Hi, There are Hassel's in Philadelphia as well. My family has always said our name was Von Hassel before they came to America.

From what I have researchd Hassel is not a common name.

Perhaps we all are related somehow! I knowmy great grandfather was Freidrich Von Hassel, though Freidrich is probably common..

Hello, has anyone come across the surname von Watzdorf? I have an ancestor, Johanne Dorothea Albertine Auguste von Watzdorf (1792-1827) in Altenburg, that I am trying to research. I have found some references to the history of the family, coat of arms, form castles, etc. but few details.

Many thanks,
Sean

Gustavo Buntinx,
Turns out, that after landing in NY 18 Dec 1928, von Hassel got on the Olympic and sailed for Southampton, arriving 30 Dec 1928. Record here at Ancestry.com

Also, the Library of Congress digitized newspaper site, Chronicling America, has a full-page New York Tribune article, "Adventures and Observations Among the Putumayos in the Rubber Lands, 15 September 1912, that quotes von Hassel & features a large portrait of "Dr. and Mrs. Von Hassel," here,
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030214/1912-09-15...

Finally, if you search NewspaperArchive.com you'll find couple early 1900s -- 1905 & 1907 -- investment ads for rubbe companies with which von Hassel was associated, and as well a search of books.google.com will turn up a number of histories of Amazonia in which he is mentoned.
I'm not sure what you mean by "major lexicon of the German nobility", but the von Hassel family is indeed listed in the Gotha (Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels), lastly in the Briefadel edition of 1984. The unrelated von Hassell family is also listed, lastly in the Briefadel edition of 1990.

His
family originated in the Rhineland/Pfalz area..so this could be a connection for you ..."

Eva Michels Linger's death notices were published in the local German papers. Possibly some children for that Linger family too. There are about 20 combined spellings of LENGER/LINGER in the growing collection: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).

I've responded elsewhere about the 60+ Michels and 75 Thelen surname entries (Georg Thelen in 1871, 1877 or 1881?)

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping to access our historic German-American culture.

I agree with the previous reply, and am adding additional information:

On the ship manifest for S.S. Essequibo, the ship that Georg Von Hassel arrived in New York on 12/18/28, there is a visa #69 issued on 12/1/28. The details associated with this record should provide more information than already discovered. Since it is more than 75 years ago, it appears to be available at the National Archives. These are located in The Records of the Foreign Service Posts of the Department of State under record groups 84.2 and 84.3. They are on microfilm. This may reveal which of the 12 places in germany named Hassel are related to his surname. Parish records that survived in Berlin may also be necessary. The surname Von Hassel does not appear in the major lexicon of german nobility. Jeff.

Gustavo,
If you search Ancestry.co US & Germany, you will find three records for Georg von Hassel, two 1912 Hamburg/NY passenger lists (same voyage, one is a German record & the other a US), and one 1928 Callao/NY list.

Von Hassel's birth date is estimated at 1869/70.
Dan

Back in 1993 I published in SOUTH AMERICAN EXPLORER an article, "Fights of Machu Picchu," in which Jorge von Hassel has a prominent role. The article is online, here,
http://lastdaysoftheincas.com/wordpress/englishman-and-germa...

I may have other info on him; would require looking in my files.

I am an art historian based in Lima, Peru. I am currently involved in protracted academic research on Juan Manuel Figueroa Aznar, an important photographer and painter active in Cuzco and Paucartambo during the first half of the twentieth century. I have reason to believe that at some time he became associated with the German explorer and geologist George M. Von Hassel (a.k.a. Jorge M Von Hassel), who performed very important services in the pioneer surveying of the Amazonian frontier lands.

Unfortunately, there seems to be very little documentation available on Georg Von Hassel, other than his own fascinating chronicles of the explorations he undertook under commission of the Peruvian government. We even lack the dates of his birth and his death.

Georg Von Hassel (or his wife, or his daughter) might have resided in the United States. Certain references in the Library of Congress database identify him with Fides Von Hassel. A person with that same name, but with an additional “l”, seems to be buried in the Fort Lincoln cemetery, at Brentwood, Prince George's County, in Maryland, according to the information published by www.findagrave.com.

This was posted by Thomas Reachmack, whom I have been unable to contact. His entry further refers that “Mrs. Von Hassell was a dear friend of the John Reachmack family of Wahshington, D.C. She was a Peruvian and her husband was born in Germany and was a geologist”.

Any information regarding this matter would be most appreciated and duly acknowledged.

She was a Peruvian and her husband was born in Germany and was a geologist”.

Any information regarding this matter would be most appreciated and duly acknowledged.
Google Bks. has [had?] a directory of Austrian nobility. I can't locate it quickly; but, you might try to find that.

There seem to be numerous references to persons named Zänglein, on the web, but I cannot find any to "von Zänglein" or "v. Zänglein."

I very much doubt stories of titles being sold, or otherwise used as property.
Hi Viv,
I noticed that this thread was back in 2006 but I'm wondering if you had any further information on the Zanglein's in Europe? My connection is Paulus Zanglein 1812-1878 came to Tasmania with his family - on entry to Australia the name was changed to Singline. We have been able to trace back as far as George Michael Zanglein b 1761 Heidelberg d 1842
Hoping that you can help!
Thanks
Mat

Very intriguing story, indeed. Younger sons of important noble houses coming to America are not at all unknown. I believe there was a Hohenzollern that did so.

If your ancestor were truly in a "royal" house, your search is limited. [Of course, Baden, while sovereign, was only made "royal" rather recently.] I just briefly scanned through the house of Baden entries in the online Gotha, looking for brothers born around the time you suggest. No luck. It occurs to me that "Albert" and "Joseph" may have been "Rufnamen" and not the first in the sometimes agonizingly long lists of given names, especially in royal families.

Were your ancestors from non-royal, but families of the highest nobility, your search becomes instantly more elaborate. I would focus first, of course, on such families seated in Baden. But, I'm not sure any list of "Fürstlich," say, families would readily give you their home territories. It could turn out to be quite a job, unless you are familiar with the materials and history.

Have you looked for newspaper accounts of the weddings in Holly Springs? I wonder if there were some enterprise that brought Germans to that town ... some connection. In that regard, I am thinking of my great grandfather, who found a position with the zinc rolling mills, in La Salle, Illinois, that were owned and operated by German immigrants. Another great grandfather, early upon arrival, here, worked on the Eads Bridge, St. Louis. For some reason, I believe that project's engineering was in charge of a German; and, likely, word got back to the technical high school, where my grt. grdfthr was studying.

Best of luck with your searches. I hope that if you, or anyone else, finds anything on this, that the results will find their way onto this list. Thank you.
Hello, I am looking for information on german royalty in the mid 19th century. Below I will tell what info i have gathered on my gg grandfather and hope someone might point me in the right direction.

-I have an ancestor , Albert Herr, that has multiple stories of him being part of a royal family. The story is he was way down the line, 7th or 8th and he left Germany around 1870 for America and changed his last name. He had a brother Joeseph that came as well and they married sisters in Holly Springs MS shortly after immigrating. Rumored to be a arranged marriage in my family.

-On a passport application he states he was born in Elzach, Germany, baden. This re-eforces a story of him going back to germany later in life that I have been told. The family story continues that he came back to america when the Nazi's where coming to power.

-When back in the us there is another story, from the county he live in ms, that tells of him having his nurse/servant burn his royal papers on his death bed and the reasoning for him burning them i have heard multiple stories.

This is only a few things that point to the possibilty through stories and some documents i have been told or found. Does Anyone know of an Albert born in 1849(though his passport application says 1848 which we believe is false becasue even his tombstone says 1849.) that left germany as a prince, Having a brother named Joseph?

