Would love to find more Stuart ancestry from Scotland. My great great grandfather was James Rutherford Stuart from Edinburgh Scotland. His parents died of cholera and we have no record beyond him. He was born August 12 1840 in Edinburgh and emigrated to Utah.

Good point. I think that any American with significant English ancestry, especially if they emigrated prior to the Revolution, would possibly be a descendant of the Plantagenet kings, and therefore Charlemagne. My ancestry can be traced (on my father's side) back to several of the Plantagenets. Many of my English ancestors were not the "huddled masses yearning to be free", but rather landowners who had become Quakers and left the British Isles to escape persecution. They were descendants of several noble families who had married into the royal family. However, to a conspiracy theorist, I might be a threat....

I saw this on the Royal School of Needlework website, I thought this might help.

The Queen's Coronation 1953
- Buckingham Palace exhibition this summer
Just over 1400 people visitors saw our Royal Connections exhibition
last year and one of the highlights was our Coronation Robe sampler.
Our tour guides were often asked when the actual Coronation Robe of
State would be exhibited, so we’re delighted to tell you that between 27
July and 29 September 2013 the robe will form part of a Royal
Collection exhibition at Buckingham Palace to mark the 60th
anniversary of the Coronation. On display will be a spectacular array of
dresses, uniform and robes worn by the principal royal party. Works of
art, paintings and objects used on the day will also be on display to
recreate the atmosphere of that extraordinary occasion. We hope that
some of our archives will form part of the exhibition.
More information at www.royalcollection.org.uk

Hi
Yes I also have the same issue, if people keep putting on incorrect information, why keep going surely they see the hints that we would put on, dont they check those either? One wonders.
The other issue I am having is people who have family entered with same town they live in, which happens when the same town is in the USA, they ALWAYS put the USA entry instead, I always Google the name or address to double check new information, it has now taken me over a year to get most of it correct
That came about by me contacting the person who owns the tree taking the time to check their answers if you get one, as so many start on the free one then dont carry on, resulting in confusion and more research to find out more, then that may not be accurate either

Good luck to all with your research
Darlene

Try googling Bavaria - you will get quite a bit to start with but be careful of Wikipedia. It can be useful for simple things but is to be taken with caution. However, they, as well as others, do sometimes give references to other publications. I am not surprised schools do not try to teach much about Europe, especially central Europe, it is far too complicated - but history as a whole is badly neglected. Pity. Best of luck.

Thanks. It gives me a place to start. While they teach some european history in school, there's a lot they don't teach. I'll have to look and see what english books i can find on bavarian history on Amazon or Barnes and Noble i can order,or get on an interlibrary loan, and read up on the period. Even a lot of the history of the United Kingdom, ie;Britian,Scotland, Wales and even Ireland isn't taught in schools.

Bavaria (Bayern) did not become a Kingdom until 1806 - so your ancestor could not have been a steward to the King of Bavaria in the 1690s. There were powerful Dukes and Electors for whom he may have worked but you will need to find out exactly who was in charge of which bit at that date as a starter - basically look up the history of Bavaria.

June 1867 she died in Farmington CT in 1907 She told her children that her Aunts or Aunt was a Lady in waiting to the Queen. I really have just about no info on her she is a huge Brick wall like she didn't mean to leave any info behind. Her Father was Thomas Markham and her Mother was Charlotte. Is there any way to find her and trace her story.
Candy

Not weird or unbelievable at all. Via simple mathematics, it is readily evident that a large fraction of all living persons with significant European descent are descended from Charlemagne (just as they would be for any other random person living in Europe ~40 generations ago who had lots of offspring).

Though I disagree with you about the likelihood, that doesn't mean I don't find it interesting....

That there is some elitism involved in who becomes president I have no doubt, but to pin this to a "sons of Charlemagne secret society" conspiracy theory is ludicrous, since easily hundreds of millions of people alive, including a significant fraction of all Americans, can claim the same "bloodline" (diluted to insignificance).

