Seeking details about this disaster, other than reports in the New York Times. My widowed great-grandmother, Emma Crosby nee Schonwald and her mother Fanny of Wilmington, North Carolina, is said to have been saved from the wreck. I am trying to verify and document this.

I did not know of any civilians other than the crew who were resecued but it is possible. The only known survivors were on the General Sedgwick but there might have been survivors resuced by other ships. Any family stories about how they were saved? Do you have photos of them. I'm probably the nation's expert on the General Lyon disaster. It was the largets loss of life ever off the North Carolina coast. It's a tragedy that it has been largely forgotten.