I am looking for any members of my family and ancestors of Wulff that is from royalty/ nobility along with the Klindtworth from Germany. We have limited information on our ancestors. Heinrich "henry" Klindtworth and his older brother Joseph came from Buxtehude, Germany in 1874. Joseph was killed later in the 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco. At this time we are looking for a wife that he may have had, and any children. Heinrich married a Caroline "Lena" Hoff who was from Germany. They had a son and many other children as well, but Joseph married Erica Wulff. Many of our members have lived in Ca, ND, SD, Minn, Germany, Conn, OR, Mass, and Tx, and all over the place:) I do know what Fredrick Wulff is my ggggfather and he was an officer in the German Army in the mid 1800s, He was married unknown to us who she is. They raised the family in Schleswig Province, Preussen Germany. Fredrick was a diplomat from Germany to Denmark. He had a son named Ludwig Wulff. We have no info on him or his wife: Antonette S. they met at a party in Denmark. She was the daughter of a diplomat from Spain and she was polish and Spanish, they married in 1886. I do know they had children as well, one girl was Erica Wulff. We have no info. on her either. I am hoping i may be able to find any information on any of our ancestors. I would appreciate any info you may have or think u have... If possible and u think their may be a connection please email or mess me. We still have family in Germany. Their is also family with the names: Blair, all of the above mentiond, Simundson, Nygard, Smith, Barta, Emerson, Johnson, Schoenhit, Bryon, Bondel, Vervell, Thompson, Werven, Hartman just to name a few. I know we still have tons of family in Germany, Sweden, and Denmark and it would be wonderful to be able to share with my children the joys of having a wonderful family tree :) I appreciate your time & Happy Holidays to all!!!!!Cathy Klindt-Cobb

It sounds like my Great-Grandfather's chronology comes after the dates you mention--he was born in 1872 in Galicia, which is after the men you are tracing emigrated to America. It sounds like there's no cross-over. He married a woman from the lower nobility in Posen--Emma Meta von Etter, and they emigrated to America in 1906 with two young children. (Another was born on the boat.)

Hi
Frederick Riemer, born 1847 left Germany about 1869 with two brothers,to avoid service in the military.
After he got settled in America he sent for his mother and girlfriend, Frances Augusta Wendorf, they arrived in 1870.
Frederick's father was Johann, and he died in 1869 and we have found his death record in Germany and I believe it said he was a blacksmith.
We have done a DNA test on the Riemer Paternal line to see if we match a family who's last name is Rimer. Our Haplogroup is R1b.
I happened upon your note and was struck by some parallels. My great grandfather was also a blacksmith who worked for the Kaiser in his younger years (app 1890 - 1900--those are extremely approximate dates). His name, as far as I have been able to deduce, was Johann Rudolph Zimmermann, and he lived in the Posen area of Poland for much of his life. Before emigrating to America he also traveled around Germany selling de Laval cream separators. I would love to learn more of your side of things, and discover if possibly the two men's lives intersected.

Neither does a search on their index of the entire range of the gothäische genealogische Taschenbücher.

While the absence of the name in these lists is not dispositive, I would begin to suspect the family legend.

Happy searching.

Dear List contributor.

A surname of Wilhelm/~i does not, I think, increase the liklihood of having some connection to the Hohenzollerns. This is getting to be a long-ish thread; but, I still recommend that you read through the responses to other queries similar to yours. The late Kaiser's ancestry and descent are well known and available on the web. Entries on this thread give some good website references for you to search.

If the connection were through someone with a surname other than Wilhelmi, you would have to do some work before anyone, here, could help you.

As always, check with relatives first to get what details on the case are to be had from your end.

I would also be interested in finding out if my branch of the family is related to the Kaiser. My dad's name is Gordon Wilhelmi. He Grew Up in Wisconsin. His dad's name was Ralph. I believe he also grew up in Wi. He was born in 1909ish.

Thanks again. I did have that information as well. Wikipedia is great, but I always double check the sourcing on that.
According to: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Bidembach this is implied, though there her last name is spelled as Wirtemberger. That page also lists a couple of online resources which may be of help to you.
