I was wondering if anyone has come across any von Hassel's. I have been trying to research this family for a number of years and keep running into dead ends. The problem lies that my Grandfather passed away a few weeks before my Dad was born and for some reason they did not stay in touch with the von Hassel side of the family. I have just ordered a bunch of microfilm from LDS for our area in Northern Germany.

Along the lines of what I replied to the query "John Parish (1742-1829) von Senftenberg", the untitled noble family von Hassel is found in the German-language series of books known as *Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels*, specifically Band (Volume) 99 of the Adelige B series XIX 1990. I don't know if your particular von Hassel family members will be found in this book, but it's something you might want to consider. If you don't have access to the GHdA (they are often found in larger public libraries or in university libraries), and if you don't get a specific answer from someone else in this message board, you might want to consider posting your query in the Usenet newsgroup <soc.genealogy.german>. I was told by my parents that once the von Hassels immigrated to the United States they dropped the "von". My father, Edward Hassel, grew up in Astoria,NY. I believe his mother & father were born and raised in NY also.

I heard the same thing about dropping the von when they immigrated. My parents were the first over from their immediate family so it's a little hard for me to trace them since almost everyone is in Germany. I have found a few more von Hassel's and checking to see if they are related somehow.

Just saw your posting and thought maybe we might have something in commom.
My great grandmother was Catherine (maybe K) von Hassel. She was born in Germany in June 1844 and died December 1900. She came to the U.S. and in 1873 married August Mueller also from Germany.
They had one daughter, Anna Dorothea born 1875. As far as I know, they lived in New Jersey.
If any of this applies, please contact me.

Diane

Hello! I am also a von Hassel from the NY area. My father is Ernst, his parents were Johanne Heinrich von Hassel and Anna Schutt. My great grandmother was Marie Schutt.
My fathers sister Kathe, married Hans Ahrens. They have two children, Wolfgang and Susanne Ahrens.
My fathers uncles on his fathers side were named Willie von Hassel, Walter von Hassel and I believe there is also a Peter von Hassel who resides in Hamburg.