Hi
I have been asked by my mum to see if we can find out anything more about a crystal necklace she has just inherited.
We already know that my mum inherited it from her mother in law who inherited it from her mother in law - Ethel.
Ethel herself worked on the queens coronation dress as a dressmaker/seamstress.
When the dress was finished and the queen tried it on, she asked for a number of the crystals to be removed from the dress as it was too heavy, these crystals were shared out amoungst the workers who worked on the dress and were made into necklaces and bracelets. Which is what has just been passed down to my mum.
What with it being the queens diamond jubilee year we would just like to know a little about the necklace and whether any others survive.
I wasnt sure where to post this but am hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Ceri

I am working on if General Lew Wallace might be a relative of Chief Montezuma via Juan Velasques de Leon the chief guard to Chief Montezuma. Then the relationship of Juan de Leon and the de Leon family to Ceaser Borgia.

It seems there was more then a gold mask passed on to the Borgia family of Pope Alexander VI via the de Leon family.

Then a second line through Chief Powhatan and his daughter Pocahontas. Some English records suggest Chief Powhatan's mother was a descendent of Montezuma making King James Stuart a relative of Pocahontas through his grandmother.

Well that is if the blood line got into the Borgia Popes via the de Leon family 100 years before.

Not all of Moctezumas children were involved in the litigation in Spain. I'm trying to find concrete evidence of the marriage between Petronila Moctezuma and martin Navarro. It would be interesting to compare DNA from someone from this part of family to family in Spain. This litigation is mentioned in the book by Donald Chipman regarding children of aztec royalty.

There are a number of real historical references that that make this connection, so it is most likely pretty solid. I have been looking for documented descendants of the Sotelo de Moctezumas as this is one of the alleged ancestries of Petronila de Moctezuma.

There is a brief, tantalizing reference in the Codex Chimalpahin that suggests other Sotelo de Moctezuma descendants, but without naming any of them.

I have only recently seen a document in the Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara that actually names Petronila de Moctezuma and Martin Navarro. So I am pretty sure they did indeed exist. However, anything of their antecedents, at this point, is pure speculation as there seems to be no information. There is a cryptic reference is some of Jaime Holcomb's work, but I cannot locate it, and no one that I have corresponded with can produce it: so this is of little to no value.

The relevant historical texts do not mention them. They were apparently not involved in the extensive litigation of Moctezuma's descendents to get rights to the various encomiendas handed out by Cortez, or to get grants from the Spanish monarchy. There was too much money involved here not to have been involved, which suggests to me that Petronila de Moctezuma may not have been a descendant of Moctezuma.

Hi Patricia, I think we are indeed 4th cousins (based in France but heading home to NZ soon). I have some info and some interesting documents that came from my grandmother Vera Story (Robert's daughter). I did receive some info about Mary QoS on this thread but never managed to trace back. This said I did find a connection back to Edward IV (Robert's father's mother's father's father's father's father's father's father's father's father's father's sister was married to Edward IV in the late 1400s (he was the grandfather of Henry VIII)...this is known as the River's connection. I can share some of the doc's including Vera's memoires where she does mention Oswald briefly: After their daughter was born Florence Emily became very ill, and eventually died of cancer of the breast. Robert resigned his commission on account of his ill-health. For some time he rather drifted with nothing special to do. Then he had a chance to EO to New Zealand with his naval brother Oswald who was in command of H.M.S. Opal. Oswald married Miss Olave Baldwin, granddaughter of Hon. Andrew Buchanan, the Doctor who built Chingford of which now only the stone stables remain, and the grounds are a Public Park. Can you mail me at ferro_nicola@hotmail.com if you are interested. Regards Nicola

Hi - I'm a great granddaughter of William Oswald Story also of Bingfield - I think Robert was William Oswald's brother? If so that makes us fourth cousins! I am in Canada - are you in NZ or Australia?

I have done a lot of research on this family line and have not found any link to Mary Queen of Scots, unfortunately. I have, however, found direct links to other aristocratic families, including the Boleyns (Mary Boleyn - which could make us descendants of King Henry VIII - if you believe that he fathered Mary's children) as well as the Spencer family - Princes William and Harry are my 9th cousins (and likely yours too). I do have a direct link to the Stuart dynasty through the wife of William Oswald Story - Olave Janet Baldwin (Buchanan family of Dunedin/Christchurch area (Chingfield) NZ) who is 22 generations descended from the Stuarts.

Greetings, JohnnyPJ! It appears that you and my wife are distantly related as she descends from the Ruiz de Esparzas, Romo de Vivars and the Escaleras back to old Moctezuma himself. I have been given reason to believe that the Leonor de Moctezuma who married Cristobal de Valderrama may have been Moctezuma's daughter by another woman and thus half-sister to Isabel. Of course, Isabel de Moctezuma had a daughter named Leonor with Hernando Cortez which seems to cause some confusion. I wonder if you have proof of the connection of our Leonor as daughter to Princess Isabel?

