Amazing roots and so good to know them.
Email me Catine@aol.com if you wish.

I am convinced my great great aunt Annie was also on the Marlborough, but being only a servant I can find no lists containing these names. There is also the possibility that she got out of Russia before the problems there, again no documentation. Somewhere, so done may have the link. Thank you again for your info.

Also,

Princess Olga Orloff nee Princess Belosselsky-Belozersky who died in Paris in 1923 was the divorced (1917)wife of Prince Vladimir Orloff and was a passenger with her only son Prince Nicholas and his wife (the younger daughter of Grand Duke Peter) on the H M S Marlborough.Prince Vladimir left Russia seperately with his second wife Princess Elisabeth and settled a Lamorlaye his estate near St Cloud where he died in the mid 1920's...Princess Olga is most remembered for her portrait by Serov. A tall, extremely graceful woman reputed to be the best dressed woman in St Petersburg..she had inherited her blue eyes but not her beauty from her mother nee Skobolev..sister of the famous General and of the celebrated beauty Zina Countess Beauharnais and Duchess of Leutchenberg.

How wonderful. You do know that Priness Olga Konstantinova Orlova was on the HMS Marlborough along with the rescued court. She was born Belosselskaya-Belozerskaya. She and her familiy are well documented in the Memoirs of Prince Serge Sergeevitch Belosselsky-Belozersky (preface by Marvin Lyons) published by Jacques Ferrand.

Also there is a long section, including photographs of Princess Olga, about the family on the following site:http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=1079.0

Thanks for replying. By speaking again to the cousin who has the original photos, checking dates etc I am convinced that somehow there was a connection between Princess Olga Orlova and Annie Rumball. The photo that is in possession of the family is the same as paintings I have found of the princess, as well as the inscription from "Olga" with a personal note to Annie. There are other Russian articles that this Annie brought with her when she came to live at my great grandfather's, her brother. Now, to find the connection!

The only English staff who held the position of governess, that accompanied HIH, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia back to England were:

Miss Coster,

Miss Turk,

Miss King,

Miss Henton,

All the rest, 83 members of the Imperial Household, had Russian and German surnames.
W. Wysocki Kieff was the Official photographer to the Russian Imperial Court. Members of the court, courtiers, retainers and servants were often times photographed at this studio. The honor is very similar to royal warrants in England, where shops can display a sign stating that they provide the British Royals with shoes, soap, umbrellas, silver, cars, etc....

I believe the studio was in St. Petersburg. The style of her clothes would suggest 1880's or 1890's.

Here is a site with other photos of W. Wysocki Kieff.

http://www.hobby-sklep.pl/index.php?shop=1&ile=15&ca...

Good Luck hunting.

I have a photo of my wife's ancestor who was a Governess in court of the czar, we believe Nicholas 11. Alice Walkerley was born 1867 and after her fathers death in 1879 was taken in by a rich uncle. She was educated in paris and at some point became a Governess in the Court of the Czar.

The photo attached shows her in a studio pose with a Russian royal seal of some sort stamped on the bottom. It is composed of the Imperial crown etc and two letters which are the cyrillic letters Y and P. We cannot work out what these stand for as they do seem to be Royal initials. There are also two head profiles but we cant definitively identify them as the Czars.

Can anyone pinpoint which Czars they are and what the letters/initials mean, and a rough date period? It is a large file to facilitate zooming in on the seal.
thanks

Hello I am not sure if you have found any information. My ggg grandfather was also a protector of the Czar of Russia. I have found a story in the local paper where they interviewed him. He recounted being selected as a member of the special guard and protected the Czar and other heads when they visited. If you could share any info that you found it would be great.

- Leo Akselerasjon

Forskjeller

Cavalier Cross av Order of Frelseren Gresk (1900)
Order of St. Anna IV grad napisyu "For mot" (14/04/1904)
Order of St. Stanislaus II klasse med sverd (06/01/1905)
The Order of St. Vladimir av IV grad Swords (12/16/1905)
Order of St. Anne II grad (24/11/1914)
Sverd av Order of St. Anne II grad (24/12/1914)

Martin bruvoll
Heinaveien 25
5515 Haugesund
tlf: +4790109083
epost: martin.bruvoll@gmail.com

I am so happy I found this thread!

My great-great-grandfather was a bodyguard for Czar Nicholas at the Summer Palace. His name was Micheal Nakoneczni and he was a personal friend and barber to the Czar. We have his uniform and everything. My great-great- grandfather was an extremely religious Russian Orthodox and the Czar told him to leave and go to the United States, and offered to advance him money in order to get his family out as well. When my great-great-grandfather was going through Ellis Island they changed his last name to Nick. I am having a hard time finding anything of my family- one reason last name change at Ellis Island, on US Census documents they state they are from Poland (including my great-grandmother who is actually from Austria), and spelling of their first names may have been changed too. My great-uncle is still alive (Michael Nakoneczni's grandson) and has a great memory for a 92 year old but I am still have not made much progress. If anyone has any idea where to search for a guard list that would be a huge help!

Family story has a female member of my family (possible last name of Rumball) was a servant/lady in waiting? to the Dowager Empress of Russia or perhaps her daughter. Would have escaped to England with them. Is there a record of what servants came with the family when they arrived in London? Our family has photos with personal notations -"from Olga" is part of one.
Can find info online of members of royal family that came on HMS Marlborough, but have never found an explanation to accurately explain these photos and artifacts, can anyone help?

We have a family "lore" that a GGUncle was the Tsar Nicholas II body guard. That he was the first one executed. His last name was Sezonov or Sezanov. In my searchings though I haven't read that any of the Tsar guards were present at the execution, just the servants. Also the only Sezonov I see related to the Nicholas II story is a political figure. Does anyone else know who the royal guards might have been, and where did they go when the Romanov's were imprisoned?

I am trying to track a pre-Revolution Moscow family named Lizov and Marcheret. Alexandre and Alexandra Lizov and Arkady Marcheret. I have several entries for the name Lizov in the Moscow city directories for 1914 and 1917.
Alexandre Marcheret died during the First World War. Alexandra Lizov latr married Arkady Marcheret (her husband's cousin) in Chita or Harbin, then they moved to Shanghai, then to Paris. Any suggestions on leads?

Alexandra Marcheret had some sort of connections to the Troubetskoy, Maltsev, and Zherebkov families, but I don't know what kind: friendship, family, social climbing?
Any suggestiosn will be very welcome.
John Hill

Hi Sally,
The Bestuzhev-Riumins are a branch of the Bestuzhev family. I am related to Nikolai Alexandrovich Bestuzhev, one of the 'revolutionary Bestuzhev brothers'. I have been in contact with several family members, including a direct descendant of Natalia Feodorovna Wright nee Bestuzheva, over the past decade. Please email me alexeimazin(at)me.com and I will forward you Paul's contact details. BTW, Natalia Feodorovna married Thomas Wright on 30 July 1809 at the British Chaplaincy (English Church) St Petersburg Russia. She was born 06 August 1790 in St Petersburg and died 29 October 1857 in St Petersburg. Thomas Wright was born 01 November 1777 in England and died 19 August 1852 in Bad Gastein Austria.
Regards,
Alexei

Looking for George, son of Bertha and Syed Ameer Hassan Meerza

Hi!

I'm looking for my half Uncle George. His mother's name was Bertha and his father's name was Syed Ammer Hassan Meerza. He has a half sister living in Pakistan named Parveen Meerza. His father is my maternal grandfather and his half sister (Parveen)is my mom. I believe George's mother's family (Bertha's family) were part of Russian aristocracy and were persecuted or went into hiding during the communist regime in Russia. My mother and grandfather lost all touch with him due to the iron curtain. I am looking for George and my cousins and would love to meet him. His half sister (my mom) is very eager to meet him as well. George would be around 70 - 75 years old now. If you know of him, please contact me at zaz520@hotmail.com

I was told by my Mom that either Bolotov or Fufaev of the flight from Moscow- NY in 1929 were one of her father's half-brothers - thus, my great-uncle. I notice name of Bolotov is listed as your relatives. My grandfather was born in 1895 in "white Russia" - Minsk, now known as Belarus. He came over as Metrefan or Metrephane Kaluk and was renamed Michael Cook upon arrival - hence mmy Mom's maiden name. Anyone know about myfamily member. He was famous for the flight in 1929 as the 2nd pilot.

Kristina, I'm afraid I have no further information on Nikolai Gudim Levkovic. I have seen his big grave in Geneva and I myself wondered who he was. A book about the cemetery in which he is buried has only this to say:

"Etablie tout au bord du chemin transversal, une très ancienne concession (no 251) a été offerte à un jeune étranger. Le prénom NIKOLAI est écrit en gros caractères cyrilliques. Sur un côté du monument, quelques lettres sont encore discernables, et l'inscription intéressera peut-être les amateurs d'onomastique. Nous lisons: Nikolai Viktorovitch Gudim Levkovitch (1846-1867)."

There is no other information about this grave and the lettering in cyrillic is very faded. When did your great-grandmother live in Geneva? Surely later than the date of Nikolai's death in 1867? I'm afraid I don't understand Italian so if you could reply in English or French it would be easier for me.

Best, Fiona
