I live in Western Oregon and my Uncle has done extensive research on the Papen family, Franz Von Papen is on the family tree. We have the family name back to the 1600's.

I have a Clemens August Theodor Hubert von Papen zu Werl born 26 April 1837 - Werl, died 1890 - Königsborn bei Hamm, married toElisabeth Antonia Katharina Brabender June 1882. He was stated to be a cavalry officer. His parents were stated to be Philipp Freiherr von Papen zu Werl and Clementine von der Wenge. Clemens August had a sister, Clara. I do not have the full name of Philipp. Also, I would appreciate knowing where he ties into the von Papen family tree relative to Franz von Papen, the Chancellor.
Thank you.

Hi! My father told me his cousin was Franz Von Papen and that when his grandfather came to the US in 1850, he dropped the "von". I haven't been able to find any information further back than my great-great grandfather, Dietrich Theodore Pape. Supposedly, he came from Westphalia with his brother (my gggrandfather was only 13). I can't find any emigration records and don't know who his brother was. It's very frustrating. What the von Papen connection is, I'm not sure. I do know that he was from Westphalia and so were the von Papen family...from Werl, According to Franz von Papen's book, he traced the family history back to the 1100's, to Albert Pape. The were a Catholic family and had some special job in the Church (which might be the source of the name, which means "priest" or "pope".) Anyway, the family had rights to the salt mines in Werl. I'd be happy to post info about that if you're interested. It is really fascinating. The family has been in that town since 1100! The title "Erbsälzer" applied to the families (of which only 2 remained in recent history) who had the rights to the salt mines. It was a title of nobility of sorts as they were the town patricians.

By the way, where are you from?

My email address is katpape@gmail.com. I hope you read my post in response to the message on the message board. I'd love to discuss family history. I've got some big gaps in the von Papen history...like 200 years!

Hello! Do you have the parents and grandparents of Franz Von Papen?
My Von Papen said he was a cousin, but I don't know how they connect. His name was Theodore Dietrich Von Papen (lived in America and changed it to "Pape"), and his father was Dietrich Theordore Von Papen, born in 1837 in Werl, Westphalia (wife Mary Stehle)
