You forgot the rest of the list of the in Scandinavia commonly known Skilfinga-dynasty; Yngvar, Eystein, Adils, Ottar, etc back to Agne (around y. 400) :) They have burial mounds with their names attached to them and figure in the Sagas, and in Beowulf.

These are saga material but also archealogical and partially proved, the debate about who's historical is still going on. Beyond that there is certain unvalidated proof that the Skilfinga has connections with the Amals ( Alareik = a relative in king Alrek) of the Gothic migration on the continent (that figures in for example the Hervarar Saga), and could also be the latter dynasty of the even older partly historical Ynglinga-dynasty overruling an elder culture, and starting with Yngve/(Frey)and his children the centuries after year 0, and the stories of Odin and other dynasties related to him. :) There is commonly known proof and serious debates about this (not the Odin part), but either way the first couple of names are certainly validated and could be added. :)

It was not the Danish court. It was the Norweigian court. His name was Ove Louvig born about 1865. My brother met someone when he was younger that had the Norweigian Guardsmen listed. He was with my father (who spoke Norweigian) and actually saw his photo.

Actually, Blanche was his grandmother. He was only 3 when Blanche killed his family, and he was spirited away by the Cistercian monks. The monks raised him in a world of peace and security. If you asked me to return to a scheming, murdering bunch of infighting "royals" and give up the only life he really remembered...leave the warm and beautiful northern Italy countryside for a land of strangers whose language he had probably forgotten, I'm thinking he didn't think it was worth it. As it was, he married a wealthy heiress, inherited a silk and agricultural estate, why leave? I wouldn't leave that for some promise of a bloody battle between people I never even knew in a foreign land, even if it was mine by right. If he wasn't raised to be greedy and power hungry, what more could a man ask for?

I encourage you to visit www.salvoni.us where you will see many of us listed. Salvoni is a very unusual name. You will also see a copy of the transcript of the letter that explains (in English and in ancient Italian) this story.

We are still trying to find official records, and my "cousin" is leaving for Italy this week to pursue this quest. He's from Lombardy and so is a native and knows his way around. He didn't find the letter in his grandfather's things until after he had moved to Canada.

If all this proves to be true, it would expose the dark side of the royals of that era, but you can find it out there today anyway if you look hard enough. My cousin is Salvoni by birth from a long line of Salvoni's that are supposed to go back to this original Magnussen. If DNA could prove a tie to the Magnussen line, I doubt if anyone would want that to be proven from their side so finding a volunteer descendant would be unlikely. Being female, all I can do is help with the web site and hope the truth is someday shown.

-Vicki

King Fairhair to Njord Noatum to Cleopatra??

Ok...so I traced my family to 1500 in Vest Agder via my Bydeboker, then I found someone with a common ancestor, who had a line back to Harald Fairhair. Then I found another connection to Njord Noatum, then searching Ancestry.com I find people linking Njord to Cleopatra, and a bunch of other people with Njord in thier lines back to the dawn of time...

Im a creationist, and my faith has me believing that at some point we all go back to Adam and Eve. And I know that genealogy has many mistakes, and some websites have Njord Noatum as a king of the Swedes or a Norse God...

But my nice little hobby has got me scratching my head.

What do my cousins via Fairhair think???

I would love to know! Is there really a link? And I mean really, I am happy to be Norwegian Royality, but...Cleopatra?

Lois Gustafson Wullenweber

Norway was ruled by the Danish court

1022 King Canute the Great (of Denmark) conquered also Norway

1379
Marriage ties linked Norway with both Sweden and Denmark, and Queen Margarete, the wife of Haakon VI, succeeded in gaining control of the country as their son the king was only five years old. (He had, by the way, been elected King of Denmark already.)

1536
Norway becomes a subject of the Danish crown, little more than a Danish province. Danish becomes the written language of Norway. Reformation makes Norway Lutheran.

============================================

and then the Swedish court
1814
The peace treaty of Kiel gives Norway to Sweden. Norway declares independence at Eidsvoll, but after a short war against Sweden Norway agrees to a personal union with Sweden. The Norwegian constitution was written.

1905
The union with Sweden falls apart and Norway becomes an independent kingdom. The Danish prince Karl becomes king Haakon VII of Norway.

standard genealogy working back step by step
will find the lady in question
if the records survive

Hugh W

see
http://www.lysator.liu.se/nordic/scn/faq63.html

more

http://www.lysator.liu.se/nordic/scn/faq61.html

Royal family news

http://www.norway.org/

Chris; I don't know if you are still receiving the message board. In my family tree I have Anna Olsdtr born circa 1685, she is the mother of Ivar Torbjornsson Royrvik: Torkjell Knutsson Oma B. circa 1618, his wife was Sigrid Nilsdtr. does this seem close. Remember the last name usually was a farm name and not a family name, such as Oma.

Hi Chris; having entered this correspodance late, I am not sure what it is exactly that you are asking. Have you connected your ancestry to Harald Haarfagre, or Harald Hardrada. I can send you to a site that if you have connected to either of these will take your ancestry back to 100 B.C. Harald Hardrada was Harald 1 gg grandson from his 2nd wife. My Ancestry to Harald 1 is through his 3rd wife. He had 4 wives that we know of, probably more and several concubines.
look at this site It'll take you quite a while to go through it because it is very extensive, covering several brances of families that are inter-related. The Lady that wrote this is a born Norwegian and collage professor of English in France. She put a lot of work into this research and has all of it backed up from records where the information is documented.
go to http://perso.wanadoo.fr/kelly.petit/806.htm
this should take you right to Harald Haarfagre Halvdansson (King Harald 1).
Hordaland is the area or county just north of the Hardanger Fjorden. Most everyone from that area is related to Harald in some way or another. My family came from Strandebarm on the north coast of the Hardanger fjord.
good luck, Colin

Hi Chris:

In my own search for nobility in my own line, I found this out. Norway didn't have a King until the 1900's. I did find out that they were under danish rule until that time. So I contacted the Danish Embassy on line, and they directed me to the place where I might find out about the Military for the Danish King. My great great uncle was the Captain of the Kings guard. So I know the frustration you are having. I hope that this helps you out.
Kathi

Re: A Scandinavian Court?

Sorry Mary, but neither I have any answer to the question. First when should this "messaliance" (it is not my word but the word probably for it at the time)? If it was in the 19 th centuary in Norway it must have been when the Bernadotte family ruled aswell in Norway. They are also well known for having "affairs". and "illegitime" children themself, at least some of the kings, begining with the first; Jean Baptist Bernadotte Karl XIV Johan (I do not know what number he had in Norway).
Norway have a very small aristochracy, probably because it was ruled from Copenhagen and Denmark for so many centuries before it had the union with Sweden.
This story about a lady in waiting and a royal guard is probably a often told story. I wouldn´t say it is not the truth. But to have the possibility to find them you must know when it occured and trying the "Eikaas" from "Jolster". Try to go in and search for the two names Eikås seems to be a village in Norway aswell I took a short quote from the internet below:

"Marte Nilsdtr. Eikaas was born in 1726 in Eikås, Jølster. She died in 1783 in Søreide, Fana. She married Daniel Daniels. Gjesdal in 1745 in Jølster"

it is a bit strange spelled but seems like it could be of interests for you. It seems to be much more in English aswell...
so try:
Eikaas
Eikås
Jolster

Sincerely Yours: Steve

There is a story in my family that a male ancestor named Eikaas from Jolster was a palace guard. He married a lady in waiting to the queen. I had assumed that ladies who served the queen were daughters of earls or dukes if not princesses. Are there court records that would document 'scandals' of a lady running off with a guard?
