my breath, any more than I expect an answer when I ask them how I can completely eradicate the annoying wobbly "hints". I even have one on my own tree telling me when it thinks I was born. Its out by about 3 years and 6 counties!!!

Its all about marketing.

I agree. I use Safari on my iPhone and haven't had the problem for weeks. Ancestry recommended to me to try the following (in this order) : 1 Upgrade to the latest version of the mobile app. 2 log out and log back in to the mobile app 3 delete my mobile tree and reload it. I ended up doing all three steps and haven't had the problem since. I'm not sure which step fixed the problem as I was focused on fixing another problem which still hasn't been resolved.

I was using chrome also but with the IPad app for Ancestry it automatically sends you to the website thru Safari when you click on a link on the app to search for further documents. That was a pain when Safari didn't work but somehow I guess they fixed it and I go straight to Safari and it never logs me off anymore.
I guess they figured they better start supporting us MAC users since there are a lot of us.

Unfortunately the random logout issue with Safari has not been fixed. After using it with no issues for a couple of hours Acom started logging me out every couple of clicks.

The good news is that after I deleted Chrome from my iPad and reinstalled it is now working with Acom again.

That is great news if they have fixed the website to work with Safari on the iPad without constantly being logged out. I have been using Chrome for several months based on a suggestion in this thread - it has kept me logged in the entire time; today after the latest Chrome update it doesn't want to work with Ancestry (logging in sends me straight to the signup page). Guess I will be switching back to Safari.

I previously had similar problems on my iPhone and was told the same thing - that Safari was not supported. I continued to use it on my iPhone anyhow, logging in over and over again. Now suddenly everything is working properly and I'm not sure why. To fix some other problem support told me to delete my mobile tree and reload it. I don't know of this fixed the login problem or if Ancestry finally found the problem on their side.

New format for mobile search

Yesterday when I was using my iPhone to search for records on Ancestry all at once it was no longer the format of the regular Amcestry.com website but was a completely new format. Was anyone aware that this was happening? It takes some getting used to. All of the functionality seems to be there but it takes some hunting to find some things. It is not terribly intuitive. My main objection is that it no longer tales advantage of the iPhones ability to move sideways and to scroll vertically but now everything is vertical and it takes a long time to scroll to the end. In this case it seems like Ancestry is fixing something that wasn't broken. In my opinion the old format worked fine and I personally would like the option to work on "standard mode" rather than this new mobile mode. I'm Interested in other people's experiences with it.

It would be killer to mark GPS coordinates for a grave that I'm visiting through this app on my iPhone. It would be nice if there were some integration with maps as well. (As an alternative to Apple's map Google announced an SDK yesterday for iOS.)

GPS coordinates should be stored as part of the place structure as defined in GEDCOM 5.5.1.

Has anyone else had the problem of changes made on the app not "sticking"? I keep trying to delete folks but they don't go away. Synching with corrected online tree doesn't work. Also can no longer add people on app " by hand", only can add by finding a record and accepting the additions that way.... Submitted 2 emails to Ancestry. Still waiting to hear back. All happened after last Ancestry update. Logging out and back on doesn't help either. :-(

Agree, the Chrome browser seems to work well with Ancestry.com. I can also share a good customer service experience from all this as well.

I contacted Ancestry's support team about the issue I was having on my tablet: repeatedly logging out of ancestry.com accessed on original iPad using Safari as well as using another browser called icab mobile. The support person told me what others have reported, that Ancestry doesn't support safari. He recommended using the Ancestry app and also suggested downloading Google's "Chrome" browser for internet searches.

I must say, Chrome has worked consistently well for me in the weeks since my call to customer service. If only I could get the Ancestry app to call up Chrome now, instead of Safari, when internet searches are needed. Other than that the logging out issue is resolved for me. I'm a happy customer!
