What does a favorited message actually do?

What does a favorited message actually do?

If I favorite a message, does this mean that I'll get notifications when someone replies?

Way back when if you got locked out of your email account there was no getting it back, that happened to me a couple of times. I've retained my old Ancestry user names via those old email accounts and have added those user names as favorites, so I can go back through them, BUT I want to be alerted to replies of all my old posts.

I want to be sure that favoriting them will do this. I really hope I don't have to manually check the bazillion comments and questions I made on a regular basis.

Alternatively, is there a way to merge my old user names? That would even be better!

since the email notices have long been "iffy" probably your best bet is to add the boards you want to follow to My Alerts. Then when you visit the boards click on My Alerts and read fro the top down to view messages posted since you last checked. The newest will be on top. This way you won't have to depend on missing any posts of interest.

No, you can't merge usernames which belong to another account, which is what you describe. Every account has a unique username.

===========

There is no way to "favorite" an individual post, but you can "favorite" a message thread (even one post constitutes a thread), see the attachment, see "click star" to favorite the thread. Clicking the "see all" next to add/remove thread will take you to your page of favorite threads

The second arrow line "click here" will take you to the page which lists your favorites, whatever you've "starred" as a favorite. a message board or thread. Be sure and scroll down the page. While "favorite" boards (can) appear on your homepage, providing you've customize the homepage with the message board box, there is no such option on the homepage for *favorite* threads. You can remove *favorites* by clicking the star.

Another way to get yout favorites is pulling down the *Collaborate* menu (in the main menu line-up at the top of any page) and choosing Message Boards.

If you want to *favorite* threads from your old username/account, you'll need to do this from your current user account. Simply do an *advanced* keyword search on the message boards, entering in you old username in the author field.

I know how to favorite threads, my question is will it notify me when a new reply is made in said thread.

I appreciate your answer though and I'm sorry if I was unclear.

The only way to get notifications/alerts is to post a new message (from your current account) on the threads you want to received alerts from; be sure and leave the box checked below the message.

You can then check the activity on the thread from your home page *Recent Member Activity" and/or receive an email alert. This depends on your personal settings.

The problem is that no matter what you do some ISPs will not deliver the notices...you can't really be SURE you will receive them even if they are sent out by Ancestry. And if one gets returned Ancestry will place the email address on "no mail" status and you won't get any notices in the future. That is why I prefer checking and using the My Alerts feature instead.

That's odd. I use Gmail and that's not a problem for me at all. That's what I love about Gmail, it doesn't decide for me. I would be pretty ticked if an ISP I was paying for removed them.

That is incredibly disappointing. I wonder what the rationale is behind that? I've never seen a forum that doesn't let you subscribe to threads. The whole point to a board system is communication such as this. If I find a conversation I find interesting, it doesn't mean I need to reply to it. I may want to see if someone replies to another request but from what I'm hearing I'm out of luck on that.

That just doesn't make any sense to me at all.

ETA: Thank you again though. I do appreciate it.

If you *favorite* a thread you haven't participated in, GO TO THE MESSAGE BOARD page as described above and check to see if there has been any action, there is a date next to last posted message. If you want to receive emails alerts to a thread, you have to participate in the thread and leave the box checked (it's check by default) just below the message.

*Favoriting* = subscribing.

ALL mail providers filter mail to some extent or you would receive tons of spam and scams (more than actually do get through). The initial filtering is done at the server level so you would not even be aware that it is being done.
