Looking for any info on - Philip Koch or (Koh) was born in Germany Born: about 1862 Yagodnaya Polyana, Russia . His parents were Martin Koch (Koh) married to Anna Marie Pfoffenroth. Philip married Elisabeth Machleit, Born: 16 November 1863 in Yagodnaya Polyana, Russia.
I am not sure how much of the following is fact but this is what I have.
About 1880 Philip Koch entered military service in the Russian Revolution. Some of his older children may have been born in Yagodnaya Polyana, Russia but we know by birth certificate that the second last son Henry was born in Szczesliwice, Warsaw, Poland which may have been Russia at that time in 1901. He may have been there from about 1882 - 1903. Stories say he was killed in battle in October 1903 although I can't find a battle at that time. We have nailed down his death by a note in Elizabeth's prayer book that Mary (last child) was born June 3, 1903 was an orphan of 4 months.
Philip was in battalion and was knifed three times in the stomach with a sword by the enemy. He bled to death on the battlefield. Philip is buried in the Czar Army Cemetery, Warsaw, Russia. We can't find this cemetary. Philip's widow, Elizabeth Koh, was presented with medals of Honour and bravery on Philip's behalf. Elizabeth had the medals hand painted on Philip's Army picture
The picture Philip in his army uniform is attached.
Any feedback at all will be a big help.
I have a military picture but I can't seem to post it. Any ideas?

If you want ,send me the photo through my profile, I will try to identify the medal. You can find records of medals in Russian archives so it is a very good lead.

Hi dale_carriere

There is a lot of information about Yagodnaya Polyana settlement of Germans in Russia. Just type Yagodnaya Polyana in any search engine. There are some censuses available. Surnames Koch and Pfaffenroth ( not Pfoffenroth) appear in various listings.

The medals I think are more Poland specific. Recommend to post on Poland message board and ask about the cemetary as well. I could not find anything matching on Russian Imperial army websites.

Any questions, ask. Good luck.

You might want to consider a Poland's board. The regulars on that board should be able to tell about the cemetery. You might also want to check out http://genforum.genealogy.com/poland/
Tadeusz WYSOCKI lives in Warszawa as does contributes on the board.

I have done research on Yagodnaya Polyana and found the census etc. It is a cooincidence that you mention Szczesliwice because that is where we believe he was posted because we have a birth certificate of one of his children born in Szczesliwice. Family stories tell that he died in battle and his body was taken by his soldiers to his house. That seems odd. He died in 1903 but we can't seem to find a battle around that time. Apparently in 1903 he lived in the same place as Johann or Johannes Leinweber but I am have trouble tracking him down too. The family believes he was a Pastor but research has led me to believe he was a teacher and assistant Pastor as the Lutheran Church has no records of him. He and a lot of his family went missing in 1929 and was never heard from again. His letters stopped coming to Canada then.

Thank You for the information I will try your suggestions. If I find out I will post the answer.
