After watching about researching on PBS I found out that in the 1860 census slaves were listed as personal property. With that info I looked at my paternal GGG grandmother in the 1860 census and found real estate was $2000.00 and personal property was $600.00. That would equate to about 6 adult slaves. She was a widow with adult children and used slaves to work the land. I sit and wonder if and how many of the male children possibly fathered children with female slaves. No one else in the family has figured out how to read the old census records.

Slaves in New Hampshire

Bill would posthumously grant freedom to New Hampshire slaves:

http://news.yahoo.com/bill-posthumously-grant-freedom-nh-sla...
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — When 20 slaves petitioned New Hampshire two centuries ago seeking their freedom, lawmakers decided the time wasn't right and delayed action.
Now, 233 years later, legislators in one of the nation's whitest states have decided the time is right to consider the request. A Senate committee on Wednesday unanimously recommended the full body posthumously emancipate the 14 petitioners who never were granted freedom.
Woullard Lett, a member of the Manchester NAACP, said it's never too late to right a wrong.
"It's symbolic and 200 years late, however then and now it's the right thing to do," Lett said before testifying at the hearing.
Valerie Cunningham, a historian and preservationist from Portsmouth, said she came across the slaves' petition in state archives nearly 30 years ago. It was originally submitted to the New Hampshire General Assembly on Nov. 12, 1779, while the Revolutionary War was still being fought.
The slaves all served in the war effort and believed the freedom being sought by colonists should be extended to them as well. They wrote, "Freedom is an inherent right of the human species" and that "public tyranny and slavery are alike detestable to minds conscious of the equal dignity of human nature."
"This is part of American history that just has not been recognized, and New Hampshire is not unique in that regard," said Cunningham, speaking in the hallway outside the hearing room.
Cunningham said in a history she wrote of the black community in the state's Seacoast region that of the original petitioners, six of the slaves were later freed and 14 died in bondage with legislators never acting on their request.
Black people accounted for 1.1 percent of New Hampshire's 1.3 million people in the 2010 U.S. Census.
The state was the last to honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a state holiday, but the slain civil rights leader's widow and children found New Hampshire residents welcoming when they visited following his funeral in 1968.
Cunningham said the state is no less welcoming to blacks than the rest of New England, but the tiny population in New Hampshire makes it more difficult for their voices to be heard.
State Sen. Martha Fuller Clarke, D-Portsmouth, is sponsoring the Senate bill. She told colleagues Wednesday that she hopes the Legislature will act quickly to emancipate the former slaves. The approval by the Public and Municipal Affairs Committee means the bill can now go before the full Senate.
Gov. Maggie Hassan has said she would sign the bill if approved by the full Legislature.
Cunningham said acting now would help bring attention to an African-American burial ground in downtown Portsmouth, where a mayoral committee is hoping to build a memorial park. The African Burying Ground Committee has worked for almost a decade to get the memorial built, and though they need additional money, a spokesman said they may break ground on the project this summer. The design would include granite engravings with passages from the petition.
The goal of the bill and the memorial park is to celebrate the culture and contribution of blacks to New Hampshire and bring that history to the fore, Cunningham said.
"It's sad that this is not in the schools. We need to make sure that the history we teach is more inclusive," she added.
Lett said he sees the bill as largely symbolic but hopes its passage will mean the Legislature doesn't plan to wait another 200 years to address the concerns of the black community today. He said those concerns include persistent wage and health inequalities and a disproportionate number of blacks in the state prison system.
----------------------------
Associated Press/Jim Cole - A section of a petition filled by 20 African slaves asking for their freedom more than 200 years ago is seen at the New Hampshire state Archives Wednesday March 7, 2013 in Concord, N.H. New Hampshire lawmakers are considering a bill that would posthumously grant the request of African slaves who petitioned for their freedom during the Revolutionary War.
My family is from Brunswick County too. My ancestor had a similar birth Cert, but the man listed on her cert is the slave owner, not her real parent. Her mother was owned by William Talley and she lived on the Talley plantation, but her father didn't. That type of "marriage" arrangement was common during slavery. My ancestor listed her father as Branch Walker on her marriage cert and she was found living with him in 1870. I found the same thing for your ancestor. Her slave name was Wilkes She was born while living on Burwell B Wilkes Plantation. Her mother was Margaret Wilkes and her Father is John Dennis. She listed Her parents as such on her marriage cert. BTW, Burwell B Wilkes 1805 was married to Lucy G Field on 11 Aug 1831 in Brunswick, Virginia. Look in his probate records...estate appraisals for Margaret's name.
Thanks for responding, and speaking for the Wilson Family, we are excited with the link to Leah and the McCants and the possibilities of "Links to our Past".

My family has had over 25 reunions, the most recent was in 8/12 in Pamplico/Florence, SC. Wish I had known the McCant family members were still in Pamplico, I sure would have given them a call. Also, I would love to exchange information, including pictures. We have been searching high and low for a picture of Drew, and if we had a picture of both together or both separate, it would be a blessing.

I am visiting family in NY and will be returing to FL next Wednesday. Please email any information and a phone. no, and I fill foward family information to you around 1/3/13.

C. Wilson

If you have ancestors who were slaves in the US (or who might have been), I would watch the PBS series Finding Your Roots. It's available free online, and most of the episodes are full of ideas on how to trace black ancestors, whether they were slaves or not.

Check the Virginia Slave Births Index. Its a 5 volume series of books that lists the births of (many)slaves from 1853 to 1865. It should be in your library's reference section. You may be able to use that to confirm which Braswell man (or at least which Braswell plantation) you need to focus on. From there go to the library of virgina's genealogy website (http://www.lva.virginia.gov/). If the will of the owner/owner's family is there, you can search it. Good luck.

I'm looking for information on James Waugh who was born in Adams County, PA but moved to North Carolina at some point. He was married to Elizabeth, and had many children. He purchased land and name the land Waughtown probably near the Winston-Salem or Broad Bay area. He had slaves and when he died many of them were divided and sold to his children and probably other people. When his wife died, the same thing. Is there any where I could get a full list of slaves that James Waugh may of HAD or FATHERED?

I have a similar situation.

My 4x g-grandfather was a white slaveowner who had 4 boys with his slavegirl. All I know about him is that his name was said to be John Whitfield, he was born in TN (not sure when) and moved to TX between 1851-1857. I assume he was born somehwere around 1825, since that's about when the slavegirl was born. Perhaps he was born between 1805-1830.

I'm trying to locate him on any document, but that just hasn't been possible with the little info I have on him. :(

Slaves were listed on the Census around 1850. The US had two types of Census records at that time. The first was a schedule 1 where it listed all free persons and the second is a schedule 2, where slaves were listed. If you find any relatives on the schedule 2, they were slaves at that time. There might be other ways to tell if your ancestor was a slave or not but this is one I know about. I hope this helps you out.

In what country?

In the US, slaves most often didn't appear on the census since they were property.

Provide more information and perhaps someone can help further.

Information on Slave Owners in and around Hampton, SC

I am doing research for my wife's family. She can trace her great, great grandfather (Richard C. Cohen b 8/10/1864), he is the son of Addie H. Cohen(b 1832) and her "owner". I suspect, this to be John Lawton (Jericho Plantation, Born 1830 D. 1908).

I have very little experience research slavery related records etc and any help or advice is welcomed.

Addie H. Cohen is the daughter of Annie Miah Cohen (b appx. 1819)

Does anyone have records of slaves owned by John Lawton? I know they kept track but haven't ever seen this kind of list with my own eyes.

We suspect the surname Cohen was adopted based on Cohen's Bluff Landing which was a nearby location where I believe slaves were sold.
