Inter-class marriage/relationships

Am wondering if any one can help me: I have recently traced a particular branch back in my tree, which stems from knights at one end, to fisherfolk/agricultural folk at the modern end. The problem I have is that all the data seems correct, however I am un certain as to how it could have ended up 'dropping' through the classes over time? At some point, I guess somebody must have either married 'beneath' themselves or squandered a fortune, or some such like. My question is, is this possible over time and is it plausible to be descended from knights and working class ancestors in a single family line? Any help on this would be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris
