no I havent ever read the real records i didnt realize they were online most of my reasearch was done in highschool through some books i found inthe liabrary and the stories that were passed down in the family thats where I learned about the herbs we still have extensive herb gardens that we use. the account about the woods is a little diffrent we were always told it was a field and her skirts came out dry. but this is all being paqssed down from person to person I will try to find the documents i might be able to find some on the other "witch" we have in the family. That poor woman didnt fair as well she was burned and drowned. I did also find an account that told that george fled months before the trial and rumered himself dead to flee perscution. But once again most of these accounts were found in various books some written by supposed "witch hunters" i cant put a bunch of credibuility in them!

Susannah is featured in the book "Devil in the Shape of a Woman". This book details both her trials. I am also a direct descendant, she being my 11th great granddmother.

Hi Jamie. I just found out a few days ago that I am a decendant of Susannah. I was wondering if you would send me the information you have. I'm having trouble finding the records! I thought you would be interested to know that I found out from my older cousin's that my grandfather used to say that she had walked from one town to the next during a rainstorm and her shoes and skirts never got muddy, because she was able to dance between the raindrops! I hope to hear from you soon

It is very sad, she is my ninth great grandmother. I was not surprised at all since I already knew my ancestors came here in the 1600's.

Surnames: Cole, Hadley, Martin, North, Davis
I have been researching my Cole ancestry and have taken it back to a Phillip Cole and Mary Hadley of Amesbury, Massachusetts who raised six children there in the years 1698 to 1712. Mary's parents were Samuel Hadley and Jane Martin also of Amesbury. Jane's parents were George Martin and Susannah North "the witch". There is an 18 year gap in the Amesbury Vital Records from 1668 to 1686 and that appears to be the reason why the births of the older children of Samuel and Jane Hadley do not appear. I have searched far and wide for mention of a daughter of Samuel and Jane named Mary but only recently came across a deed from December 17, 1714 that involves a transaction between Philip Cole of "Almsbury" and his wife Mary selling 1/3 of a 40 acre parcel to Ephraim Davis of Haverhill for the sum of 50£. In the transaction, Philip refers to the land as being the same land he purchased from his "honored father, Samuel Hadly" on March 26, 1707. I know father was sometimes used to describe a father-in-law relationship so I am making the assumption Mary's maiden name was Hadly. The Amesbury VR's show Elisabeth, b. Oct 10, 1688 as being the 4th daughter of Samuel and Jane. Who then were the three older ones? Most historical records name Esther (Hester) and Hannah but no third possibility. My theory is that Mary was probably born about 1678 and was roughly 18 when she married. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about this whole thing is that I cannot locate a marriage record for Philip Cole and Mary Hadley anywhere.
Can anyone shed more light on this family? Was it even a possibility in those times that the two were never married but rather were in a common-law relationship?

I have always been told I am a direct descendant of Susannah North Martin through my grandmother's line. You mentioned that you have her family tree documented. Is it possible for you to get me a copy of that? My email is: summer.nanny.mv@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Lisa Norkus

Many marriage records were lost over the centuries or burnt in town hall fires. You have the closest date for marriage as 1697 as Philip and Mary's first child was born 18 Feb 1698 in Amesbury. Philip was a resident of Wells ME on June 4 1716 and many Cole families (William b.1615) (Nicholas and numerous others lived in Wells or nearby.
