You can also keep track of them by choosing the options on the right side of the Board that says "Add Board to Favorites", or "Add Board to Alerts", or you can choose to add a Thread to your Favorites or Alerts, too. Adding to your Favorites or Alerts means that you can view any of those you chose by clicking onto the "Message Boards" tab at the top of the page (under "Collaborate") and see them at any time. "Alerts" will be sent to your email account on a Daily basis, which will include links to any new messages in those Alerts.

Unless the post has been edited by the board's administrator or the post is extraordinarily old, it is possible for the author to remove the check next to "Send me an alert when anyone replies to this thread".

Addition: Should have said that you can do this on the Ancestry side. Don't know if it works on the RootsWeb side.
That's odd. What's listed under Page Tools isn't affected by whether the board has an admin or not. But, as long as they gave you a way to unsubscribe, no problem.

That box is automatically checked off unless you uncheck it. There is no way at present to go back and uncheck the box after if is done and even the board admin can't do it for you. Unless policy has changed the HelpDesk staff CAN do it for you but I believe they only offer to remove ALL notifications on a one time basis...not just a single message reply.

Joan

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought about this and did some checking. It turned out I have only one account with the same login info for the past five years. The email Alerts I had been getting for this website have links in them which take me straight to the website here with my current login info. The guy I spoke with confirmed this.

However I think I know what might be causing the problem. When I posted a message a couple of years ago, I checked the box for "Send me an alert when anyone replies to this thread." So the Alerts I am getting now may have to do with the very old thread; someone was posting replies to that thread. But gee, it was about two years ago when I started the thread.

That is what I thought too. This Board is not even in my List of "Message Boards" nor in my List of Alerts." So because it is not anyplace, I should not be getting the Alerts at all. So obviously somehow this got corrupted.

At my end there is no "Remove Board from Alerts" under Page Tools. I called Customer Service, and it was discovered that this Board no longer has an administrator and has not had any since 2010. The administrtor who set this Board up disappeared.

So this Board is managing itself.

He gave me an email to send this URL to them, explaining the situation, and someone there will unsubscribe me.

Hoepfully this will work after one year of trying and pulling my hair out.

Thanks though.

Hi Fawn. Firefox will do the same thing but it tends to hang your pc when it gets more than 3 versions trying to run at once. Or it tells you that Firefox is already running.

I have had as many as 12 versions of Google Chrome running at one time. My laptop was crawling at that point. It is an easy fix which is nice...

It may depend on the browser you are using. Google Chrome (which is great for translations) has a problem where it loads multiple version of itself(load module) that you can't see unless you go into task manager. The easiest way to get rid of the extras is to exit the browser wait about 10-15 seconds until they all shut down and then start over. I am not a techie so I don't have any idea what causes this problem, but it will definitely slow down your PC. I think this could be your problem because you are writing to your own replies and sometimes that just (for lack of a better word) confuses the machine.

You haven't gone wrong. It's just that the boards haven't been re-indexed in a while so your posts aren't appearing in searches. Your posts will appear in searches when staff gets around to reindexing.

In the meantime, you can also find your posts by looking at any one of them and then clicking on (View posts) next to your author ID. You may want to also click the star next to your author ID which will add it to your My Favorites list. From there you'll always be able to bring up all your posts, either in chronological order or by board.

Now, when I search using those names (for instance, "Elmo White, Opal Baker"), my messages don't appear in the results. In fact, the only way I can find them is to search with my user name. Where have I gone wrong?

In theory, using Advanced Search and entering LONG into the Last Name (surname) field should work, but I see that it isn't.

You might have to resort to using Google search and using some of the operators to eliminate word pairs. See http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&... for information about that.

If you are logged in with the account (username) you used to post the messages while viewing the message click the link to delete the post. You cannot delete any replies to your posts though. If you posted under an old account you no longer have access to click to REPORT ABUSE while viewing the post and request that the board admin delete the post. However, an alternative would be to post a reply to your old post updating the information...and correcting any error in the old posts.

Joan

You have the answer about a Marriage BOARD but if you are asking because you want to post marriage records post them on an appropriate surname or locality board and select MARRIAGE as the classification for your post. By doing that someone doing an advanced search for only marriage posts will find your posts.

Joan

Community Guidelines, FAQs, and board help plus the Admin Info link at the top of the admin pages.

If you care to search the archives of the RootsWeb Review there have also been many articles on proper board usage. OR...since you have stated you filed a complaint about a board admin -- perhaps you should have posted on the boards admins board rather than the boards users board.
When I went in to the 'Waller' board this evening, it had changed format completely. Instead of listing the threads starting with the latest with the subject line it now starts at the beginning (1998) listing both the subject line and the body. This board has over 15,000 threads. I certainly don't want to have to go through hundred of pages to get back to the latest threads.

I made no settings changes - I don't have any idea how to do it. Can anyone suggest a way to get back to the default setting? This is the only board that seems to be affected.

Thanks for any help,

Carole