I am deadended trying to locate real birth information for my husband's great-great grandfather, Alfred "Rayfield," b. 1863, supposedly to Thomas and Mary Ann [nee Smith] Rayfield of Clerkenwell. Family lore describes how a carriage bearing the crest of the Queen's Court would visit periodically and a veiled lady would bring toys for Alfred and payments for his support. Alfred is also described by the rest of the family as having been a "true gentleman" in demeanor all his life. I noticed that Alfred fits neatly into the biannual births of the seven Rayfield children, as number five. Perhaps his mother, Mary Ann Rayfield, was a wet nurse for someone, lost a child and became a convenient adoptive mother with few folks the wiser. How do I even begin to search for veracity? Or some alternative truth?

Careful research

I have only been on Ancestry.com for a short period but in that time I have noticed some erroneous data that is being perpetrated in many many family trees. If you have a York relation and it ends up with Richard Plantagenet or Richard of York King of England it cannot be right. Richard the III's only male child died as a child and Richard died without a male heir. His line died with him. The same is true for his brother Edward who was also King of England. Both his male heirs were supposedly killed by the aforementioned Richard after the death of Edward IV. And although they were considered of the House of York..York would not have been their surname. In order to have correct information, each person who adds someone to their tree from someone else's tree must make sure that entry is a correct entry. I have also seen entries where the parents listed are younger than the person that they are supposed to be the parents of...This too is an impossible feat. So check entries carefully and check the dates...if it can't be right don't add it and keep the errors going.

Hello, I suppose you know that de Guise is was the family name of Mary Queen of Scots' mother. Her family were all French and because of this she was considered as, and became the wife, at the age of 7, to the old King of France, Louis, I can't remember which one. After his death she returned to England and was married off to Robert Darnley and then married Bothwell, the rest, as they say is history. I hope this helps, not sure if it does. The name is definately French.

Re: Are there any records on "Equerry"

Just to add some general information to what Liz has already provided, an equerry “is essentially a military [appointment] which is invariably filled by a service or retired officer of the Armed Forces”. (Ronald Allison and Sarah Riddell, Royal Encyclopedia, London: Macmillan Press, 1991, p. 176.) For example, HM The Queen has two equerries – a senior/permanent one known as the Deputy Master of the Household and a junior one known as the Junior Equerry. The Junior Equerry, whose appointment lasts three years, wears his service uniform while on duty. He is in “close attendance upon Her Majesty at many of her public engagements”, whether outdoors (say, at a public function) or indoors (say, at an investiture). (RE, p. 176.) Unfortunately, the entry for ‘equerry’ in this publication does not seem to mention who is an assistant to an equerry or what his duties are.

If your individual in question died in 1948, then he was likely an equerry’s assistant during the reigns of King George V (1910-1936), King Edward VIII (1936), or King George VI (1936-1952). Take a look at thePeerage.com (at http://www.thepeerage.com/index_royal.htm) where you’ll find an “Index to the Royal Household”. This index lists various office holders, such as Equerries, Aides-de-Camp (whose functions are similar to Equerries), Private Secretaries, and more.

Hi,

I am not sure if you mean the UK Royal Family? (Sorry if I missed that point.) However - if you do - you can write to the Archivist at Windsor Castle.

They keep most of the records at Windsor Castle and the Archivist is very helpful. You do have to write an "old fashioned" letter though, and be patient for the reply!

Here is the address:
The Registrar
The Royal Archives
Round Tower
Windsor Castle
Windsor
Berkshire SL4 1NJ

Give them as much information as you can, dates etc and they will reply, albeit slowly - and in a very smart envelope!

Good luck,

Liz

PS Some Royal records are at Kew, but I had a similar question to yours and the answer was at Windsor so it's worth a try.

Thanks for your reply. I have been looking for this for some years now and have looked at many different types of record. With regard to the Census data, for the period 1841 and 1851 in the most likely area of London there are pages which are completely illegible and there are some schedules which are missing and have not been found by the new indexing that has been done recently. Just my luck! I was hoping there might be some family memories from branches that I have not reached. We should have spent more time with older relatives before they died. Thanks for your interest.
