Supposedly, when my grandfather's ship came in to Ellis Island from Poland (via ?) around 1900 (give or take), it capsized and he had to swim ashore. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Know the ship's name? Date of event?

My Grandmother, Mary Benko, was 10 years old when she was enroute to Ellis Island in 1903 when her boat (?) sank and she & her sister & uncle along with many others (If not all) were rescued and transported to Ellis Island in the cargo bay by another ship.. She was born 10/24/1893 in Roznava, Slovakia. She spent her life in Ohio and married John Plachko at age 15 and had nine children and many grandchildren. Do you know of any other ship that sank in 1903? June- parmajak@cs.com

John, Did you ever find out the ship's name and details ? I am trying to find an immigration ship that my great - aunt came on in 1899 - 1900 that was shipwrecked and she lost all her possessions, but survived and was brought in to the port of Baltimore. She was coming from the Czech Republic, probably through Bremen , Germany.

Any updates or information on this ship? I have been searching for family that came to the US in 1899. My grandfather said that he believed they were onboard a ship that sank and lost many of their papers and possessions. I was skeptical until I read this post! The stories and years match! Please let me know if you have any information. Thanks
