@Hugbunney -- Thanks for posting. Have you found any documentary evidence to support that account? I know that there are undocumented claims to that effect that get repeated all the time on the Internet, but as far as I know there is no documentary evidence to support the claim that the Mary who was hanged was maiden-named Brockett, nor that Thomas Barnes Sr. was married to a Mary Andrews.

I ran across this http://www.bellavistaranch.net/genealogy/barnes.html

It would indicate that Maybee is from a different Barnes line.

There is one issue that needs to be considered. In 1663, the British Empire operated under the Julian calendar where the year changed on the spring equinox (March 22). Therefore, May 1663 preceeds January 1663. It is very difficult to know if dates have been converted to the current Gregorian calendar.

Andrus or Andrews is the surname of Thomas Barnes's SECOND WIFE, the one he married several months after his first wife Mary was hanged as a witch. See Lisa Johnson, "In A Peternatural Way", (Jan. 2007), a paper "talk" from her original research, now available online as a free downloadable PDF.

To be descended from the FIRST wife, you have to be descended from her children: Sarah, Thomas, Benjamin or Hannah -- and you very well be so descended!

The title of Ms Johnson's work is "In A Preternatural Way: The Witchcraft Trial of Mary Barnes". I need to type slower and spell check better.

Ms Johnson is presently executive Director of The Stanley-Whitman House in Farmington, CT.

This is very interesting. I will need to look up this book. I am a descendant of Edward Griswold, who served as a juror for the Carrington trials.

Thanks for the reference, yankeebob21. It was very helpful. I am a descendent through Thomas and Mary's son, Joseph.

Surnames: Barnes, Andrews
I found a reference to Mary Barnes in a publication that can be accessed through ancestry.com, "A catalogue of the names of the first Puritan settlers of the colony of Connecticut". It was printed in 1846 as a collection of names and events collected from state and town records. "Mary Barnes, of Pequett" was listed on p. 15 (online page counter).

Most exciting was a listing for John Andrews Sr, p. 111. He was from Hartford, d. 1681, w. Mary. Sons: Benjamin, John, Abraham, Daniel, and Joseph. Daughters: MARY BARNES, Hannah Richards, and Rachel Buck.

Mary's husband, Thomas Barnes, was listed on pages 17 and 114

I think this provides a good clue as to her maiden name and parents. Here is the link: http://interactive.ancestry.com/16187/dvm_LocHist004143-0006...

That's Thomas Barnes' second wife. Both of his wives were named Mary. He married Mary Andrews/Andrus after his first wife Mary was hanged as a witch.

Thanks, Fisk_Scoville! I had already read about that, but just forgot. Oh, well. At least I will use it as a source for his second wife.
